To recline my seat on a long haul flight?

PiratePanda · 25/01/2015 20:26

Just thought I'd check I was not BU.

Long haul flight in economy, 9 hours, overnight. I had my seat up for take off and landing and for meals but for the rest of the flight I wanted and needed to sleep (travelling for work) so reclined my seat.

The woman sitting behind me made an enormous fuss about me reclining my seat at all, complaining rudely to me when I reclined it, tutting and sighing loudly whenever she got up to go to the loo, kneeing me in the back apparently with intent, and hitting me quite hard and insistently on the head and shaking the chair to make me wake up in the morning well before the breakfast came round.

IWNBU was I? You are entitled to recline your seat except for take off and landing and meals, no? Otherwise why provide a recline button?

God she was rude.

I tend not to recline, because I always think of the poor sods in the back row who can't recline. So I recline, bloke behind reclines and so on until you get someone who has bugger all space and nothing they can do about it. And it doesn't recline enough to make sleep more likely.

In the last ten years of 20+ trips a year, I have never not been able to recline my seat in the back row/row before the loos. What godforsaken airline companies are you people flying on?!

Someone complained about my DH reclining in front of them once. The air steward told her that my DH was doing nothing wrong by reclining, and he would not ask him to put his seat up.

So she asked another steward. She said the same thing.

PiratePanda · 25/01/2015 20:46

Look, if she'd had a child on her lap of course I wouldn't have reclined. That should go without saying. But she did not.

It's when the selfish fuckers at exit rows recline without checking that I get a little Angry

Sparklingbrook · 25/01/2015 20:47

I have never been able to sleep on a plane whether upright reclined or with a whole row to myself. Sad

PiratePanda · 25/01/2015 20:47

Well at least that sounds like an objective answer Ptolemy.

YWNBU. I've just come back from a round the world trip so 4 long haul, 12 hour+ flights. The worst one by far was when we were in the row behind the bulkhead seats, and the three people in that row immediately reclined all the way, even though they had so much more room than pretty much everyone else. They pushed back well before dinner was served, and the cabin crew had to ask them to put them up for meals. They were even putting their feet up on the wall in front of them - really rude behavior. The girl in front of me was so entitled. She gave me death stares for putting my bag under the seat in front of me (so my space) as she put her shoes under there and I pushed them out (didn't know they were there). The highlight was when she flipped her ponytail over the seat back and covered my tv screen with her hair.

Can't bear selfish, thoughtless plane behavior. It's sucks for everyone, use your brain a little and it will be that much easier for us all.

thelittlebooktroll · 25/01/2015 20:47

I work as cabin crew and would like to ban reclining seatsGrinI am quite certain it's the reason for most air rage incidents.

Primafacie · 25/01/2015 20:48

Joanne I was trying to sleep and said "no thanks" to the food.

Except that by keeping your seat reclined while the man behind you was eating, you were very inconsiderate and made his meal miserable. Nevermind whether it is your right to do so, it was unkind. And bragging of nearly breaking his finger makes you sound like a thug and a bully.

lem73 · 25/01/2015 20:48

I don't understand how many people are saying they travel with infants on their laps and have people sitting in front of them. I have three dcs and travelled with all of them on airplanes. We were always allocated the front row. I wouldn't have dreamt of flying on an airline which wouldn't give me the front row.

Sparklingbrook · 25/01/2015 20:49

I hate flying. Squished up in close confinement with all those strangers and their filthy habits.
Then 3 days later you go down with all their vile germs.

PiratePanda · 25/01/2015 20:49

Booktroll, just out of curiosity, how common would my experience of - er - wanking man be?

PtolemysNeedle · 25/01/2015 20:51

I'm not even sure that people should be able to expect the seat in front of them to stay upright if they have a baby with them. Especially not on long flights.

We are all different so some people find it more comfortable to sleep with the seat reclined, and some are not bothered. The people who it makes a difference to should not be expected to stay awake or be uncomfortable just because someone else has chosen to fly with a baby.

londonrach · 25/01/2015 20:53

Reclining should be banned end of story....

Only1scoop · 25/01/2015 20:54

Pp I also am cc and can honestly say in 20 years plus flying I've had only one blanket wanker....although I've witnessed 'loo lingus' with man on his knees Blush

Dirty animals....those floors are minging Confused

Sorry, what?? ShockShock

lampygirl · 25/01/2015 20:55

Night flight, long haul, reclining is fine, but should be put back up for meal times regardless of whether or not you are eating as the person behind you might want a meal.

Short haul, just not needed.

If it's a daytime flight long haul I think I would judge it based on what most other people were doing as if everyone reclines then everyone gets the same legroom.

Viviennemary · 25/01/2015 20:56

You shouldn't have reclined your seat for the whole nine hours. That was quite selfish IMHO. What if the person in front wanted something to eat or drink. It would have been difficult.

HazleNutt · 25/01/2015 20:56

YANBU, reclining makes a massive difference and on 9-hour night flights, people should be able to sleep. I have had people behind me complaining, I happily call a member of the cabin crew over, who will explain that yes, I have the right to recline. Reclining during meal times is inconsiderate though, whether you're eating yourself or not.

PiratePanda · 25/01/2015 20:57

To be clear I only recline when I want to sleep and always return to upright for meals for the sake of those behind me. I might recline if the person in front of me reclines and I need to work on my laptop, but generally only for sleeping.
