To think that if you're going to sell something second hand, make sure it's clean?

Picked up a swivel bath seat today second hand (£4), it was being sold on a local FB page for selling baby items. When she handed it over at her front door, my immediate thought was that it was absolutely filthy (not just dusty, I mean like black dirt in all the cracks) and not in good shape either. Why oh why did I not just say then that I didn't want it?? Obviously kicking myself and I know it's my own fault for not saying anything - just stupid and too polite for my own good! I got home and threw it straight in the bin. Before you tell me I'm a numpty, I know I shouldn't have taken it but why on earth would anyone sell something so filthy and badly worn (and not mention that in the post)?

Anyone else had this happen to them?

Oh I know! I bought a baby walker on Ebay and it was filthy! Who'd DO that? Give something over in that condition? It's weird! How difficult is it to clean something? I think a lot of people have no standards when it comes to cleanliness.

sarkymare · 20/01/2015 13:46

Yes! I bought some toys for my 1yo from an old school friend. She wanted £15 for them but as there was two bags full and a large selection I gave £20. I got them home and they was filthy. I had to disinfect each toy and properly scrub them with an old toothbrush to get all of the crap from in all the awkward places. In the end out of two huge bags full of toys, only 5 of them were in a good enough condition (even after cleaning them) for him to play with. I could have bought each of those toys brand new and still had change from a twenty. I was so cross.

I have a swivel bath seat and couldn't get on with it. I found it really awkward to use. Some of friends have them and love them though. Its in good condition and is clean. If you are near me (Bristol) you can have it if you like.

Reddottys12 · 20/01/2015 13:51

Sarkymare that's so sweet of you to offer! Bless you. I bet it's super clean too ;)

I'm unfortunately not near you otherwise I would have said yes.

Did you ever say anything to your friend about the toys?

Not had it personally but I see loads of things advertised with 'just needs a wipe' or 'small tear easily repaired' and wonder why they don't do it themselves and then they can say 'clean condition'...

MrsTawdry · 20/01/2015 14:15

Me too ham! I think WELL THEN WIPE IT YOU LAZY BUGGER!

"Needs a clean"

THEN DO IT!

Angry
sarkymare · 20/01/2015 17:19

No I haven't spoken to her since. Not that I spoke to her much beforehand anyway.

Not a problem and you're right it is spotless Wink

BadtzMaru · 20/01/2015 17:32

Well, I did freecycle a baby trampoline that was a bit grubby from being in the garden and I couldn't be arsed to wash it. But as it was free and I even delivered it as I was passing the woman's street anyway I think her having to clean it if she wanted to use it indoors was a fair deal.

CatThiefKeith · 20/01/2015 17:54

I bought a pair of jeans on EBay that still had a snotty tissue in the pocket. Envy

TheCunnyFunt · 20/01/2015 17:58

I bought a pair of walking boots off ebay a while ago, described as being in used but good condition. They arrived, all 4 ends of the laces were broken and the boots and laces were caked in mud. I actually didn't realise the laces were patterned until I washed them! I left negative feedback and the seller asked me why I had done that, explained why and their answer was 'They're good boots, they'll last you years.' Confused

Discopanda · 20/01/2015 18:01

I bought a load of Thomas the Tank Engine toys off another mum on a selling site and a couple of them had squashed up chips on them! (they were all in a carrier bag) I washed them before giving them to my nephew.

Reddottys12 · 20/01/2015 18:15

Some of theae really made me laugh! The nerve of some people!

I bought a 2nd hand cot divider.
It was delivered by courier, well wrapped in cardboard, padded etc.
The padding was a filthy sheet full of mouse droppings.
When I pulled the cot divider apart, it was full of mouse droppings.
Like coffee cups FULL....
I cleaned it, cleaned it again, cleaned it again but still couldn't look at it so got rid to the tip.

boak.

sebsmummy1 · 20/01/2015 18:27

Totally agree. I find Facebook selling pages the worst for this. Dirty dirty bastards. I could never hand over a toy or accessory that was filthy unless I had said in the advert it needed cleaning and was priced accordingly.

merrychristmasyafilthyanimal · 20/01/2015 18:45

YANBU! I brought a second hand buggy and it was absolutely disgusting, it had mud all over the cosy toes and dog poo bags (no poop thank god!) in the pocket. I never let anything leave my house unless it is in a condition that I would be happy to receive.

I have also received baby clothes with shit stains on them, there are some really dirty bastards out there.

pasbeaucoupdegendarme · 20/01/2015 18:49

YANBU. I bought a baby bouncer recently and when I went to collect it I had to ask if the covers were washable as they clearly hadn't been washed! The lady assured me they were... After the faff I had working out how to get them off I assume she had just forgotten how to do it between having children so hadn't cleaned it after number two...

Homepride1 · 20/01/2015 18:51

Facebook selling pages amaze me!

Recent pic on ours was a grubby baby walker! The picture was awful the carpet in was on was filthy with fag buts! Walls dirty and worst of all was these skinny little dirty legs with the filthiest nappy I had ever seen Sad

The girl selling was asking £25 as she paid £35 for it and her bubz hardly used Shock

Bought a dress from Ebay just before Christmas. She'd obviously had a good time in it as it stank of cigs but she'd also left a crumpled up fiver in the pocket, so swings and roundabouts face

Eminybob · 20/01/2015 19:19

I also bought a baby walker from a fb site which was minging.
A good scrub with anti bac wipes (I use the floor ones for jobs like this) and it was as good as new, so I don't know why the seller couldn't have done this Hmm

Also my house was filthy when we moved in, I don't think the previous owner had cleaned it at all in the (several) months between us viewing it and moving in
And I thought it was black grout inbetween the cream floor tiles. It was not Sad.
The thing that gets me is that it actually wasn't a big job getting the grout white again, just a bit of bleach and some elbow grease, so I have no idea how she could have let it get that bad in the first place.

minionmadness · 20/01/2015 19:27

Some people are just plain nasty! And don't even care that they are Grin

FreeWee · 20/01/2015 20:05

Needs a wipe or Needs a wash, few stains which will come out

Do it yourself! If you think the stains will come out then wash it and sell it as clean!

People are minging. I got stung with a Happyland toy which was delivered in a tied carrier bag. Took me ages to clean the crevices and it was missing pieces. I was contacted by someone else he'd sold something to to ask what condition I'd found it. I was honest and she got him banned from the group.

jendot2 · 20/01/2015 22:38

I got a travel cot off fb and when I took it out when I got home it was minging! Even after a scrub with disinfectant it was un usable and has to go to the tip.... Lesson. Always look inside the bag!

Ijustworemytrenchcoat · 20/01/2015 22:52

Boak at the snotty tissue!

There was a brilliant thread about facebook selling pages not so long ago, inspired me to go look up my local pages. Very entertaining.

lanbro · 20/01/2015 22:54

People are disgusting, the only time my items aren't immaculate is when I offer them for free but they're still clean. I wouldn't let anything go that I wouldn't be happy to receive myself.

I bought a Phil and Teds double in filthy condition, but paid a price that reflected it. Jet washed it down, repainted the frame and sold it for double I paid after using it for nearly a year!

lanbro · 20/01/2015 22:56

On a tangent, my favourite fb selling pages ads go something like this.....Wanted: girls pram, must be immaculate, must deliver and must be cheap, only got £7.50. Icandy or bugaboo preferred.....
