"so you didn't go to work today then?"

Is what I have heard from two people so far today and is what I hear regularly from people every time I work in my office in my home....

It's making me feel cross now. I run a business, I'm either at the workshop, on site or working in my office. I often work until late at night, if not through the night.
WHY is it assumed that I am not working if I'm in my office which just happens to be in my home??

Grr. So, AIBU to start coming up with suitably daft replies?

I work from home a lot, especially when my manager is away.

I will be working from home for the next few weeks, so people making such assumptions would piss me off. I do as much from home as I do when you have to go to the office, and the majority of it is done online.

Try being a childminder. I swear the next person who suggests I just do a bit of babysitting will be beaten to death with a frozen doll.

Today I had another parent who I helped out on a snow day explain because my commute is walking downstairs to the kitchen I don't understand the pressure if a real job.

I work from home as a permanent arrangement and I put in way more hours than I would do from an office. It does offer a degree of flexibility though, but then my team is currently in 8 different countries, including the US so I often have meetings at odd times. I do prep the evening meal at lunchtime, put the washing on, go for a run etc, but am always available during core hours.

I find it harder to start working from home than in the office, but once my computer is remotely connected I get far more done as I am not interrupted or expected to join in the office banter. I stop for regular breaks and in this time I might make a cup of tea, answer the door to a postman, put a load of washing on or eat something. But I still work more than my contracted hours achieve everything I need to and usually more. I also do school run if any of my DC ask. But I discourage visitors and certainly wouldn't go out for lunch.
Unfortunately I'm in a relatively new job and my predecessor took liberties working from home 1 day a week, so they won't offer it to me at the moment.

I often wfh and end up taking parcels in for the whole street, then have to take them around when they don't come to collect it

It's funny because like others have said you can get way more done at home without constant chatter and interruptions! I'd work from home more often if we didn't live in a really old and freezing house and I wouldn't need to have the heating on all day...

Ceasre · 30/01/2015 20:02

My lovely DCousin always calls my regular day wfh my 'day off'. Good job I love her.

WiiUnfit · 30/01/2015 20:04

YANBU, next time tell them you were busy conducting a Very Important Experiment into which way a cat with a buttered slice of toast strapped to it's back lands.

I had DS's pre-school staff mention parents who shock horror dare to take their DCs to nursery even when they've got a day off. DH & I have done this many times over the years, we often end up having simultaneous days off with little notice (or at least not the 4 weeks notice DS's nursery demands) so choose to take full advantage by having a rare day on our own Grin

I have worked from home for sixteen years and no-one has ever said this or implied that working from home is not work. I know many, many people - in fact most of the people I do know - who work from home and I have never comer across this attitude. (Not saying it isn't true OP - I just haven't seen it)

ColdFeetWarmHeart · 30/01/2015 20:39

I'm very interested as to what jobs all you guys do from home - especially the employed vs the self employed!! I work for a large company and wfh is unheard of

BallsforEarrings · 30/01/2015 21:10

Since i stopped working 'out in the field' with my staff I still put in 12 hour days and am still behind on my work as yet but my staff now refer to my 'days off' they all go home by 4pm and forget about the lot!

Ah well why care it is what it is!
