im 27 weeks pregnant. i work in a school kitchen i wear gloves but only when i really have to. which is only when we are serving food. i have been serving food for past couple of weeks so means i have had the gloves on a lot. i end up with rashes all over my hands that sting. not real bad but a bit annoying. and if i cut say watermelon for my kids that night it stings like a bitch.

also i got behinde on my washing as washing machine broke. i had as least 20 black sacks. :( im just starting to get there got about 5 sacks to go. i have never stuck to the same washing powder/liquids etc i just buy what ever deals there are. i bought one that has 85 washes. i have a rash on my neck where my jumper/top sits on my neck . and all up the insides of my legs... i really do not want to do all that washing again!

so im wondering could my skin have come more sensitive due to pregnancy. could it be harmful to baby?

I don't know about getting them but my SIL lost her allergy to certain sugars during pregnancy. She ate buckets of ice cream which would normally have put her in hospital. Very weird.

Have you tried non-latex gloves?

Singleandproud · 25/01/2015 15:21

Yes, I have a mild latex allergy (hands go like yours have) and the Midwife told me to be extra careful as allergies can become worse with pregnancy.

Singleandproud · 25/01/2015 15:22

Also it might not be the gloves you are allergic to but the powder inside them.

ddubsgirl77 · 25/01/2015 15:24

Your body can be more.surseptial to allergies when pregnant

choirmumoftwo · 25/01/2015 15:26

I also had the reverse of this. Used to suffer from really debilitating hayfever but have barely sneezed since I was pregnant with DS 16 years ago. Very strange!

engeika · 25/01/2015 15:26

Yes - I had allergies to all sorts of things when pregnant which disappeared when baby was born.

NeverFinishWhatYouStarted · 25/01/2015 15:28

The only time in my life I had hay fever was when pregnant with DS. It was awful, but I've never had it before or since. DS has terrible hay fever though.

ghostspirit · 25/01/2015 15:29

i think the gloves are latex and powder free will have to check.. main thing im worried about is could it harm baby at all? im thinking probably not but like to be sure. if no harm to baby then i mght just put up with it

Yes from me too.

After having my son I can no longer wear anything with nickel in.

Gold being a major one, unless it was "pure" of course.

Hence, my expensive tastes are not my fault Grin

DramaAlpaca · 25/01/2015 15:32

Like NeverFinish I got dreadful hay fever when pregnant with DS3. Never had it before or since.

Idontseeanysontarans · 25/01/2015 15:40

I was very sensitive to washing powders when pregnant - all 3 times I had to change to the gentlest non bio one I could find. Unfortunately it's usually the most expensive.

KatoPotato · 25/01/2015 15:51

Gosh yes, I can't go to my friends house atm because I've developed a cat allergy! Had my own cat for years but now my eyes are streaming and my face goes blotchy when I sit in her living room! The twisted cat who's never usually looked the road I'm on is suddenly making a bee-line for me too!

hestialou · 25/01/2015 17:14

I was told allegies and intolerances where driven by hormonal changes, so I guess it is possible to change due to pregnancy x

Tinks42 · 25/01/2015 17:30

I totally agree with you there hestialou.

Hormones govern rather a lot it seems.

Im now the other side of menopause and look back on the symptoms I used to get two weeks before bleeding were....

Bad indigestion (so much so I had to go on gut coating tablets)
Constipation then all was let loose when bleeding

The list goes on but these were the worst.

SecretRed · 25/01/2015 17:33

I became allergic to my Mum's cat when pregnant with my now 13 yo dd. I'm still allergic now!

Allstoppedup · 25/01/2015 17:33

I was covered in PUPP rash when I hit 22 weeks and pitched like crazy until 3 weeks after DS was born. My skin went very sensitive when I was pregnant, it's sadly stayed that way and I'm forever getting rash/ dermatitis reactions! I have no idea why!

Antihistamines are your friend.

iamdivergent · 25/01/2015 18:01

Yes - i because allergic to wax (like for waxing brows etc) when pregnant with DD1, I because non allergic again until pg with dd2 and I've never gotten over it this time!

DoJo · 25/01/2015 18:44

I already had allergies when I became pregnant, and some of the abated while I was pregnant (and during breastfeeding) whereas I developed at least two new ones. One was to penicillin which they will no longer prescribe me so I don't know if it has continued!

However, as far as I am aware there is no risk to the baby unless you are getting serious symptoms, in which case it would be the treatment which would potentially do the harm so they would only administer it if there were no choice IYSWIM. When I had to call an ambulance the paramedics actually called the maternity ward at the hospital to check which drugs they could give me before administering anything.

I can recommend Aveeno for sore hands (assuming you aren't allergic to that!) as it is really effective but doesn't seem as greasy as some of the creams out there.
