To be so shit scared of dentist tomorrow

saltedcaramelicious · 18/01/2015 17:19

It's only a check up ffs. But I'm dreading it. I HATE going to the dentist. And I have a feeling I need a filling in another wisdom tooth as noticed a black line in the grooves Sad
Appt is at 8:30am and it's been hanging over me all weekend Sad

Need an un-mumsnetty handhold even though I know IABU in being scared of something so straightforward Blush

I'm exactly the same, salted. I've been in pain since before Christmas (manageable with painkillers) and I've finally plucked up courage to go on Tuesday. I'm also pretty sure it's wisdom tooth related. Good luck tomorrow. I'll hold your hand if you'll hold mine! Oh, and YANBU.

Fluffyears · 18/01/2015 17:25

Remember this is for your good. I have to get two wisdom teeth surgically removed so if you are crapping yourself think how I feel. I know it'll be awful but keep telling myself I'll no longer have pain. Stay strong.

Redhead11 · 18/01/2015 17:25

Not at all. i've been dental phobic all my life and have been in some terrible states before going to the dentist. Hand holding all the way, as i have to go and have preparation work done for a crown on Tuesday.

saltedcaramelicious · 18/01/2015 17:25

Thankyou morning. Glad I'm not the only one. Thankfully I'm not in pain, I hope yours is easily sorted out Flowers

Yanbu. But you know it will be less awful than you imagine. I speak as someone who recently plucked up courage to go and have the root canal I'd been putting off for 2 years. Grin Grin

HalfPintPortia · 18/01/2015 18:05

I had two fillings last week after not seeing a dentist for 18 years. I felt that if I could do that I could take on anything! I will offer my hand to you. Squeeze it tight!

Silvercatowner · 18/01/2015 18:08

I've had impacted teeth extracted under GA and to be honest, I preferred that to having my teeth cleaned. I'm going to tell my dentist I need to be numbed next time. I'm fairly sure I have a high pain threshold (childbirth with no anaesthesia) but I cannot tolerate teeth cleaning.

DrankSangriaInThePark · 18/01/2015 18:11

Silver I agree! The root canal was much less painful than cleaning!

BeeRayKay · 18/01/2015 18:14

The doctor will prescribe you diazepam for this exact reason. I get it, even just for check ups.

I also find listening to music in my headphones helps.

MrsMonkeyBear · 18/01/2015 18:16

I'm at the dentist tomorrow too. shitting myself. As a kid I loved the dentist but once I had moved away from home, money was stupidly spent elsewhere. Now I dread going, luckily my dentist is excellent and specifically deals with nervous patients. I need lots of work done due to not going for so long. Last week it was 4 fillings on lower right, tomorrow it's 5 on upper right.

It's been a vicious circle, to scared to go has ended up with needing twice the amount of work needing doing.

If you can take a friend. If not an iPod that you can use to distract yourself whilst dentist does his thing. Get him to talk through everything he does. And most importantly BREATH

Sending hugs and sympathy

BeeRayKay · 18/01/2015 18:16

yep, also hate the teeth cleaning!

and you can ask for a cream to numb your gum before they inject Amy local anaesthesia.

can you tell I have a phoboia of the dentist?

saltedcaramelicious · 18/01/2015 18:17

Thank you everyone.

It's not even the pain I am bothered about, nor needles. For me it's the lack of control. If I could have half an hour of labour contractions with no pain relief, instead of getting a filling, I so would! Shock

saltedcaramelicious · 18/01/2015 18:20

beeraykay I think if I am told tomorrow I need to go back for a filling, I am going to get emerg appt at the docs for diazepam to take before that appt, sod it!

My cousin is so scared of the dentist she has to have a GA even for a simple filling.

emotionsecho · 18/01/2015 19:03

You are not alone salted, I used to be fine about going to the dentist when I was a child, but now I hate and dread it.

My mouth is small and I can't abide the way they stuff all those things in it, one of these days I am actually going to vomit on someone. Secondly, my teeth and gums are ultra sensitive, I do have a high pain threshold with anything other than my teeth.

I'll grip your hand for you.

saltedcaramelicious · 18/01/2015 20:01

Emotion, yes yes, hate all the things they stuff in there, I too feel like I am going to throw up one of these times. Urgh just want it over now

WhineWhineWINE · 18/01/2015 20:34

Think of it this way, even if you do need a filling it will be a breeze compared to the abscess you might get if you don't go. Holy crap, they hurt!

KarinMurphy · 18/01/2015 20:58

Much sympathy from me. My tooth fell in half and is now hurting like hell. I've got an appointment on Tuesday to get it looked at and I'm panicking already. I've not been for at least 15 years but it might be longer. I hope they are nice and used to people crying and shaking. That's probably all in a days work for dentists. Grin

kwerty · 18/01/2015 21:06

Another phobic here; I have to have appts first thing in the morning otherwise I get so afraid I ring and cancel. My dentist has a numbing spray which he uses esp when working towards the back of the mouth, to avoid that retching feeling :(
Last time I was in tears having x-rays done. Technician was stuffing xray plates wrapped in some sort of film right back in my mouth. Don't know who was in a worse state by the end!
When I get treatment, I feel really stupid afterwards cos it is rarely as bad as I anticipate. Holding your hand..

kwerty · 18/01/2015 21:11

I do think that those of us who are of an age to have had numerous huge unnecessary fillings done with no anaesthetic at the school dentist are almost bound to have some sort of hang up about dentists!

iwanttogotothechaletschool · 18/01/2015 21:13

I used to be terrified of the dentist, hadn't been for years even though I needed work done. I had hypnotherapy for it and I am now completely chilled out. I have had two root canals and a crown done and it didn't bother me in the slightest. Before the hypnotherapy even the thought of a check up had me in a state.

windchime · 18/01/2015 21:17

YANBU. I haven't been for 9 years and my teeth are in a terrible state. I had a bad experience after having tons of painful work done with no problem. Put me off for life. I have broken teeth, loose bridgework, and wobbly fillings so I am not sure where the poor dentist would start tbh. Good luck, OP. You may inspire me yet.

CheekyWeeGandT · 18/01/2015 21:21

Another phobic here. I've had some great dentists whom I trusted and, therefore, was scared rather than terrified. But moved cities a couple of times and got really really unlucky and had a few awful dentists who made a mess of work and gave insufficient anaesthesia. I've found a new one who offers sedation and it was magic ....so chilled out and relaxed and no memory of it all. Even returned home for a lovely three hour nap afterwards - fab!

morningtoncrescent62 · 19/01/2015 11:05

How did it go, salted? I thought of you at the appointed time. My own date with hell dental appointment is tomorrow at 10.45, and I'm one of the 'haven't been for years so goodness knows how much I'll have to have done' brigade - I thought it was just me! I loathe both the out of control feeling, but also the sensation of someone fiddling around in my mouth. Cheeky, I didn't know sedation was an option. Will an ordinary dentist do that, or do you have to go to hospital for it?

emotionsecho · 19/01/2015 11:45

salted hope you're ok, and felt the virtual hand grippingGrin.
