to want to return this furniture after a year?

I bought a wardrobe and chest of drawers from sainsburys and they are awful. When they arrived the doors were chipped (got them replaced) and 12 months on the are just unusable! They are falling apart, wont take the weight of clothes (bottom falls out) all the runners are broke. You pull a drawer out and it collapses down onto the one underneath.

AIBU to think furniture should have a longer life expectancy than 12 months? Would you expect to have to replace chest of drawers after that time? I know I've probably got no chance but it is annoying.

I know folk will say it's "principle", but what did you pay?

greenfolder · 17/01/2015 18:55

it will cost you nothing at all to complain.

furniture should last a reasonable length of time. I still have some cheap furniture (chest of drawers) that was bought from Argos at least 10 years ago and are still functional.

Complain.

It was £350 to buy but they were doing £100 off a 350 spend code so came to £250.

Did you put it together yourself?

msrisotto · 17/01/2015 18:58

Go for it, I have returned things under the sale of goods act after a several years.

lornathewizzard · 17/01/2015 19:00

They might well have a warranty over a year so you should get in touch. Possibly only for repair rather than return.

EamesIsMyHomeboy · 17/01/2015 19:05

We put them together yes but DH is an absolute whizz at flat pack so I have no doubt it is the quality of the product rather than anything to do with putting them together poorly as every other thing he has built has stood for years.

For £250 I'd definitely complain. Not fit for purpose.

fascicle · 17/01/2015 19:27

You would have grounds, given the 'reasonable length of time' and 'fit for purpose' criteria in the Sale of Goods Act (I would expect furniture to last at least 5-10 years). The 'remedy' at this stage - a year after purchase - would usually be repair or replacement. However, that doesn't stop you asking for a refund, although they might well argue that you have had use out of the items for a year and make an offer accordingly. Good luck and be prepared to be persistent.

Get your 'whizz' at flat pack DH to take them apart and re do them using wood glue

EamesIsMyHomeboy · 17/01/2015 19:49

26 all the metal runners have snapped.

simple - its not fit for purpose, you should reasonably expect it to last more than 12 months....

TruJay · 17/01/2015 21:52

I would complain, we got our bed from Sainsbury's on that deal, its fantastic but if it wasn't we would definitely complain. Our Ikea wardrobe, bought a year ago, has warped horribly so I am going to complain about that and hope to get it replaced, well see.
