....to ask if anyone else has had a "lost" Mirena?

So. I went to the GP to get my Mirena removed and she said she couldn't find the strings.

Half an hour of rummaging later, with increasingly grim and uncomfortable bits of equipment, there's still no sign. Gp is certain it's still in there - I haven't seen it come out and my periods haven't 're-started - but she thinks it has "migrated." So next step is a scan, to find it.

I'm very concerned to say the least. Where the fuck is it? Why did I have no idea this could happen? How will it ever come out? And is this normal?!

Any experiences from others would be much appreciated. I may be overreacting, but I'm worried there could be potential permanent problems and perhaps a lesser chance of conceiving DC2.

Thanks in advance.

Thanks Summers - can you remember roughly how long it took for the referral?

And have you had any DC since? Sorry for the barrage of questions, but it does help to know others have been there.

Running, phone your local gum. I went through ten weeks of hell, utter agony, loads of scans and rummaging before it was eventually removed under GA, laparoscopically, from my bowel.

Don't let them fob you off.

I would get another appointment with your gp and explain new symptoms and see if you can get a Scan appointment more urgently. You really need a scan to check position but they are unlikely to do that out of hours as prob not seen as emergency. It is generally only sonographers do internal scans and they dont work out of hours. Some Drs on gynae units do scan but would only if they were v worried. Obviously go to gynae unit if pain gets worse tonight. Is there a number you can call them for advice

After having mine fitted in Dec I was having lots of pains but thought it was just settling in. No bleeding as am still breastfeeding but really uncomfortable. Went to ask doc to take it out on Monday as just felt something wasn't right and she couldn't find the strings. I went for an ultrasound which showed it wasn't in my womb, then an X-ray which showed it in my pelvis. I was rushed into surgery straight away and they removed it from behind my bowel by my hip so could have been really nasty if had gone into my bowel. Luckily it was straightforward surgery to remove it and they think it perforated my womb on instertion. Trust your instincts if something doesn't feel right!!

I'd mine removed under GA ,
day case in hospital after GP and gynae couldn't locate the strings . So glad it's out . He needed a camera to find it as the device couldn't be seen or felt . Turns out it was tucked in away up at the back . The X-ray I had in the weeks before removal showed it to be sitting where it should be . Just goes to show that it does move around even tho u can't feel it . And my coil was in for 8 years ! Surely it'd b stuck in 1 place after all that time but nope .

I had a referral done in March (to gynae) as my strings couldn't be found to remove it (had it 5 years). The strings have been awol for years and I had an ultrasound and xray to check it was still there (it was).

I got an appointment for 24 may but it didn't suit so had to phone to decline it and ask for a new appointment. Phoned today as still hadn't had new one through and was told it's for 23rd June instead. So that's taken 3 months from referral to appointment.

Have to take the mini pill too as mirena lasts 5 years and mine is over that now.

I lost a regular coil. Xray etc. No sign. 2nd coil also decided it might like to go for a wander but was found leaving the premises. Current ones been in 3 years. All fine.
