We used to keep ours in the loo but as we moved we now keep it in the upstairs hall (it is a cover box) there is a stairgate so the kids aren't upstairs by themselves

fluffyraggies · 17/01/2015 19:36

Downstairs loo with a stair-gate across it. (Loo door swings inwards so it doesn't clash with the stair-gate, IYSWIM) The cats can and do jump over the gate. Their food is in there too (big room).

You can buy a child gate with a cat flap in it, but ours can do the jump.

Oh and i second a covered tray. Just so much nicer all round. I bought an extra deep base one, as one of my fluffys is a dedicated digger and litter flicker.

I had to take the flap off the entrance as neither cat would push through. No probs then.

One in the kitchen and one in the bathroom although that one is largely unused as they both wee either in the toilet or the bath.

Hoping to eradicate them completely in the summer when we can get a cat flap - litter trays are absolutely minging.

Brummiegirl15 · 17/01/2015 19:47

We have two as have a really frail elderly cat. One in utility room and one in main bathroom.

It's just me and DP so we use en-suite so neither tray bothers us

WhoKnowsWhereTheTimeGoes · 17/01/2015 19:48

In the under stairs cupboard with the door ajar. GMF - I saw the cat flap suggestion on another thread and have been considering it so we can keep the door shut, but it will be pitch black in there then, does yours have any light in there?

SoleSource · 17/01/2015 19:50

Inside my cooker, leave cooker door open.

JennyBlueWren · 17/01/2015 20:01

Ours is in the cupboard under the stairs. Baby not here yet but the plan is to put a stairgate across it. Not sure if the cats would accept it being more enclosed (e.g. door closed with a cat flap).

JennyBlueWren · 17/01/2015 20:04

One reason we can't use the enclosed ones is that they need to be alert for where the other cat is e.g. lying in wait for them to come out or trapping them in there when playfighting.

NeedABumChange · 17/01/2015 20:10

Do you need one? I never really understand why people have little trays, you must all have lazy cats! Mine go in the garden or the fields around the house. Only need littler tray if they need to be kept in for some reason. In that case we have a covered one and it goes behind the sofa, emptied three times a day or poo scooped straight away if we see.

NeedABumChange · 17/01/2015 20:12

whoknowswherethetimegoes cats have good night vision and use other senses they don't need lights on.

youbethemummylion · 17/01/2015 20:14

On top of the freezer as I have a dog that likes to eat cat poo!

weeblueberry · 17/01/2015 20:15

NeedABumChange what about indoors cats?

When ours were indoor we had it in our bedroom. Was NOT ideal but our house is tiny and it was the only place I felt it could go. No room in our bathroom not enough enough room for a wastebin and they wouldn't have it in the back porch because it was too cold. Bloody creatures...

WhoKnowsWhereTheTimeGoes · 17/01/2015 20:18

I knew about the good night vision but wasn't sure about it being completely pitch dark.

As for why we have litter trays, we don't have a very big garden and don't want it full of cat shit, neither do our neighbours so litter trays it is.

muffinino82 · 17/01/2015 21:03

I have 2 mostly indoor cats, both rescues - one was 11 months when we got her and had never been outside and is a bit thick so doesn't seen to know one can poop outside Grin The other was a stray who had a very hard life and is now too grand to go outside! We have one in the hall at the bottom of the stairs which is a covered one. It's fab as you only have to roll it and all the muck goes in to a drawer at the side. Thick cat doesn't use it as she doesn't understand it but the former stray loves it as she feels more secure in there. The other is an open but high sided one that the thick one uses. It's in the back bedroom, a room that is more library than bedroom
