To change my gas fire to a open one?

Live in a 1920's house with a proper chimney. Currently a gas fire in there with an iron basket. We got a gas man in who said the gas was unsafe and sealed it up. Went to a fireplace shop and they quoted us £500 to replace just the gas mechanism and £1000 to put a log burner in.

Would I be unreasonable (and possibly set the house on fire) if I called a chimney sweep, made sure the chimney was safe. Get rid of the gas pipe and have a real basket fire with a guard?

We took out an ugly gas fire and installed a multi fuel burner when we moved into this house. Installed it in July and started using it in Oct.

DH loves it, feeds it like its a baby, is completely obsessed with it and thinks it's the best thing since sliced bread.

I hate it.

The dog is scared of the normal crackling and spitting sounds of the wood, so we have had to move to coal. I have to hoover and dust every single day to get all the coal dust/ash that pervades the room. I have to hoover the ceilings every few days because the dust gets onto cobwebs that I otherwise wouldn't notice. We've had 3 rugs so far because they have been burned or marked by coal/charcoal. The dust also got into the back of the sky box and we had to pay to replace it. I am now paranoid about the TV and BT box and DustBuster them daily.

I don't think it pushes out as much heat as my parents gas fire, and when it does it can overheat the room quite quickly - it's hard to get a happy medium.

Because we wanted carpet in the living room we had to cover up the floor vent, which means we always have a window open and I keep forgetting to close the bigger overnight = living room Baltic first thing in the morning.

It looks pretty and suits the decor. I can't wait till summer when the fucking thing becomes an expensive ornament again.

We've had open fires in all our houses, but in this one we recently installed, ourselves, a multifuel burner. Best thing ever!

We were quoted £2k to fit it, did it our selves for £600 and it's brilliant.

We have a multifuel stove. We burn mainly smokeless fuel with the odd log thrown on every now and again.

Best thing we ever bought Smile
