to post a note through my neighbours doors?

Long story short, my outdoor cat is a bit of a flirt and my fairly new neighbours appear to have decided to claim him by removing collars etc. They know he's mine as we have spoken about the 'wandering cat' before. Aibu to post a general note around the street telling people not to feed him and if he comes in to put him straight back out?

Good luck with that...

Have you asked them directly to stop taking his collar off?

Also, might be worth telling them that he is microchipped so if he goes missing, he can always be returned to you but you prefer to keep his collar on anyway.

Just so they know that they can't try to claim him! Without accusing them of having that intention of course.

Maybe they are not trying to nick him though, but are people who think collars are cruel or something.

I wonder if maybe it might be worth saying that he's on a special medical diet and it would be harmful to him to feed him. I've read that advice on similar threads and it seemed like a good way to get a result without being confrontational.

Wow. Cheeky feckers. There's no misunderstanding here, they intend claiming your cat. I think you need to be much more direct. Tell them he's your cat and you don't appreciate them taking his collar off. You could also tell them he has (insert health problem) and they could kill him feeding him the wrong food.

Read this and be warned.

Well, quick update, they moved out and the collar has stayed put. He now wears a do not feed tag to try stop the neighbour down the street from giving him kitchen left overs. Cat ownership is fun.

We had the same issues. OldDessertCat now also wears a 'do not feed' tag and a microchip tag. Why can't these people get their own damn pets!?

wowfudge · 09/04/2015 12:05

Because they like having a pet around for short periods, but don't want the responsibility full time. It's like a cute timeshare to them.

Some of them are also deluded that they are somehow preferred or chosen. They prefer this interpretation to cats being opportunists who like extra food or a change of scene from time to time. Oh and the cost of getting a cat in the first place.
