To practice driving on on own?

Fanfeckintastic · 19/01/2015 19:46

This is just a thought so I'm fully prepared to be told it's unreasonable.

I'm a learner driver in Ireland, I've done my 12 edt (essential driving training) lessons plus about ten practice ones with instructor and a few with my dad.

Would I be totally unreasonable to practice on my own at really quiet times like very early weekend mornings or very late evenings? I really feel I need practice more than anything else and it's just not always feasible to be accompanied by a fully licensed driver.

Did any of you practice on your own? A lot of my learner driver friends drive unaccompanied daily but it is illegal and I'm not usually a mad stickler for each and every rule, I just feel a bit differently about driving but I don't know how else I'll get the experience to pass my test.

It's illegal and if you have an accident your insurance will not cover you. Yabu

CaptainAnkles · 19/01/2015 19:47

I wouldn't risk it tbh. I'd get as much practise as possible whenever a licensed driver is available, but I wouldn't try going out on my own illegally.

NormaStanleyFletcher · 19/01/2015 19:47

Driving on your own May well void your insurance.

Please don't.

iwantgin · 19/01/2015 19:48

YABVVU

Don't do it. It's illegal and dangerous.

Ifyourawizardwhydouwearglasses · 19/01/2015 19:48

YAB massively U.

A man in Scotland was killed this week by a learner driver, leaving his heavily pregnant wife.

You need to be supervised for a reason. Your need to drive does not trump everyone else's need to be safe.

Pass you fucking test before you go out on your own.

FFS.

hotfuzzra · 19/01/2015 19:48

Yes, you would be totally fanfeckintastically unreasonable.

TheWitTank · 19/01/2015 19:48

YABU. Very. It's illegal and dangerous. You are very inexperienced and you cannot teach yourself to drive.

Bunbaker · 19/01/2015 19:48

In the UK it is illegal to drive on a public highway on your own if you don't hold a full driving licence. I am not familiar with the law in Ireland but I would advise you to check this out, because without a full driving licence you wouldn't be insured either.

storminabuttercup · 19/01/2015 19:49

Very unreasonable.

Ifyourawizardwhydouwearglasses · 19/01/2015 19:49

I mean, do people even need to ask this?? REALLY!?

PelvicFloorGoneSouth · 19/01/2015 19:49

You really need to ask! YABVU

londonrach · 19/01/2015 19:49

You can only legally practice on your own if on private land. If you on the road on your own you wouldnt be insured. You could also lose your provio. Imagine if you had an accident and killed someone!!!!!! Yabvvvvu

Pancakeflipper · 19/01/2015 19:49

I wouldn't. You know it's illegal. You get involved in any traffic incident and you will lose your license before you can even get it. Find a team of people who can sit with you in the car and make a rota for driving time.

Hobby2014 · 19/01/2015 19:49

This is my first YABU.
Because you really, really are.

Ifyourawizardwhydouwearglasses · 19/01/2015 19:49

In fact, you would not be unreasonable as such. More 'selfish idiot.'

ShitHotAwesome · 19/01/2015 19:49

I know how you feel as there used to be a much more lax attitude to this in Ireland - you used to be allowed drive on your own on your "second provisional", I think.

As others have said, it's illegal and if you had an accident, your insurance wouldn't cover you.
I did it in my time. Kind of scares me to think of it now but I am not living in Ireland anymore so am at a distance from everyone I knew having done it.

MatildaTheCat · 19/01/2015 19:50

Yeah, go for it.

Drive yourself straight to court and then you'll have no need to be worrying about your test anytime soon. Or a job in all likelihood.

PestoFrostissimos · 19/01/2015 19:50

How stupid

LittleBearPad · 19/01/2015 19:50

Completely unreasonable. You know this. Don't do it.

MaidOfStars · 19/01/2015 19:50

Any private land near by?

Andrewofgg · 19/01/2015 19:51

it's just not always feasible to be accompanied by a fully licensed driver

Then it's just not always feasible to practice.

I don't know the law in Ireland but in England you would be driving uninsured for which you can get six points - half way to being disqualified before you even get qualified.

So don't do it.

SauvignonBlanche · 19/01/2015 19:51

YWBVVVU!Angry Shock
You would be uninsured!

TheSortingCat · 19/01/2015 19:52

This is a terrible idea. Don't do it! So what if it takes you a little longer to learn?

Agree with a pp that your need to practice driving doesn't trump other people's need to be safe.

TeaAndALemonTart · 19/01/2015 19:53

Fuck it, why not? I mean, what's the worse that can happen?

RiverTam · 19/01/2015 19:53

unless you own the land you are planning to practice on, no, don't do it. Don't know the law in Ireland but here's it's illegal and would almost certainly void your insurance.
