FIL comes to stay every couple of months and this is a habit of his. I cook, I place the meal in front of everyone at the table and before we've all picked up our knives and forks he's shaking salt onto his food.

He hasn't tasted it, he doesn't know if the seasoning is to his taste or not, he just goes ahead and does it.

On Saturday I made everyone cheese and pepperoni omelettes for breakfast. As he went to pick up the salt I stopped him and said, 'you should try it first, pepperoni tends to be quite salty' so he tried it, and lo and behold he didn't want any.

He's wasted food before, declaring he couldn't eat anymore because it was a bit salty. After he'd shaken a load on before tasting it Angry

AIBU to find this really rude?

YABU He's visited you often, unless you're such a bad cook that it's going to be random how salty it is, he knows he'll need more to be to his taste.

So either you're a truly awful cook, or YABU to dictate. Why do you want your OP to not enjoy your food, or dictate how he's supposed to enjoy your food?

Aridane · 20/01/2015 11:42

Oh my goodness - how can posters get so passionate about this?

WorraLiberty · 20/01/2015 11:44

limited Shock

I wonder if she'll progress to Banksy style graffiti in the subways?

GentlyBenevolent · 20/01/2015 11:44

Some people are just incredibly uncomfortable with the idea that other people have different tastes to them.

NancyRaygun · 20/01/2015 11:45

Good grief limited I wonder if SHE added salt?

MarianneSolong · 20/01/2015 11:45

My mum complained to me that my brother's girlfriend salted her food before tasting it.

I think there are cultural differences between my mother and the girlfriend - and they are battling it out for first place in my brother's affections.

Oh now here's another contender for over thinker of the month

Oi! worra I thought that title was mine? You can't just go giving it away! I've already cleared a space in the downstairs loo for the trophy to sit.

chillybits · 20/01/2015 11:47

Aridane thankfully a good number of posters are very passionate about not being passionate about this!

NobodyLivesHere · 20/01/2015 11:47

I'm 35. In all those of eating food I have never found a plate of food salty enough. That is how I know I need more. I'm not uncomfortable with other people feeding me. I love being fed.

WorraLiberty · 20/01/2015 11:48

You're going to have to up your game I'm afraid or nobble the phone votes

My aunt used to sprinkle salt on my dad's food for him at the table.

It used to really annoy my mum, not so much because it was an insult to her cooking, but because she thought my aunt was being proprietorial.

She wasn't. She'd grown up doing it and he never objected. Apparently it was a common thing in their background for the women of the house to do this for their menfolk. My mum understood that but it still rankled.

He didn't expect my mum to perform such services. Just as well, really Grin

bobbyjoe · 20/01/2015 11:49

I do it as since having DC I don't season the food I cook, preferring to add salt after. Some things I never went back to salting when cooking as cooking for DC broke this habit - pasta, rice, potatoes, veg. I don't miss it but do add salt to other things, and possibly quite a lot.

Trinpy · 20/01/2015 11:50

I think it's rude if someone ruins a meal you've cooked for them and then refuses to eat it. It's rude to waste food that someone has cooked for you. If the food was too salty to begin with then he should know by now that the op cooks salty food so he should taste it before adding salt.

My Dh puts ketchup on everything, including weird things like macaroni cheese. It drives me crazy. I know I'm bu because it's his food to eat but I've put effort into making something different every night with decent ingredients that have their own taste and then he ruins it by making everything taste of ketchup Angry.

BeCool · 20/01/2015 11:50

to all those who think that salt doesn't go with sweet, you need to start reading the list of ingredients on any cake/biscuits you buy.

Also if you bake at home unless you use unsalted butter you are adding significant salt to the cake via the butter and often the recipe calls for salt too.

HelloItsStillMeFell · 20/01/2015 11:50

I love lots of salt but I do judge people who put it on food before they've tried it. It's a bit disrespectful to the cook. Unless it's just a fried egg or a pile of plain broccoli or something, that's fine, but to cover a whole meal that is already seasoned like a casserole or a lasagne or something before you've tried it is stupid. I would never judge someone for just wanting more salt than is already there though, that's totally up to them ONCE THEY'VE TASTED IT.

bobbyjoe · 20/01/2015 11:51

Saying that, if someone cooked for me I'd make a pretence of tasting first before adding salt as I'm aware it is rude. I'd still add salt though and lots of pepper.

That's the thing though Trinpy he hasn't ruined it for him.

windchime · 20/01/2015 11:52

My FIL does the very same thing. He goes for the salt without tasting anything, then cuts up his potatoes and liberally shakes salt over them again. His BP is through the roof and he is diabetic. I have always put it down to the fact that he is of limited intelligence and breeding.

chillybits · 20/01/2015 11:53

My DH does the ketchup thing too. Odd person that he is. But I wouldn't think of saying telling him I had already added a perfect blend of herbs and seasoning, because I don't care what he does with his portion. I DO tell him it will rot his teeth though.

WorraLiberty · 20/01/2015 11:53

Becool I think we're all aware that biscuits/contain salt.

However, we were asked why we don't add salt (at the table) to puddings/desserts.

HowCanIMissYouIfYouWontGoAway · 20/01/2015 11:54

that's, er, that's yes that's a very wrong way to hold a pen, Limited.

Ready salted crisps and milk chocolate in the same mouthful is amazing. Three crisps to one chocolate button is my ideal ratio.
