Aibu to want to move out ASAP (rats). And if not, how can I do it?

We moved in to a rented house in September. It is a Victorian terrace, with lots of books and crannies and draft holes.

A few months ago, I think in November, we realised that something had been in the kitchen trying to get in our bin, which we reported to the landlord. But it stopped after a few days. We later saw a rat outside. Then, a few weeks ago, we discovered that it had got into a food cupboard and eaten flour, porridge etc. the ll has employed a pest control man who has laid poison.

However, since then rat droppings have appeared in all rooms in the house except our bedroom (but have found outside in landing and in spare room, which baby is due to move in to soon). And on kitchen counters. My husband had to chase a rat out of the living room one afternoon too.

Now I am freaking out and want to leave. We have a 7 month old baby who likes to roll around on the floor and put everything in her mouth and I'm worried about her coming into contact with nasty rat germs. I am cleaning like mad, vacuuming 4 times a day and searching for droppings constantly. I'm waking up in the night, convinced there are rats in the bedroom and too scared to sleep.

So, should we wait it out, hoping the poison works, or should we leave ASAP so as not to put the baby in danger?

And would this be a reason to end tenancy early? Could I report to environmental health as unfit to live in? We have paid 6 months' rent in advance, so how could I get the remaining rent and deposit back? We have a 6 month break clause but that would mean staying for 2 more months.

What should I do, please help as I am becoming more hysterical by the minute!

You know, if you have rats running around, brazenly, INSIDE YOUR HOUSE, in the middle of the day, it's a serious problem and a major hazard. Don't let the landlord bullshit you that it's a minor thing. It isn't.

Not only are rats nocturnal (although some people will say that rats stumbling around in daylight have been poisoned and are dying) they tend to mainly stay in lofts and cavity walls. Not merrily wandering around your kitchen in daytime.

Hope you can now sever your contract.

Omg I hate rats. We've had mice in our house under the floor boards that would come up at night, not heard them this year till one popped up in the day time and my cat got it funny story. Can I recommend a ferret? We will be getting two in spring going to house them in the garden but will come in the house for a play. I'm sure a ferret would get rid of them much quicker than a cat. You should be able to place an add somewhere and someone will come round with a working one.

I can tell you from our current experience that once the poison does work, they often die under the floorboards and the house then stinks for several weeks as indeed ours does at the moment.Fortunately for us,our rats are between the floorboards and there has been no evidence of them making it through into a room yet but the noise at night is horrible with scrabbling and gnawing above our heads.

If you do get a cat, you can't have poison...

You can get a bait box. The rats can get in to reach the poison but other animals can't.

just because there are rats UNLESS environmental health deem the property as inhabitable, but I can't see that happening because of a rodent infestation .

Shock

my jaw fell open at this post...

Not sure how bad things can be, than the most disease carrying rodent, we have - infested in a house!

We have them in garden and thats bad enough, Jesus, I would be playing merry fucking hell with agents, landlords and EH!

Rats running riot and a baby!

WillBeatJanuaryBlues · 16/01/2015 21:26

I suspected that it wouldn't be a reason to end the tenancy early without incurring a penalty

hold on.....your asking a bunch of MN who whilst are brilliant, we are not experts, it sounds like your house is really really bad, you need evidence....photos...lots of them....I cannot imagine its legal to make money out of people living in a house with such an awful infestation.

I havent read all responses, so sorry if i repeat anything. We had rat and mouse infestation, i don't know if its true but i have read that mice are much more dangerous to health than rats, in part because rats tend to wee in one place, mice wee anywhere they like and wee of both rodents is not particularly friendly to human health.
We had rentokil and to be honest they were rubbish, in the end we found someone through word of mouth, and within two visits mice and rats exterminated, he now comes out every three months, and no problems. We now only give meal worms to the birds as bird feed is very good at attracting rodents. We also did massive replastering work to stop the little critters coming in through small gaps (if you can poke a barrow nib through a whole mice will be able to get in, rats can also squeeze through narrow gaps too)
Hope you get it sorted OP.
