Pil have come round for tea. All fine and we get on well. However, mil has picked up the crossword from today's copy of the times and started filling it in!
I realise I'm being precious but we haven't had a chance to look at it yet and enjoy filling it in(it's a big one at the weekend) together.
I'm a bit Angry although I haven't said anything!

YANBU; it's very rude and selfish.

Hatespiders · 24/01/2015 18:48

YANBU. I'd be very cross. I love my crossword and no-one is allowed to touch the paper. My sis does the Times one and woe betide you if you even pick up the blessed thing merely to have a look.

pigwitch · 24/01/2015 18:51

Yabu. It's a crossword!

ToyStory3 · 24/01/2015 18:52

Why don't you just tell her you'd like to fill it in?

Ohmydayz · 24/01/2015 18:53

I would be having a very cross word! Wink

Nervo · 24/01/2015 18:53

Does she know that you do it?

I wouldn't do my Mum or Dad's crosswords but I might do the one in MIL's paper as she doesn't do them. I wouldn't expect her to be offended.

jonicomelately · 24/01/2015 18:54

Only the English Middle-class!
Grin

MaryWestmacott · 24/01/2015 18:55

It's rude, you don't start filling in someone else's crossword without asking first, it's bad manners. Yes, op could say something, but it's better not to be rude than just be rude and wait to see if your rudeness upsets someone.

Hide it next time they come over.

FruChristerOla · 24/01/2015 18:55

YANBU. It's extremely impolite to do the crossword in a newspaper that belongs to someone else.

Clearly you are not a crossword fiend, pig? Grin

TheReluctantCountess · 24/01/2015 18:55

I'd have asked first.

SurlyCue · 24/01/2015 18:55

Only the English Middle-class!

Yep! Grin

SorchaN · 24/01/2015 18:56

That would annoy me. Can your partner have a word with her?

startwig1982 · 24/01/2015 18:59

The last time she did it I did say something along the lines of 'I haven't had a chance to look at it yet' but she carried on anyway.

I know it's only a little thing but it really annoys me!

At time like this I'd find it best to beat her to near death with the Thesaurus.

That'll learn her.

Nervo · 24/01/2015 19:02

It's night time though. Crosswords should be done by now.

GokTwo · 24/01/2015 19:03

Yes it's a little bit rude but it's not something I'd bother about.

Vinomcstephens · 24/01/2015 19:05

It's rude and YANBU. But why on earth don't you tell her? You don't have to be hard faced about it, just tell her that you like to do the crossword and would ask that she doesn't complete it in future. Then she will know and hopefully problem solved. If she's unaware that it's pissed you off, she won't know not to do it - so tell her!

ajandjjmum · 24/01/2015 19:05

It's an irritation but not a major issue.

AwfulBeryl · 24/01/2015 19:06

Grin at I would have a cross word.
It's no big deal, why don't you do it with her ? You could bond in a middle class English way Wink

joanne1947 · 24/01/2015 19:08

Hide it next time they come over. or even better take time and complete it and neatly refold the paper so she is surprised to see it all finished.

BroodySince22 · 24/01/2015 19:08

It's just a crossword... people have worse things to be miffed about. She wouldn't have done it to be rude

BroodySince22 · 24/01/2015 19:10

AwfulBeryl us working class are more than capable of finding enjoyment in crossword puzzles too.

Wantsunshine · 24/01/2015 19:10

She's a guest make her feel welcome and don't make an issue. If you need a crossword tonight then find one online. Surely wine would only be this important though and there is no online version of that ??

MaryWestmacott · 24/01/2015 19:11

Speak to your DP, if he's not going to say something, then you will have to either a) hide the paper on days she's visiting, b) photocopy the crossword (if your home printer will do that) before she starts, or c) he is responsible for buying a second paper on days his mum is visiting.
