biscuits with tea and coffee

AIBU to keep no biscuits, cakes, muffins, chocolates etc to offer with tea /coffee when friends pop in for a chat?
spur of moment or arranged makes no difference as I have decided to stop buying them.
I'm on a diet so it's easier for me to not get tempted during the day.

so far nobody I recognise wrote an AIBU about sweet treats deprivation, so it's probably ok, but I don't know if it is ok or people are just being polite (or on a diet too) when they have to face the harsh reality of unaccompanied beverages

AIBU to stop biscuit dunking?

If I have invited a group of friends round I will usually bake, but if someone just pops in I wouldn't have anything to offer. MIL, on the other hand, thinks it is very inhospitable not to offer biscuits to anyone who pops in to see her and she keeps loads of rubbish biscuits/cakes in case anyone comes round.

BathshebaDarkstone · 13/01/2015 22:46

I don't usually have biscuits in the house, bought 2 packets yesterday for a quick carb fix. Blush

threepiecesuite · 13/01/2015 22:48

This is not the thread for me. I always have a bulging barrel.
Love a hob nob with tea or coffee. Or Malted Milk. Or a Viennese Whirl. Brew

wickedlazy · 13/01/2015 22:52

As long as you offer tea/coffee it's fine. If they look at you expectantly waiting to be be offered one, just explain "sorry have no biscuits in, I'm trying to slim and can't resist them if there in the house".

Are there any biscuits you don't like/wouldn't be tempted by, that you could keep in the house to offer out?

ZingTheGreat · 13/01/2015 22:55

wicked

i don't think soGrin

I have a group of friends who meet for coffee at each others houses weekly, we always bake or offer biscuits. However I never eat them normally.

MadeMan · 13/01/2015 23:00

"I always have a bulging barrel."

I have never been able to find a decent biscuit barrel that stops biscuits going soft. Sad I usually make do with a Victoria biscuit tin, but it doesn't look quite as nice as a barrel.

fascicle · 14/01/2015 15:57

FinallyHere Similar experience. We once had some builders who eventually asked me to stop providing biscuits (very nice ones they were too) with their tea. Not good for their figures, they said. Grin

SquirrelSwarm · 14/01/2015 16:13

I never offer people biscuits if they pop in for a chat.

Kelly1814 · 14/01/2015 16:18

YANBU. this is why the nation is fat.

Jux · 14/01/2015 16:56

I drink tea from dawn to dusk so if biscuits were compulsory I'd never stop eating them.

If I wanted a biscuit I'd have one. Usually only have them with tea when dd gets home from school and then only rarely.

I don't notice whether I'm generally offered biscuits if I have tea at someone else's house, I think generally not. Once in a blue moon I might be offered cake. Don't care either way. I'm there to see my friend, whether in the presence of biscuits or not is immaterial.

AllBoxedUp · 14/01/2015 19:06

I think this is the most shocking AIBU I've read - I can't believe biscuits with tea are passé! My mind is boggled. ..

Saying that, YANBU, I sometimes forget and often don't get offered a biscuit when having tea with friends (although often a diet is mentioned. I think it's a nice treat sometimes but not compulsory.

GlitzAndGigglesx · 14/01/2015 19:10

I'm a self confessed biscuit fiend, but don't actually have any with my coffee Shock. My GPs always have the biscuit tub out with their tea/coffee and when guests visit. It's the same if we visit elderly relatives. Idk how people can keep them just for drinks Blush. I love a good custard cream or job nob. Ooh and not to forget choc digestives with the caramel layer...drooooools

Fozzleyplum · 14/01/2015 19:58

YANBU. Its no coincidence that people who habitually have biscuits as a "treat" when they have a drink, are the ones who tend to have difficulty controlling their weight.

ZingTheGreat · 14/01/2015 20:53

One of my New Years Resolutions was to enjoy a cup of tea without a biscuit..........hmm........scratch that one Grin

Madcatgirl · 14/01/2015 21:47

You arguing massively unreasonable. I'm ashamed if I'm caught on the hop with no biscuits in for unexpected or expected guests! Shock

WorraLiberty · 14/01/2015 21:50

Why though Madcatgirl?

Is offering a drink not enough?

standingonlego · 15/01/2015 01:11

My "eat well" day has been utterly sabotaged by biscuits today - shortbread at work and custard creams at MILs. Chocolate I can resist...but a Brew in my hand and biscuits an option it is "oh, go on then....just the one four"

DeeCayed · 15/01/2015 01:20

YABU

A cuppa is too wet without a biscuit!

Maybe I should take a leaf out of your book though as I eat far too much chocolate/biscuits/cake which has done my waistline no favours.

echt · 15/01/2015 02:44

YANBU, but that's only because we don't have biscuits in the house at all, and cake only at Christmas.

ZingTheGreat · 15/01/2015 07:02

Grin @ too wet

I wonder if you tip breadcrumbs into your bath!Wink

Yanbu. The only time I get offered biscuits (or indeed any food) is at my DGM's house (and boy oh boy is she a feeder...)

It's a bit old fashioned really. The only biacuits in this house are the ones DH buys himself and then scoffs in one sitting pig. I'm also eating clean, the temptation isn't worth it.
