To be fuming that my car has been vandalised and my insurance will penalise ME for it

Some youths damaged my car by standing on the bonnet and kicking the door. We don't know who they are and it all happened very quickly - car was parked outside the house and DH saw it happen from the upstairs window. It is dented pretty bad.

I am absolutely fuming that this will be treated as 'at fault' by my insurance company as there is no-one for them to claim against. I will have to pay the excess and my premiums will go up. Only had 3 years no claims but still.....

Aibu to think that car insurance should cover you for vandalism. I have checked the policy and it doesn't say anything at all about what happens if there is no one to claim from

Oh and the difference in my insurance quotes between fault and non-fault? £5.

TwoOddSocks · 31/01/2015 11:54

I think you just need to remember that their policy has no intention of being fair. An actuary has sat down and worked out what will make them the most money (there's presumably a tension between pissing off their customers like they've pissed you off, discouraging people from claiming whether they are at fault of not, and justifying raising costs). I agree it sucks.

it is called 'no claims bonus not 'no blame bonus'

DP old car's tyres were £250 each mine are about £35.

YANBU OP though.

It's one thing in life that's pees me off. People damaging or taking things that don't belong to them and then the other person having to suffer.

Don't forget to shop around at renewal time. You will almost certainly get a better price from another company. And if you want to stay with your current insurer you can then use the quotes from other companies to beat them down. You do not get the best deal if you simply renew with the same insurer.

YANBU at all, OP. Just because that's how it is doesn't mean it's fair or that we should be happy about it.

Agree with others that you get what you pay for with insurance, though. In my first seven years of driving I went with the cheapest quote each time. In the seventh year I was involved in an accident - entirely the other driver's fault - but I realised how shockingly bad my insurers were. Luckily the other driver's insurance accepted right away that he was at fault and organised me a courtesy car. If I'd been relying on my insurance I would have been stranded with no way to get to work until they pulled their elbows our of their arses.
