Should I be worried? Baby banged head

Ds, 11months, banged his head at about 3 & has been grumpy ever since, which is out of character for him. He fell straight back from kneeling up straight. I've given calpol about 5 mins ago in case of headache, as I read not to give ibuprofen if bang to head. Sad

Did he have a nap after or did you try and keep him up due to the bump? If you have behaved differently or his day has been altered that could be the reason for the grumpiness. You can always call 111 if you are ever nervous

RoyallyFuckedOff · 21/01/2015 17:21

(for what it is worth though babies are designed to take a good bump)

confusedofengland · 21/01/2015 17:24

No, he had just woken from a nap. I don't think I've been any different with him. He's just so very miserable & it's not like him at all. I hate seeing him like this Sad Maybe will see if he'll eat some dinner (had 7oz formula & biscuit after the event & finished those).

I wouldn't worry unless he is acting significantly differently - my son gave his head a huge wallop when he was just a bit older than yours, but at the front. It came up in such a big lump he could see it (and kept doing this Hmm to be able to!) but the doctor just said that if he seemed to be having trouble doing things he normally could co-ordination-wise or acted noticeably different from normal then it was a cause for concern, but otherwise it would heal on its own.

Head injuries are difficult to assess in babies. If you're worried, take him to A&E. Watch out for worrying symptoms, see link:

ahbollocks · 21/01/2015 17:33

I would take him in to a and e or out of hours- my dd pulled a chair on top of herself at that age and docs and nurses couldn't have been kinder. They said with under 1's they always prefer to check them ovee and it is no trouble

confusedofengland · 21/01/2015 17:33

ok, he's falling asleep now. only been awake 2.5 hours after 1.5 hour nap. sometimes naps around this time but rarely now. If he was tired could explain grumpiness I guess. so very worried. please excuse typos, on phone with ds on my lap

Is this your first? If so you should probably get used to spending the next, oh 18 years or so.... down there. Get acquainted with it, find out where the vending machines are... the rank cafeteria. It'll be your home away from home Grin

ahbollocks · 21/01/2015 17:40

Google concussion symptoms, if he is sick, dilated pupils (different sizes) and just as a warning sometimes with a big bang they can have seizures

RandomNPC · 21/01/2015 17:44

In my former life on NHS direct, I'd have advised take him to A&E. He's cranky, more tired than usual and less that 1 year old. You're only going to worry yourself sick otherwise.

confusedofengland · 21/01/2015 17:56

Royally, no he's my third! Never had this before though. Only 1 a&e trip in over 6 yearsShock

hot damn, are you lucky or am I extraordinarily unlucky? Hmm

If you are on your third I'd say you've got a good idea of "normal". Can't hurt to pop down A&E can it?

confusedofengland · 21/01/2015 18:14

Think I've been lucky with the DC's health, tbh. The only thing they've had between all 3 of them has been 1 ear infection (ds1), burst eardrum (ds3) & conjunctivitis (ds1 & 2). Plus the usual colds. We're often at hospital/clinic for ds2's speech delay/suspected autism, but that's different I think.

Ds3 seems a lot perkier now. Just wolfed down favourite foods & seems brighter for it Smile

He ended up getting even grumpier & running a temperature, so I rang 111 for advice. They said to take him to A&E, which I did. Once there, the triage nurse said he almost certainly didn't have a head injury, but maybe had an ear infection (ears were red, had burst eardrum a few weeks ago).

By the time we saw the doctor, roughly 1.5 hours after that, with some ibuprofen inside him, he was as perky as could be, playing with all the toys in the waiting room & waving at the doctor Hmm The doctor could not find anything wrong, but noted he had a temperature of 39.7 at triage, so we are to give Calpol as required.

Oh bless him. It's possible that the ear infection made him wobbly in the first place, hence the fall.

I'm glad he's been seen and hope he's on the mend soon.

RandomNPC · 21/01/2015 22:47

Glad he's been checked out and is feeling a bit better
