To go to the cinema on my own?

Keepswimming123 · 17/01/2015 18:41

To go to the cinema on my own? Nothing else on that I want to see, woman in black 2 is on at 10.20... Had a really crap couple of days, including a break up, and want to get out of the house. All my friends are busy, as this is last minute.com

A) will it scare the shit out of me?
B) will I be judged by other cinema goers??

No idea about the film but I love going to the cinema alone! Have fun!

misskatamari · 17/01/2015 19:04

Have fun! I love going to the cinema and never mind going alone. Although woman in black would freak me out waaaay too much to go alone! I'm still scared after the first one!

Keepswimming123 · 17/01/2015 19:08

Clearly I am hardcore!!! Just having a nice glass of wine and takeaway to get me in the mood. Oh god, I am going to get scared shitless aren't I??

I want to go and watch 'wild' (reece witherspoon) on my own.

Keepswimming123 · 17/01/2015 19:17

Tiredemma, fancy joining me?!

Have fun.

Cupcakes123 · 17/01/2015 19:25

Oohhh I would love to go to the cinema on my own. No kids, no popcorn hogging DP just me and the sweet popcorn and M&M's in the brown bag!
I hope it's not too scary, first one freaked me out for ages Confused
Enjoy!

I went to see Paddington on my own last week. Blubbed my eyes out, which I probably wouldn't have done if anyone else had been with me. Woman in Black wouldn't be my choice so I can't comment on your choice of film, but there's nothing wrong with going on your own. Other cinema-goers really aren't interested in you - the first few times I went by myself I did wonder whether they were judging me but I soon realised they most probably weren't, and even if they were, I didn't care.

ephemeralfairy · 17/01/2015 19:36

I bloody love going to things on my own. Cinema, theatre, exhibitions. I used to go regularly to gigs on my own too. Have a great time!

apostropheuse · 17/01/2015 19:44

Of course you can go on your own! Nobody bats an eyelid about this nowadays.

I go on my own to the theatre, the cinema and restaurants etc. I also go on holiday alone as often as I can (three to four times per year). it's very liberating when you realise you don't need to depend on anyone to create your own entertainment/enjoyment.

I do go on holiday and outings with my children and grandchildren too, but I love the ME times. :-)

Thank you all, you have inspired me to be brave. I shall be venturing forth, although whether I shall come back after my film of choice feeling the same remains to be seen!!!

DH and I sometimes go to separate films at the same time when we can't agree on what to see. No one minds people going to the cinema on their own as it only becomes social when you're talking about it afterwards. You can't/shouldn't chat in the cinema.

EvilTwins · 17/01/2015 19:58

I went to see Into The Woods on my own. It felt very indulgent. I ate ice cream and didn't miss any of the film because a small person needed a wee Smile

2rebecca · 17/01/2015 20:10

I've been going to the cinema alone if no-one else fancied what I wanted to see since I was 18. It's not a big deal. Once you're in there it's dark and you can't chat to anyone anyway.

INeedSomeHelp · 17/01/2015 20:20

I am just home after going to see Into the Woods on my own. I love going to the cinema by myself. Your choice of film, no-one asking you questions about what's going on or who that actor is, no-one to comment if you cry.
Once the film starts no-one else is paying any attention to you anyway.

Keepswimming123 · 17/01/2015 20:42

Argh now I really want to go see into the woods!!!

squoosh · 17/01/2015 20:45

I can't believe the amount of MN threads about women going to the cinema solo.

KIrsty7318 · 17/01/2015 20:47

I saw it and wasn't impressed. Woman playing the lead was so botoxed up she never looked more than mildly perplexed' and by the end of the film her dress must have been mingling.

JockTamsonsBairns · 17/01/2015 21:00

I've been going to the cinema on my own for years, as have plenty of people I know. Can't believe this is even worth a mention Confused

Keepswimming123 · 17/01/2015 21:01

I know squoosh, it's a travesty. I take it you have been on countless solo ventures to the cinema? Kirsty, was that into the woods? Or woman in black??

OP posts:
squoosh · 17/01/2015 21:03

Calm down. I'm genuinely surprised with the frequency this pops up. It would never have occurred to me that someone would be seen as odd for going to the cinema by themselves.

Keepswimming123 · 17/01/2015 21:18

Ok sorry. Feeling a bit sorry for myself this eve due to a crap week and a break up. And everyone else is busy as it's short notice. Just wanted to see what other people thought. I stand corrected as now I see that it is a perfectly normal thing to do. Apologies.

OP posts:
Botanicbaby · 17/01/2015 21:22

aw OP no need to apologise to anyone, you can ask any question you want and of course you are feeling a bit tender due to the week you've had what with a break up and all.

fwiw i have been to the cinema on my own before and I loved it but I really felt I had to pluck up the courage to do so. just had no-one free on the day I was free to go so thought sod it. I would never judge someone for being anywhere on their own, it says a lot more about the person judging them than for whatever reason you have gone solo to something. hope you enjoy the film.

Keepswimming123 · 17/01/2015 21:39

Thank you x

Woman in Black, although if Into The Woods is one with Meryl Stereo I have held a grudge against her since that Abba thing.
