Cat food saucers in the dishwasher - minging or fine?

UsedtobeFeckless · 29/01/2015 10:41

Row raging at work over whether putting the saucers you've been feeding the cat from in the dishwasher at 60 degrees is a no brainer or imperilling your family with horrible cat-borne lurgies ... What do you lot think, please?

It never ceases to amaze me to discover, yet again, people who do not believe in the power od soap and hot water. Not only will the dishwasher do the job, but fairy liquid and a sink if hot water would too!

RaspberryRuffle · 29/01/2015 14:25

No matter about the logic it would make me boke squeamish.
There was a thread recently about not eating certain foods if you had been ill last time you had them, not necessarily logical but understandable. I view this the same way.

DeanKoontz · 29/01/2015 14:26

we don't have a cat any more. But we do still have the bowls. One of them is a lovely shape and size for a side dish. Mason Cash, no less.

I have taken to using if for Garlic Bread etc.

Hatespiders · 29/01/2015 14:28

I must remember to tell our three very sternly, "Hey you lot! During the night, don't walk on the counter tops. Don't wee up the cupboards. Don't lick any plates. And don't be sick."
I'm sure they'll do exactly as I say. Grin

Bettybody one of the great pleasures of life is to snuggle with a cat in bed.

not the labrador too big

FoxyMcFox · 29/01/2015 14:31

I have to make sure our shower cubicle has sufficient puddles of water in it after we use it for the cat to drink from. She won't drink from a bowl. I'm sure she'd pay great attention if I told her not to walk on the worktops Hmm

Hygellig · 29/01/2015 14:35

I think it's fine. They're very hot. We wash the cat bowls in the dishwasher.

Momagain1 · 29/01/2015 14:38

As long as I have had cats, I have washed the worktops first thing in the morning/before cooking. They dont get on them when I am around, but I am sure they waltz all over them when I am not in sight.

Until now! This flat has a door to the dining room, and the kitchen is beyond that. Door is shut at night/when I leave the house. And there arent cozy spots other than the dining chairs in there, so they tend to not even want to go in there unless we are eating and might drop something. Every other room, even the lobby, has superiour napping facilities.

I don't own a dishwasher ... The cats bowls go in the washing up bowl after I've washed everything else and are washed with a different sponge. Same cats sleep in our beds, DD often eats dinner with a cat on her lap and I don't always wash my hands between picking up a cat and eating a sandwich or similar. DS is often to be found licking the cat and once when he was smaller (he's nearly 2 now) he was found rummaging through the cat litter while DD watched egging him on and giggling. We are all still alive, soap and hot water kills germs, as does my steam cleaner, but I agree with Hate a certain amount of exposure to nasties is important for ones immune system.

TreadSoftlyOnMyDreams · 29/01/2015 14:56

Bin lid Any other PITA household things to be cleaned that people regularly put in the dishwasher? I do draw the line at a toilet brush though. They are pretty disgusting things.

FreudiansSlipper · 29/01/2015 14:58

minging

according to my fluffy pussycat soldier

he is glad that I follow his instruction of clearing his dish out with tissue, spraying with cleaning anti bacterial spray leaving for a minute or two then once again another clean over with clean tissue followed by a rinse

according to him using a sponge would be mining too as it has our slobber and germs on

TheCunnyFunt · 29/01/2015 15:14

I put the dogs bowls in the DW during the day when DP is at work. He is of the 'urgh!' Brigade, when I ask why, he says 'Because it is.' Hmm

I still remember a dishwasher thread from the past, IIRC the OP was asking if she was UR to put the bin lid in the DW, one MNer said she puts dog shit caked wellies in her DW Shock

TheCunnyFunt · 29/01/2015 15:18

Found it!

KnittedJimmyChoos · 29/01/2015 15:26

no i would never do this.

Hassled · 29/01/2015 15:34

I wash the cat bowls in the dishwasher regularly. We're all still here to tell the tale.

pingpongmerrilyonhigh · 29/01/2015 16:46

I put the pets stuff in the dishwasher IF it's going on the highest temperature.
Otherwise their dishes are washed by hand seperate from ours. I wouldn't use an antibacterial spray on pets dishes as some of them, and disinfectants for washing floors etc, can be toxic to pets.

Germgirl · 30/01/2015 13:03

PicklePig has a set of lovely spotty Mason Cash bowls, 4 black spotty ones & 4 red spotty ones, I always wash them in the dishwasher with our stuff.
They are a perfect size for serving olives etc, and have been used to do so. My sil was horrified when she realised. But they're just china bowls! They've been washed!!

CatsClaus · 30/01/2015 13:11

I do, and I share water with the cat, one of them drinks my coffee too

dh is always saying, "oh were you not finished with that" as i chug down the dregs "the cat was drinking it"

All you folks handwashing the catplates...what do you think happens to the cat germs at hand wash temperature?
Catgerms all over your cloths, scrubbies and sinks...all over ALL THE THINGS! Doing catgermy things.

splodgeses · 30/01/2015 13:17

I put my dogs' bowls, dds potty, the toilet seat, radiator sludge filled tupperware, my kitchen bin, dirty rugby kit and lawnmower parts in my dishwasher. I don't but that is a list of accepted things in dishwashers on a thread a couple of days ago

Honestly, it is fine to put most things in a dishwasher. The idea being it cleans the stuff that goes in.

blacktreaclecat · 30/01/2015 13:25

I do this, although our cats only have dry food. I would do it if they had wet as well though.

OTheHugeManatee · 30/01/2015 13:32

It's fine.

But our cats run the house.

findingherfeet · 30/01/2015 13:38

All I can think of is the person who posted about washing a potty in their dishwasher...I haven't recovered from that. Cat food sounds fine in comparison (unless cat lick is really unhygienic?)

notnaice · 30/01/2015 13:43

It would be fine.

UsedtobeFeckless · 30/01/2015 14:28

What actually are you likely to catch from them, though? And wouldn't you be more likely to catch whatever it was if you hand washed them ...

My first reaction when I found out what DP was doing was Eeeargh and I'm trying to figure out why!
