started out with a resolution to change my diet from veggie to vegan and have lost 7lb in 2 weeks [still need to lose 1 stone for ideal weight]. dm thinks it's 'freaky' and that i'm not having 'proper' food, i've talked with her explained what i am eating is healthier than i have been doing [comfort food when the going gets a bit rough]. but i feel good and am happy with my changing shape. dm worries i'll get ill, am taking 1750 calories a day, but i'm not hungry on it, what can i say to stop her worrying ?

I think that's a lot of weight to lose so quickly, unless you were about 25 stone to begin with.
I don't think 1750 calories is enough to maintain a healthy body on.

Some of the answer will depend on what you are eating though, rather than just calorific intake.

squoosh · 18/01/2015 23:29

I think 1750 calories per day sounds fine. Tell her you've done your research and are getting all the required vitamins and nutrients. Some of the 7lb will have been water weight hence the large initial loss. This will slow down.

MrsGSR · 18/01/2015 23:31

YANBU, well done on your weight loss!

Some of it will probably be water weight, so don't be discouraged if it slows down. 1750 Calories is plenty whilst you're loosing weight (assuming you're female and not doing masses of exercise).

IME there isn't anything you can say to stop her worrying, might be best just to not discuss it with her!

mrsfuzzy · 18/01/2015 23:31

i'd become a bit of a choc fiend at times and before i went veggie 4 years ago it was take aways galore, but now i've gone vegan i eat a lot of fruit and veg, soya protein etc, i feel lighter and 'cleaner inside' if you see what i mean, dm eats like i used to, so 'i'm a bit concerned for her. the calorie thing isn't really counted as i eat more naturally i feel fuller for longer, but i understand what you are saying though.

Cross posted about water weight, and
*losing

mrsfuzzy · 18/01/2015 23:33

thanks mners, i'll talk with dm again about what you have said and it might help her understand, i know i won't put it back on with my new regime but i'd rather it be a bit steadier.!

1750 is more than enough to maintain a healthy body, as long as the food itself meets your nutritional needs.

Discopanda · 19/01/2015 01:06

As 70% of the world's population is lactose intolerant to some degree, switching to vegan and giving up dairy products would help you lose water weight straight away. As long as you're eating plenty of healthy fats and proteins and not filling up on junk food that happens to be vegan-friendly, you'll be perfectly healthy.

mrsfuzzy · 19/01/2015 10:47

discopanda, hi, yes, eating fruit and veg by the pound, soya protein, vegan spread etc i drink a lot of water so it's good that doesn't hang around so to speak, have cut back on sugar over xmas and don't look at any junky stuff even if it is vegan, surprising how different you can feel for cutting down on stuff like sugar for instance. not so good on the finances though will be having to buy smaller clothles before long ! heck, us women suffer for the cause.

That doesn't sound excessive to me, I'm currently doing WW and get 31 daily points + 49 weekly points which (if I split the weeklies to 7 per day) equates to 1520 cals per day. I've lost 6.5 pounds in two weeks and am eating well, am not hungry, I've got a way to go yet and I'm sure it will drop to between 1-2 pounds per week which I'm very happy with.

Well done :-)

Runningupthathill82 · 19/01/2015 16:15

1750 cals a day is more than enough, surely - as long as you're getting all the vital nutrients. And in a vegan diet chances are you are.
I aim for 1200 cals a day and am still struggling to lose weight on that...am rather envious!

Miiaaoow · 20/01/2015 00:41

YANBU. Well done on changing your life :)

7lbs in 2 weeks is good going. They recommend 2-3lbs a week, so it's only a tad over that. And I imagine you're losing a little more 'waste' (If you catch my drift ;P)

Do your research. And just listen to your body.

Check out deliciouslyella, ohsheglows and naturallymeghan for some great recipes!

Your mum is probably insecure about her diet and is projecting her issues on to you. Similar to the way people who drink alcohol like to argue with teetotallers. etc

Theboodythatrocked · 20/01/2015 00:48

Well done op. Lots of that will be water so it will slow down.

1750 is fine. I did 1500 on my diet and felt fantastic. It's for life though or it creeps back on.

Mums are programmed to worry about you. That's life so couid he a but harsh there miiaaooww Wink

Miiaaoow · 20/01/2015 01:02

Ooopsie. Grin Seems I'm projecting a bit myself because many members of my family eat terribly and criticise and mock my healthy diet on a regular basis.

My mum in particular likes to buy me junk food to tempt me back to the dark side. Drives me crazy.

DisgraceToTheYChromosome · 20/01/2015 08:16

Try being in a roomful of HGV drivers. Half will be lugging round enormous salads, while the other half will be mocking them. It's the second group who had to have a chair put on the stairs halfway up though. When I see one sitting on it, I ask them in my best "kindlly concern" voice, should I get the first aider to bring the office defib?

Jewels234 · 20/01/2015 10:11

Vegans live on average something like 12 years longer because their diets are so good. A friend who is vegan got told by her dad 'that Peaches Geldoff died from being a vegan'. People are massively uneducated about what their diets should look like. Congratulations on your weight loss!

MrsTawdry · 20/01/2015 10:16

YANBU. My DH is vegan and to hear some people's reaction is amazing. SO many people seem to take offense at his not eating any animal products.

His diet is excellent and balanced...people can't fathom it because the majority of people can't see beyond a meal comprised of meat and two veg.
Don't speak about it to her is my advice.

Theboodythatrocked · 20/01/2015 10:21

miiaaaoooww yep see your point and that would drive me mad too. Grin

1750 cals a day is a very reasonable amount to live on, not just diet on. I do 1200 cals when I diet (the least you should eat before your body goes into starvation).
7lbs in the first 2 weeks of dieting is very reasonable, weight loss is always quicker in the first couple of weeks as your body adjusts from a higher level to lower level of calories. 2lb a week max from now on would be great as it will come off slowly and not be just from dehydration etc. just make sure you're 1750 a day is spent on good food and not a chocolate bar then a crap load of veg for the rest of the day ;)
I imagine your DM is just a bit jealous, most people have a saboteur (mine are DM and DH) someone that either doesn't support or tries to get you to fall off the wagon.

NoImSpartacus · 20/01/2015 11:14

Soy is not healthy, it can cause health problems and its widespread use is destructive to the planet… don’t eat it! Google it, you will be shocked at how bad it is.

SocksRock · 20/01/2015 11:30

1750 is plenty! Your diet sounds lovely to me, would love to be vegan or close to, but have a DH who thinks it's not a meal unless it has meat in! I'm aiming for 1200 at the moment, plus I'm doing lots of exercise and eating the extra calories I'm "earning". I've lost 8lbs since Christmas, so yours is really good :-)

dragdownthemoon · 20/01/2015 12:33

Well done, you should be proud that sounds brilliant. You are def eating enough calories and sounds like you have changed to a healthier lifestyle. It's not like you have lost a stone in a week, 7lb in the first two weeks sounds a good and sensible loss x

specialsubject · 20/01/2015 13:50

too rapid a weight loss, unless you were very fat to start with this is not good. Make sure you eat enough. Pound a week is the recommended healthy loss rate.

vegans need B12 supplements (essential vitamin) but otherwise you can live quite healthily on an entirely vegetable-sourced diet, with effort, planning and care.

mrsfuzzy · 21/01/2015 00:11

some brilliant help, advice and support mnrs, you lovely bunch ! i showed dm your responses and i think she understands better now, but she still can't get her head round the fact i no longer eat cakes, sweets, crisps, chocolate and biccies ' but you love those fuzzy!' not any more i don't, as a result have lost 3lb more since i put the first post up, feeling well and very happy, everyone who is doing the weight loss bit keep going, it'lll be worth it, stay focused and stay happy ! best wishes, fuzzy.
