..coal miners when the pits closed because of cheap foreign coal?
Is it because farmers are more middle clarrsss. Have nice houses send their Dc to private schools and drive new land Rovers?

Hmm

Bit young to remember the 1985 miners' strike, are you?

I think the coal mines closing was quite a big 'thing'...

I'm from South Wales and trust me - people cared about the closing of the pits.

And the basis for your non fact is. .?

I know quite a few farmers. None send their kids to private schools, and they all drive ancient cars.
I want fresh milk produced in this country. Farmers are losing money for every pint they produce. I would rather pay a bit more for milk so we can have fresh milk.

What makes you think people care more about dairy farmers / less about miners? Have I missed something?

Congratulations. Have a Biscuit for managing to fit so many sweeping generalisations onto two sentences.

AIBU to wonder why people start fact-free goady threads?

Seriously? Hmm

The closure of the coal mines was huge. There was uproar at the time.

It's possible to care about more than one thing! I've not normally got huge sympathy for farmers on the whole, but I think the dairy farmers really have a point. They're really being screwed on prices.

Mumsnet wasn't created until the early 2000s. The only thing you can say abut this is that people didn't use social media until social media was developed Confused

If you'd left it at ..... then you'd've done well, it is odd why dairy farmers are thought of more than other groups, and it's odd that rich British people are thought of more than poor foreign ones.

But by picking a different group, then it shows you're really just shilling for a different vested interest the same as all the dairy farmers, who just have good PR at the moment.

Yet another raving OP. I mean, don't get me wrong, the internet is fabulous but the trouble with it is that some very odd people find their way online.

Well the miners and their families and those relying on the mining community for thier own income, clearly protested. Not the general public though.People weren't saying 'how can I pay more for my coal' or ' demanding to pay more for their electricity.

Oh and I know many dairy farmers in this area and they are far from poor.

The mines are closed?

OMG

26Point2Miles · 22/01/2015 09:14

Trust me..... People did care about the miners strikes and all things coal related!!!

What evidence do you have to suggest otherwise op??

Report
ChazsBrilliantAttitude · 22/01/2015 09:15

Yes the general public protested. There was huge, justified, concern about the wider impact of the closure of the mines.

Report
26Point2Miles · 22/01/2015 09:15

Completely different scenario op

Miners worked for the mines.....dairy farmers work for themselves

There may be some slight differences in the two situations OP

Report
PausingFlatly · 22/01/2015 09:15

And another Hmm.

Many of the general public did protest, and there were many collections to support the miners.

Report
RandomNPC · 22/01/2015 09:15

The miners did have allies, I remember people shaking tins and collecting for them at the time. The government had to use the police as a political tool because the miners were getting support from elsewhere. I haven't actually seen people marching in the streets in support of dairy farmers yet! Your analysis is crap.
