I mean presumably the man isn't against everything that's not in the bible....
I know it must be something that he holds dear and it's changing but heckling in York Minister...? Seems a cheap shot for media attention.

I think that history has shown that suppressing belief has not gone well for the church and that more good has come of letting people have their freedom of speech. But.... I absolutely disagree with what he said and how he said it and instead of gaining sympathy over being censored this guy has been widely considered to be an eejit by public opinion. So, letting him say such ridiculous things has actually helped the church. In conclusion... He's being unreasonable, the church dealt with it well.

Idontseeanysontarans · 26/01/2015 18:14

I assumed it was the ordination version of the 'just cause or impediment' bit in the marriage service - could he have actually put a stop or a break to it if the Archbishop hadn't had all the legal arguments behind him or is it more of a courtesy/traditional part of the service?

TallGiraffes · 26/01/2015 18:36

YWNBU to heckle at next week's consecration Wink But then I suspect there will be a significantly fewer cries of "yes" to the question of is it your will than there were today!

And Libby, in case you're a MNer, 2 things - congratulations and good luck! And if you really want to start your bishophood with a bang then you could lay hands on Philip North next week. That would make the vast majority of the diocese of Blackburn very happy!!

Theboodythatrocked · 26/01/2015 19:26

But I can't understand how he can spend so much of his time protesting about this issue? Surely he has duties to do? What about his congregation that supports women bishops? It's disgraceful that he keeps being paid by the church and acts like this,

I am in No way religious but I really admire Libby. Her faith and conduct are fantastic and I admire her.

The bloke in the contrary looked a twat.

AuntieStella · 26/01/2015 19:31

It's the same as speaking up at the 'impediment' bit during a wedding.

Objections have to be heard.

And as pointed out, the rebuttal was ready.

grovel · 26/01/2015 19:56

TBH I think this was pre-negotiated. This guy was a standard "invitee" to the event. The C of E could have refused to invite him and given him free PR as he objected outside the Minster - or they could allow him in to object on pre-agreed terms.

He gets to object and looks like a wally. Sentanu gets to give a prepared rebuttal and looks rational and calm.

FWIW, we (DH and I - doubting Christians) thought Bishop Libby seemed lovely and rather inspirational.

windchime · 26/01/2015 20:03

The new bishop looks more like a bloke than the heckler, imo.

Hatespiders · 26/01/2015 20:05

I thought she looked very attractive, modern and stylish windchime

howtodrainyourflagon · 26/01/2015 20:07

#notinthebible

  1. microwave popcorn
  2. scrunchy hair bands
  3. potato-powered clocks
  4. playdoh
  5. 3 wise men (all we know is there were 3 gifts)
  6. having a sunday-morning communion service every week
  7. church flower rota
  8. nit shampoo
  9. loo roll
10. pasta

I hope for consistency's sake that the idiot objector had something to say about those too.

jaffajiffy · 26/01/2015 20:12

Paul Williamson is a "vexatious litigant" who is no longer allowed to bring court cases in England and Wales. Link here But still allowed to heckle and look like a knob

Hatespiders · 26/01/2015 20:14

Rubbish flagon! Jesus popped all the ready meals in His microwave at the Feeding of the 5000. And there was popcorn for afters.

Theboodythatrocked · 26/01/2015 20:19

Oh wind totally disagree I thought she looked serene and lovely.

Honestly for a cynical old piss taking atheist I was quite moved.

PunkrockerGirl · 26/01/2015 20:20

Yes, he's a dick. If I embarrassed my employer like that I'd expect to be dismissed. I thought Bishop Libby remained very dignified.
Why are we commenting on her appearance, btw? It's irrelevant and we wouldn't be if it was a male bishop.

Theboodythatrocked · 26/01/2015 20:21

how The last 3 on that list are surely part if the 10 survival commandments! Grin

Theboodythatrocked · 26/01/2015 20:22

punk agree.

Hatespiders · 26/01/2015 20:22

Punk oh yes I would. I've had a major crush on Sentamu for years! I think he's mouth-wateringly gorgeous!

Kewcumber · 26/01/2015 20:25

windchime are you serious?! Shock

Who cares what she looks like, she's being ordained as the first woman Bishop in the Church of England and thats your nugget of wisdom? Who cares what she looks like - she's not model.

Hatespiders · 26/01/2015 20:28

We sometimes go to the Shrine at Walsingham, and during the processions of pilgrimage you always get Protestant extremist people yelling "Papists! Idolatry!" and so on. The pilgrims continue along with enormous dignity and actually it makes the hecklers look totally pathetic. But nobody stops them shouting and that way they can let off steam fairly harmlessly.

Kewcumber · 26/01/2015 20:28

7. church flower rota

I feel sure that you haven't read your bible closely enough.

Personally I thought John Sentamu was well fit and his robes were a lovely colour, very flattering for his skin tone.

JoanJettPack · 26/01/2015 20:30

He's just jealous because he hasn't won his bishop badge yet.

CaptainHolt · 26/01/2015 20:33

I thought she looked gorgeous, not that it matters. The guy sounded like a total dick. What did he think was going to happen? ++Sentamu to say 'Oh, yes, we hadn't considered that. The ordination is off!'

Viviennemary · 26/01/2015 20:42

He was within his rights to protest if he doesn't agree with women bishops. Anyway the C of E has lost the plot and won't even be here in 100 years from now. IMHO.

MyrnaLoy · 26/01/2015 20:56

Windchime - I think that comment makes you a bit of an eejit.

I'd love it if just one time there could be a debate about something to do with women that didn't mention how we bastard-well look.

Theboodythatrocked · 26/01/2015 21:03

vivienne I totally get your point and I generally mistrust religions on masse as mysoginistic and controlling but if women like Libby start getting to the top jobs in all religions then there would be hope.

TwoAndTwoEqualsChaos · 26/01/2015 21:09

grovel, I hadn't thought of it like that.
