AIBU to ask any dentists - about codliver oil

This sounds like a lot of woo, but have heard/read that taking codliver oil can help actually fix dental cavities. Can't see how this can be right, but was wondering if any truth, and if so, how the science would work? Oil and enamel?? thanks :)

It contains vitamin d doesn't it? Maybe it's something to do with that as vitamin d is essential for bones/ teeth.

Noodledoodledoo · 28/01/2015 13:16

Vitamin D assits the body in asorbing calcium - I know there is no point taking calcium supplements without Vit D. As to the teeth I don't know.

NorahBone · 28/01/2015 13:16

I should add that I am not, in any way, a dentist... just bumping until the dentists get home from work!

5Foot5 · 28/01/2015 13:19

I am not a dentist but I am old enough to have been made to take cod liver oil every morning by my Mum because it was "good for me".

It is DISGUSTING. You don't want to go there - trust me!

Noodledoodledoo · 28/01/2015 13:24

Absorbing - excuse the typo!

onedirectionparent · 28/01/2015 14:00

5Foot5 - me too - in orange juice! The oily rings gave it away - bleurgh
But would be worth it if it could fill a cavity!

This multiplied by a thousand - codliver oil capsules - as a child I used to put one in my mouth - heave - take out of mouth - repeat endlessly until my parents gave up trying.

blacktreaclecat · 28/01/2015 14:55

It's woo. No evidence at all.

bonzo77 · 28/01/2015 16:59

Dentist. Are you talking about oil pulling?

ItsAllGoingToBeFine · 28/01/2015 17:01

I believe that vitamin d/calcium/vitk2 may help with bone/teeth density/quality but I dont think cavities can heal themselves?

Hatespiders · 28/01/2015 17:49

Oh I absolutely adored my daily cod liver oil as a child. I used to beg for a second spoonful. And I still take it today. I must be really weird!

Sorry op, haven't heard of Vit D doing this, but will be interested to see what The Dentists say later.

onedirectionparent · 28/01/2015 19:52

hi Bonzo77, no I don't think it's oil pulling, seems to be actually taking it.
Really don't believe it but wondered if there was anything - this was the amazon link (is that allowed - sorry if not) but if you google it you get other people saying stuff.

I had a small cavity and sensitive teeth which disappeared and got better when I took cod liver oil and upped my calcium.

I wouldn't try it for a big cavity or something which hurt though

Dexterjamesmummy · 28/01/2015 23:05

Hatespiders you're not on your own, I still bite the capsules, love the stuff!

bonzo77 · 29/01/2015 17:24

Nope. Nothing you take internally can affect fully formed enamel.

bonzo77 · 29/01/2015 17:28

It's like saying taking, oh I don't know.... Vitamin c helps to heal an old unsightly scar. I though fish oil contained omega 3 & 6, good for nerve health or something. Vitamin D is a different supplement. At least I hope so as I'm taking both.
