Depends on the airline

Check the website of the airline you're flying with. I very recently had to travel within the UK on British Airways and they said only that photo ID (eg a driving licence) might be needed. In the event, though, I was never asked to show anything.

Your drivers license will do fine. My dad flies weekly to London and never takes passport anymore. If in doubt, take it though!

Ryanair yes, and you have to have 6 months on the passport. . . . .

Now a Gov rule but their company rules, unless have changed in last 6 months

thanks all!

I flew to Ireland on my driving licence about 2 years ago, but I'm not sure.

Think it's best to take them rather than be left stranded.

Normally you need the passport because we don't have many official forms of photographic identification in the UK. We bizarrely got very angry as a populace when identity cards were touted, but in France they have them and they are SO BLOODY CONVENIENT.

I think it's generally a passport or a photo drivers license, but I know a lot of people who don't have a photo license, or any license at all. Obviously kids don't have that as an option either.

The reasons for needing ID are pretty obvious - I might have misunderstood the question. But yes, airlines need to know who is on a flight. It's partly to prevent ticket swapping, but mainly down to security reasons. It's standard practise.

I think Ryanair will accept a driving licence for domestic flights. (Not international.)

CMOTDibbler · 22/01/2015 10:39

Over 16's need photo ID, which doesn't have to be a passport. You can check your airlines website for acceptable forms of ID
