Nappy cakes? Really?

First post in AIBU. Just for the record.

So a colleague will be going on maternity leave imminently. Another colleague is insisting that we get pregnant colleague a nappy cake (with the money from the collection). I loathe and detest them. They look hideous. I would prefer to spend the money on clothes/small toys for the baby. I cannot see the appeal of a nappy cake. However I know this may not be what Mum to be wants (I don't know her opinion of nappy cakes). AIBU?

Well why don't you do that?

I've made loads for people but tailored with stuff I know they'll use and like and I've known they've liked them because they ask me to knock one up for people they want to give one too with the innards they want to put in.

It's no big deal.. just buy the insides that you'll know the new mum will like.

I was really glad I got one of these from work in the end. DH had bought 'newborn' nappies on Amazon and not realised they came in different sizes. We took the ones from the nappy cake to the hospital rather than open the packs he'd bought which we later discovered we're size 2 and would have been far too big for brand new ds! We'd have had no nappies otherwise!

Other than that we used the muslins, mittens, hat , blanket in ours and DS still likes the soft toy. I thought it was a nice gift.

SnowWhiteAteTheApple · 28/01/2015 20:05

Much better than flowers, at least the nappies will be used and they are usually full of small toys, bibs etc. Flowers are gone after a week or so whereas this type of gift lasts longer.

Lorelei353 · 28/01/2015 20:08

To be fair I also got flowers and actual cake. A Large, stork-shaped, buttercream covered, chocolate cake. It was gorgeous.

Stupid present

RedCrayons · 28/01/2015 20:08

I was very disappointed that a nappy cake contains no actual cake.

I got £200 in Motgercare vouchers. I genuinely thought that it was a waste if money because I'd never spend that much on baby stuff!

Crumblevision · 28/01/2015 20:15

Yes Crum, that would be preferable Grin

cogitosum · 28/01/2015 20:21

I cried when ds was 3 days old and flowers arrived. Putting them in a vase just seemed so much work!

NoArmaniNoPunani · 28/01/2015 20:23

I like them, but then I really want a vagina cake at my baby shower.

jonrotten · 28/01/2015 20:24

Dh got one from work when dd was born.

It was actually great - loads of baby grows and vests in different sizes, from birth up to 18 months.

A selection of size 1-5 nappies too. I quite liked it, although Christ, it was pink. It almost blinded me!
