To be concerned about the amount I drink?

puds11isNAUGHTYnotNAICE · 21/01/2015 09:32

The doctor asked me to keep a fluid intake diary as I thought I was probably drinking too much fluid in the day.

Turns out I am drinking 7-9 LITRES of fluid a day!

Does anyone else drink this much? Am I damaging myself???

What are you drinking? Is that 7-9 litres of water?

Davsmum · 21/01/2015 09:36

Seems a lot to me but the doctor should advise you. I drink about 2 to 3 litres.

pbwer · 21/01/2015 09:36

Is this Gin?

dietcokeandwine · 21/01/2015 09:42

That is a lot OP.

I think 2-3 litres is about the recommended level? Significantly more is potentially a problem I think but the doctor will advise you no doubt.

Do you drink this much because you feel you should, or because you are constantly thirsty?

ilikebaking · 21/01/2015 09:44

I drink a lot, but realistically I get through 1 litre overnight, and 2 to 3 litres through the day. If I have tea or soft drinks it's more, the litres are just water.
7 to 9 litres sounds like a lot, but if you exercise a, lot and feel you need it, can it be harmful? Wasn't there a thing in the news about drinking lots of water and it killing you?

How do you manage to drink that much? Is it while sitting at a desk? If so, might it average out to less on weekends?

I'm now tempted to record my drinks! Though I think they are woefully low in amount.

theRotcod · 21/01/2015 09:46

I drink two-three litres of water and then may have a couple of cups of coffee or a fruit juice. Most days it's just the water though.

Sounds to me like you are drinking an excessive amount. We get liquid in a lot of food don't forget so you might be having even more! Are you really thirsty? Maybe a blood test for diabetes is in order.

InfinitySeven · 21/01/2015 09:48

God I struggle to get a litre or two in a day, and it's almost never water.

7 - 9 litres is huge! I imagine a diabetes test will be on the cards.

Do you not need to pee all the time?!

firesidechat · 21/01/2015 09:51

You can do damage if you drink too much fluids, but the wrong amount depends on so many things. I would take advice from the doctor on this one.

That is a lot and you must spend half your time drinking and the other half in the loo. Smile

puds11isNAUGHTYnotNAICE · 21/01/2015 09:58

This includes tea, coffee, water and squash.

I am CONSTANTLY thirsty! I drank a pint of water earlier, walked upstairs and was thirsty by the time I got up there!

I do very little exercise, am about 10 stone if that matters.

I would say I go to the toilet probably once an hour. This is a problem!

nikki1978 · 21/01/2015 09:58

Can't you die from drinking those sorts of amounts? Electrolyte imbalance or something?

nikki1978 · 21/01/2015 09:59

Have you been tested for diabetes?

puds11isNAUGHTYnotNAICE · 21/01/2015 09:59

Patilla no, I always carry drinks with me and fill up when they run out, so it is the same at the weekend.

TheCowThatLaughs · 21/01/2015 10:00

Is the Dr going to investigate the reason for your raging thirst op?

puds11isNAUGHTYnotNAICE · 21/01/2015 10:01

nikki, yes I have read that, hence the concern. I think I may be damaging my salt/potassium levels with excessive consumption. I'm having a blood test next month to find out.

I was tested twice in my teens, but it was negative.

OP posts:
puds11isNAUGHTYnotNAICE · 21/01/2015 10:03

I really hope so TheCow Obviously I am concerned that I am hurting myself, but the main concern is how damn impractical it is. I always need to have a drink with me, and get anxious if I don't have one, plus the excessive drinking leads to excessive toilet use and I am concerned about being caught short.

OP posts:
ErnesttheBavarian · 21/01/2015 10:13

what happens if you don't drink?

Do you know if it's physical or psychological? Or a mixture, could it be? There must be the odd occasion where you can't get a drink/refill, what then?

I would be concerned about the damage of drinking so much. If a diabetes test comes back negative I hope you're doc doesn't give up and that you don't have to battle for an answer.

best wishes.

TheCowThatLaughs · 21/01/2015 10:13

Is there a possibility that you've developed a compulsion to keep drinking and you're not actually always thirsty?

You're not on lithium are you? I drink masses due to that.

ImperialBlether · 21/01/2015 10:26

Puds, I would go into a supermarket pharmacy today and get tested for diabetes. Unquenchable thirst is a symptom.

puds11isNAUGHTYnotNAICE · 21/01/2015 10:31

I am on no medication.

If I don't drink I get a headache, which is why I think it might be physical, but then it could be psychological as my parents where of the age where you only got one drink with your meal, and once it was gone there was no more. The thought of trying to eat a meal without a drink is terrifying!

Imperial do they do that in all supermarkets? How do they test for it?

OP posts:
InfinitySeven · 21/01/2015 10:49

They do a prick finger test. Any supermarket with a pharmacy should be able to do it - I've had it done in Sainsburys and a big Morrisons.

puds11isNAUGHTYnotNAICE · 21/01/2015 11:04

Thanks Infinity How much does it cost?

OP posts:
ImperialBlether · 21/01/2015 11:32

Asda and Tesco do free testing.
