To ask what your maternity package was/is?

I work for a fairly large firm (250+ people) and it's very 'male' heavy with a lot of engineers. One of the directives for this year is for the company to employee more women in engineering roles.

This is great, but it bothers me that the maternity package is shite (6 weeks at 90% then straight onto SMP). We have a forum where we can ask questions anonymously, but as we're so short of women (especially ones of child bearing age) it might be obvious that this question has come from me or someone in my (female heavy) dept.

So can I ask what your package was/is? And whether I should raise this as a concern for a company actively trying to recruit young (graduate) female engineers?

Private school, 6 weeks full pay, 3 months half pay then SMP.

longestlurkerever · 30/01/2015 14:45

I work in the civil service and get 6 months on full pay then 3 months on smp. I now know this is very generous but it's the same as my last workplace which was a badass city law firm so I used to think it was fairly common. Some Government departments give 9 months' full pay, which once you've added annual leave means you can take almost a year on full pay.

Oh and I just got an email saying they have brought in a new shared parental leave policy which means dh could take some of my fully paid mat leave. Luckily for me he doesn't really want to!

I'm in a big civil engineering firm, here it's 12 weeks full pay, 26 weeks SMP. No idea how this compare.

Writerwannabe83 · 30/01/2015 15:02

I had 8 weeks at full pay.
Then 18 weeks of half pay and SMP on top.
Then 11 weeks of just SMP.

Italian wins! What sort of workplace is that, Italian?

ItalianWiking84 · 30/01/2015 22:53

Sorry should have said that I live in Denmark and this is by law what you are entitled to... I work in Finance so got 6 weeks exstra that I can use over the next 6 years and 5 extra holiday days per year, but that's what the union has negotiated for us

trixymalixy · 30/01/2015 23:01

Working for what was at the time one of the large UK banks I got statutory. Fucking shite.

Maternity pay was not one of the criteria I considered when apting for jobs clearly.

Meplusyouequals4 · 30/01/2015 23:01

I get 6 months 90% pay, 3 months 50% pay and 3 months SMP. but after first month back full time I get half my annual salary as a bonus.

HedgehogsDontBite · 30/01/2015 23:05

I'm in Sweden. We got 480 days to split between us however we liked at 100% of pay for DH and £25 per day for me as I don't work. DH took 6 weeks off, then worked 3 days a week for 6 months, then 4 days for 6 months and I claimed the rest.

I'm really shocked at how little you all get in the UK.

EdithDickie · 31/01/2015 05:32

Lawyer here, smp only

claracluck1978 · 31/01/2015 06:05

I work in a teeny company of 4 people. I got 6 weeks 90% and then Smp + £300 per month for the rest. I did use my keeping in touch days to do one day a month to tie in with my key skill that no one else has though. That was why I got the £300 on top per month. Now I'm back I get a lot less than £300 a day!!!

SwedeDreams · 31/01/2015 06:09

Six months at full pay, six months at 50%. This is public sector, and one of the reasons I chose to move into it.

YonicScrewdriver · 31/01/2015 06:44

OP, don't forget it's currently unclear what will happen post April with enhanced packages and shared parental leave.

BackToTheFuschia · 31/01/2015 06:52

Huge global accountant.
Was SMP.
Now I'm finished mat leave: 18wks full pay, 8 weeks half pay & remainder at SMP.

Notanexcitingname · 31/01/2015 08:00

Large multinational. Science based. 6 months full pay, then smp. Though I actually took maternity leave when it was 6 ordinary plus 6 additional, so went back at 6 months.

Jackieharris · 31/01/2015 08:17

I used to work at a national charity that gave full pay for 3 months half pay for 3 months, but they have changed their contracts now and might not be as generous anymore.

I knew a woman who worked for a company built up by a guy who became a multi millionaire. She had worked their for 20 years before taking mat leave and only got the statutory amount. I don't think that should be allowed! Surely after 20 years of service a multi millionaire could do the decent thing and give a proper maternity package.

Imo the statutory amount should be increased for big companies.

BlueberryWafer · 31/01/2015 08:38

I work for a large company. Their maternity package is 3 weeks at 90% then the rest SMP. However I was off sick with hyperemesis in the qualifying weeks so my maternity package is sweet FA. (I can get maternity allowance though).
