I work for a hotel as a housekeeper.
As well as the standard rooms there is an option is to pay an extra fee on top of the room rate for an upgraded room, where they get a few extras like bathrobes, slippers,a range of complimentary drinks and what not.
Today whilst cleaning a room, I went to throw what I thought was an empty soft drink can away and noticed the can was un-opened, since whoever had paid for it didn't want it I opened it, had a drink and put it on my trolley.
A while later one of the managers came up to check my sheet, and asked where the can had come from, I told her it was what a guest had left in their room and she started going on about gross misconduct! And how it would affect her budget, for 1. I offered to pay for it but she refused, It had already been paid for in the room rate so if any thing they were making a profit on it,
And 2. It was a can of pop! I don't see it being any different to when the other ladies make themselves a cup of tea in their rooms using tea, milk etc that's been left there.
Any how that was this morning, so I went down for lunch and everything was fine.
Started back to work and had a conversation with said manager and another housekeeper about the pop, everything was light hearted, and the other housekeeper mentioned that she'd done the same thing herself before.
So it gets to 15 minuets before I'm due to clock out and the manager appers saying she needs to send me home as she's spoke to the head manager and they're suspending me till further notice.
I'm shocked to be honest, it was a can of pop for gods sake, it says on the letter that I was steeling supply's and why did they allow me to work for a further 3 hours before they sent me home?
So now I'm sat worrying that I'm going to lose my job over drinking a can of pop!

Bonkers and way too heavy handed! I am so sorry. :( that's beyond crap.

BitOutOfPractice · 15/01/2015 18:12

Oh no! Sad

That is utterly utterly ridiculous

Can you appeal?

I'm so sorry Thanks

BitOutOfPractice · 15/01/2015 18:13

I'm waiting for some of the sanctimonious arses earlier on the thread to come back and tell you that you deserved it now.

Idefix · 15/01/2015 18:20

Totally pants! Really hope that you find another job soon. Maybe try writing the the head of the hotel, if it is part of a chain and appeal this decision.

Coyoacan · 15/01/2015 18:20

Unbelievable, OP.

Sometimes these setbacks led us on to bigger and better things, I really hope that is the case for you.

Stealthpolarbear · 15/01/2015 18:21

Oh that is awful

Jessiepops · 15/01/2015 18:27

Thanks all :)
They've said they won't give me a bad reference, and the manager apologised to me and said they were just dealing with it from a company point of view and it was against company policy.
It's been a hard lesson to learn, I am genuinely sorry and it's opened my eyes to what is right and wrong.
The manager hasn't reported the other cleaner (or at least I don't think she has as it wasn't brought up and I didn't want to drop anybody else in It so didn't mention her)
I did mention the fact that others have tea/coffee from the sachets and tea bags in the room, but apparently this is acceptable.
Fortunately I'm still in touch with housekeepers at the previous hotel I worked for (Facebook does have it's benefits) and I noticed they're advertising for staff so got in touch with them.
The manager tried to call me earlier but I've changed numbers since I've worked there.
She's passed a message on for me to call her back.
She was out of the office when I called but I've left my new number and they did she will call me back.
Fingers crossed

Oh I hope this leads on to something bigger ad better OP. I am just open mouthed with disbelief at hos stupid this is, I really am

GallicIsCharlie · 15/01/2015 18:30

Oh, Jessie, I am so sorry. You've been made an example :(

I didn't want to tell this story before, but I once got the sack from a bar for something that was approved by all the other managers I'd worked for - but I hadn't explicitly asked permission from this one. He didn't like me, he fired me for it, and he was in the right.

However, I explained the whole thing (including why I knew I'd done wrong) to later employers and it was fine. I made sure to ask for clarification of their policy on this matter (!) and also encouraged them to seek feedback from him on my performance, as he couldn't fault me apart from my Mistake.

Good luck, sweetheart.

GallicIsCharlie · 15/01/2015 18:30

They've said they won't give me a bad reference

Cross-posted! Thank goodness! Flowers

thewomaninwhite · 15/01/2015 18:35

Great news about the reference, I did wonder about that. I agree that you have been made an example of. What a PITA. I hope that all works out with the new/old employer.

FightOrFlight · 15/01/2015 18:36

Sorry to hear this Jessie though I did suspect this would be the case due to the way they went straight to formal procedures.

I hope things work out re: former employers and that you are back in work soon.

slithytove · 15/01/2015 18:38

Too heavy handed.

Hope something comes along soon. Will they let you resign as your reason for leaving?

diddl · 15/01/2015 18:41

I hope you get sorted out with a new job OP.

I agree that you seem to have been made an example.

Tbh I would have they were on a bit of a sticky wicket saying that it's OK to use some stuff but not others.

Unless it's clearly pointed out.

pleaseclosethedoor · 15/01/2015 18:43

So sorry to hear this. Can't believe some of the responses earlier in the thread. Yes, technically what you did was wrong and I do see why they had to do something to show they're enforcing the policy. But I think a written warning would have been enough. This is frankly ridiculous!

Good luck for your job search, hope you get something else v v soon Flowers

youarekiddingme · 15/01/2015 18:44

Sorry to hear this. Seems like a massive - make a point/example of you - over a minor issue. I think they could have handled it better. Especially when tea/coffee is allowed.

IsabeauMichelle · 15/01/2015 18:52

Don't they have to follow some sort of procedure? I thought you had to have a couple of warnings before you could be fired?

It sounds to me like they were looking for an excuse to sack you tbh. Was your record good up until now?

Sorry this has happened.

Bogeyface · 15/01/2015 18:56

Not with gross misconduct isa, it will say in the contract what they consider GM to be and that they can sack you on the spot for it.

Stealthpolarbear · 15/01/2015 18:56

addition for something you were about to throw out!

Stealthpolarbear · 15/01/2015 18:58

us as lowery has said they don't need any reason to get rid this soon
Although CAN they cut ally sack her, with all it's negative ramifications?

ilovesooty · 15/01/2015 18:59

I do hope no one is vile enough to come back and say you deserved it.

I do hope you get something else quickly but my offer of a CV review is meant really sincerely if you need it.

FishWithABicycle · 15/01/2015 19:07

Sorry to hear you've lost your job over this. You understood your mistake and apologised - I think a written warning and a period of supervised probation would have been mire appropriate - but I guess sacking one staff member and making sure everyone knows will help get all the rest to stop any petty pilfering they might be doing and reduce their costs so I can see their point. Glad you're in with a chance of getting a different job asap though.

bbcessex · 15/01/2015 19:07

I'm really sorry to hear that OP. I think you've handled this situation brilliantly; what an absolute shock. Good luck with getting a new position; it sounds like something may come up soon for you xxxx

Fairenuff · 15/01/2015 19:18

So sorry that it came to this OP. It seems like you got caught up in something that could have happened to anyone and, as you say, it's a lesson learned. Hopefully you will find another post really quickly. Fingers crossed for you.

SorchaN · 15/01/2015 19:20

Really sorry to hear this - it does seem rather unfair. I hope you find a new job very soon.
