AIBU to have a 'break in case of emergency' bottle of dozol sitting on the bathroom shelf for when ds has a nasty cold and can't sleep?

I know the labelling changed for the likes of dozol and medised and I know the reasons why they changed it (I've read up on it a lot!) My personal opinion is that the benefits of giving a half dose when ds is congested and waking every few hours outweigh the small risks. I used it with my dd (now 6) before the rules changed. What do you think? Anyone else have one on stand by?!

I've never heard of it, what is it? A seditive?

Hoppinggreen · 22/01/2015 14:15

Never heard of Dozol but I did continue to use Medised even after the labelling changed and on the advice of a GP friend.

DandyHighwayman · 22/01/2015 14:20

We never used medised anyway

Calpol and brufen piggyback plus parental tag teaming was adequate

MrsTerryPratchett · 22/01/2015 14:20

I wish I did. Last time I went to try to get something for a nasty cough/cold for DD they tried to sell be $12 homeopathic sugar water cough medicine. I was really annoyed about that.

Hakluyt · 22/01/2015 14:24

[shrug] Wouldn't risk it myself. But, to quote the famous Mumsnet saying "your child, your choice".

absolute bollocks, of course, but many mumsnetters seem to live by it

Felyne · 22/01/2015 14:26

How old is your DS?

Whateverittakes3 · 22/01/2015 14:27

I'd never heard of dozol before I googled medised to death! It has exactly the same ingredients as medised - paracetamol and diphenhydramine which is an antihistamine that can help decongest and aids sleep. You can get it on online pharmacy sites.

Ds is almost 2

Hmmm, how would you go about deciding how much to give though? I love the idea of getting my DS (2.5) to sleep through the night for once but I'm not sure I could bring myself to drug him. I know other people have used phenergan to aid sleep but in some kids it causes hyperactivity - just my luck dozol would have that same effect on mine!

Whateverittakes3 · 22/01/2015 14:46

I wouldn't advise giving it just to help your little one sleep through Felyne (think that was one of the factors in the change to the rules - parents giving routinely to get their babies to sleep! ) I'd only give it if ds had a nasty cold which was preventing him from getting a decent nights sleep. I'd give half - three quarters of the recommended dose on the bottle. Even though a full dose was considered safe when dd was young.

grocklebox · 22/01/2015 14:48

I would (and have) but you should know that in a significant minority of children it has the opposite effect and makes them epically hyperactive and wired until it wears off

Offler · 22/01/2015 15:16

It made DD projectile vomit. I was very disappointed...

Whateverittakes3 · 22/01/2015 15:43

Oh no groclebox and Offler. Not good experiences!

I take Panadol Night when I'm feeling grotty (same thing in bigger dose), and I always feel so much better the next morning.

Tbh, I didn't even know Medised was still available. I thought it was removed from sale a few years ago. I might have to investigate for the littlest one.

ShatnersBassoon · 22/01/2015 15:54

Just googled, and Medised isn't available now. I guess it just isn't safe for younger children, so I probably won't go looking for Dozol.

pantsjustpants · 22/01/2015 15:58

Medised worked brilliantly with dd (now 8). A decent nights sleep without a bunged up nose really made the difference. She didn't get it every night or for every cold, but as a once off every now and again. I've never used it for ds (3), tbh I didn't realise you could even still buy it. I'd definitely consider it, but not sure it would be suitable for ds.

Strictlyison · 22/01/2015 16:11

I do, but rarely use it. DS has tonsillitis a couple times a year and wakes up with the pain - so dozol helps him 'sleep it off'. He is 9 though, and I think I have used it since he was about 6.

vintagesewingmachine · 22/01/2015 16:40

I miss Phenergan. Sadly now prescription only...

Queenofknickers · 22/01/2015 16:42

Of course. I remember being told to give it yo my 12 week old baby by the doctor (obviously many years ago) .
