To think I could commute between Newcastle and York daily?

Ive been offered a place on a midwifery course in York. I live in Newcastle and don't drive.

I have a 6 month old DS and DP has a good job here so moving would be unrealistic - do you think it's possible to commute via train every day? It's around an hour and a half away.

Gods no. My midwifery degree was exhausting despite living 15 minutes from both uni and placement. You won't be able to do placement in hospitals that are out of area as we barely have enough mentors for the students belonging to our universities never mind anywhere else.

Our day shifts start at 7.30am and finish at 20.30pm, I have to leave the house at 6.15am as it is in order to get there and get changed and be ready for work. I live 20 minutes away. So you won't have parking to deal with but any delays and you're screwed. You're working for up to 13 hours and then up to 3 hours travelling time? So you get home at circa 11pm and then you have to get up at 5amish to do it all over again? With a small child? Honestly I know how midwifery grabs you but to even consider commuting is utter madness. That's not to mention the days when you only have to go to uni for an hour or you get there and lectures have been cancelled.

PM me if you want as I have a lot of experience of the uni/hospitals that would serve you better.

Sorry. Feel like I've pissed on your parade there. Blush

No not at all! I really appreciate it - i need someone to be realistic. I'm going to give commuting a go a few times and see how i find it then i'll decide, it's a huge decision so i really need to weigh up the pros and cons!

I've been on the Leeds-Newcastle (via York) train at rush hour - with pre-booked seats, and there's not a chance you'd be able to study it's packed. I was guaranteed a seat and got no work done, as there was just not enough room, and too much going on to concentrate on anything. I imagine it would be a lot quieter off-peak though!
