Screen time

1 minute reading = 1 minute screen time. AIBU? My son is a very good reader and enjoys it but since he got an iPad at Christmas his reading has taken the hit. Is that reasonable until the novelty of the iPad wears off and won't want to be glued to it 24/7?

How old is he?

I wouldn't at any age tbh. Because the I pad is so desirable, you'll subconsciously give him the impression that the reading is the 'penance' iyswim?

Contraryish · 29/01/2015 14:55

No, not reasonable. Just limit iPad use and let him read as much as he likes! Agree that rewarding reading makes the reading seam like a chore, not the pleasure it should be!

Or get a Kindle App on the iPad! Wink

I've been doing it and had no bother so far. Check what time he starts at and at the end round it up to the nearest five minutes. No bother. One of the other mum's at son's school does similar, five minutes reading = 10 minutes screen time, am I being a bit tight?

Depends how old he is?

Generally with mine when pre teen it would be devises off at a certain time and then books for then on or other creative stuff or board games.

He's eight. Loves reading but I think the novelty of having his own iPad is just too much at the moment!

Why not both? He can play his game, but as 'homework' or literacy time, must write a story that includes the characters and the plot of the game.
Or google some text based adventure games so he's playing and reading at the same time.
Or download Twine so he can create his own text adventure games.

Different times of day different activities. My DS is 9. He would play on Roblox/Minecraft/Play Station all day if he could. He does homework/reading aloud to me when he gets in from school, then plays on computers till supper, then watches TV, then reads till bedtime and in bed. I'd like less computer time, but feel I have to be realistic and this way I don't think there's a connection between 20 mins computer, 20 mins reading etc as he does them at different times.
