To think that it's appalling that working men are not allowed to eat at certain restaurants?

So, just started dating this guy. Very well educated (bachelor degree), nicely spoken. He works as an electrician. He recently mentioned that we would have liked to have lunch at Bill's (fairly casual restaurant chain in London) but couldn't as working men are not allowed to eat inside (only in their outdoor sitting area). Apparently this is the case with many other restaurant chains in London.

AIBU to think this is appalling behaviour and even might be illegal?

Wait, is Bill's owned by that sinister Australian with the serial killer smile?

I think Bill's is very reasonably priced actually. And the food is nice. The decor and the fripperies are not really to my taste, but the halloumi and mushroom burger thingy is great.

BreakingDad77 · 23/01/2015 14:36

I think he has wrong end of the stick, its as other have said bloke in grubby hi vis, dirty boots, some sort of solvent/cement/paint/asphalt etc smeared over some or all of there clothes.

Though I must admit there has been work to improve handwashing, though generally when you go to public loo I see less 'walkers' in zombie films!!! Grin

squoosh, no that's Bill Granger and his restaurants are called Granger & Co.

OnIlkleyMoorBahTwat · 23/01/2015 16:24

I think in this case 'Bill' used to have a single restaurant/deli in Lewes called 'Bill's Produce Store', which I had heard of. According to his website, he then opened a second one in Brighton and then some time after that there are now fecking dozens of them almost all over the country, which until this thread, I was unaware of.

I've looked it up. I wouldn't trust Bill's.

In that kind of restaurant, I always want a hamburger.

I am infuriated when they are small and impaled with a cocktail stick because they are small and mean and nothing balances without it and when you take the stick out it all falls apart.

From the picture it looks minute and I am not fooled by close-up. It also looks suspiciously like it's served on a breadboard which is another of my hates.

I also hate places that call perfectly ordinary things Bill's this or that.

And I don't like the bubbly writing on the blackboards.

limitedperiodonly · 23/01/2015 17:17

And their obsession with 'skin-on fries' is because they can't be arsed to peel potatoes but are pretending that their chips don't come in huge ready-prepared catering packs.

I now realise from the website that my mum and I ate there at Westfield, White City.

The waiter was nice. The rest of it was bloody awful. Standard of food, portion size, noise, chaos - I had to go up to the bar because the waiter was rushed off his feet - packing in of tables that made me nervous about handbag theft. The bill was reasonable but all-in-all, we should have gone to McDonalds.

I was a bit embarrassed because it spoiled a little treat for her.

I've nothing against chains. I like All Bar One a lot. I've never gone to Byron.

wish we had this rule had to clean up after some smelly loud mouthed workmen today boots covered in oil and grim floors were covered they only bought cheapy coffees too Angry didnt even say sorry when j was stood theres shoveling dirt chunks into the bin and mopping up muddy water

Salmotrutta · 24/01/2015 11:14

Are workmen doomed to a life of eating cold sandwiches outside? Sad

StoorieHoose · 24/01/2015 11:41

They obviously just go into cafés to use the loo judging by the amount of threads on here about snotty folk not letting them use their precious toilets

ghostyslovesheep · 24/01/2015 11:49

workers surely? or people in work clothes

or do only men work these days?

FishCanFly · 24/01/2015 12:19

Go to Bill's on weekend.

helpmekeepstrong · 24/01/2015 16:01

Are you getting a bit more than you bargained for OP?
Never been to Bill's. I used to work as a landscapers labourer.... was often v v grubby. This was not an issue tho because I didn't earn enough to go to restaurants. Grin

SunnyBaudelaire · 24/01/2015 16:04

I had no idea that Bill's of Lewes had gone viral.

How depressing.

alittlethyme · 24/01/2015 16:20

I went to the one in brighton ten ish years ago. Never went back, expensive and wanky. I remember it was part grocery shop part restaurant. Kind of like carlochios. I'm tempted to get my muddy walking gear on and go there for some sparkling water.

maddening · 24/01/2015 16:22

There's nothing stopping him changing into smart casual clothes.

Salmotrutta · 24/01/2015 21:32

It would appear that the "joys" of Bill's has not yet hit Scotland as far as I can see.

Hopefully Devo-Max will ensure that we never have to worry about Bill and his rules up here.

Because frankly, Bill like someone I'd rather avoid.

HTH

Salmotrutta · 24/01/2015 21:33

Bill Sounds like someone ...

MyFriendlyDaemon · 24/01/2015 22:48

They are opening one in Glasgow. I'd not heard of them but they seem to be in the same ball park as All Bar One and Brown's but possibly not as nice as Brown's.

The opening post seems a bit of a fuss about nothing. I'm sure there are loads of places aren't keen on obviously dirty work clothes.
