I have a broken toy (Christmas present) that I wanted to return to Argos and I have never had so much trouble with a company to get it replaced.

It was a pair of Thomas the tank rollerskates that I purchased back in june (I'm one of them annoying people that like to be organised and buy throughout the year) the ankle strap has a screw missing which means they wont do up. I have lost the receipt (I think, I haven't really tried looking for it) but didn't think it would actually be a problem to return for a replacement without it because they are quite obviously broken and from Argos (distinctive catalogue labelling). They don't have them in stock, but would happily swap for something else.

sent my DH in last Monday (our nearest store is in the same town he works in and he didn't go back to work until then) to be told, they wont do anything without a receipt. He rang customer service from his office when he got back, who told him that as they still had the distinctive Argos labelling on the box that it was fine to take them back to the shop for an exchange, the person on the phone told him that she had rang the store on his behalf and spoken to the manager who said they would do it as a 'goodwill' gesture.

He then went back into the shop on Thursday (soonest he could get there) only to be told by the manager that no such phone call had been made and yet again refused to take them back without a receipt.

DH rang customer services again, who said they could not overrule the manager's decision, he told them that he had previously rang customer services and been told that it was fine to take them back without a receipt, but this phone call has mysteriously vanished from their system!!

DH rang me at home straight after letting me know that he couldn't take them back, so I contacted them through facebook to complain about being messed about, and asked them what I could do if I couldn't find my receipt, they asked if I paid by card (I didn't) but I told them I had the reservation e-mail, they said that would be fine as proof of purchase as they could use that to trace the transaction, they would contact the store for us to confirm and ring us back over the weekend....result!!

We had no phone call!!!

I phoned customer service this morning, used ref number and asked what was going on? was told she needed to speak to another dept and would get back to me within the hour......she didn't!!

I rang again this afternoon, gave ref number, explained that somebody was supposed to ring me back (TWICE) and asked what's going on? He put me on hold, phone started to ring again and was answered by someone in the store (wasn't even told I was being put through) so had to explain the situation yet again.....was told by them instore that the e-mail confirmation wasn't enough and they wont be able to trace the transaction, I explained how badly we had been messed around and that I wasn't happy and that I that I wanted to speak to the manager and she put the phone down on me!!!!

I immediately rang back, it rang for at least 5 minutes and was answered by someone else, I told them I wasn't happy that id just had the phone put down on me and wanted the name of the person who did it so that I could complain to the manager, I was told the manager was on lunch and to ring back later, I told her that I had spent enough of my time already and that he could ring ME back, said thank you, bye. and then she said sarcastically "im putting the phone down now, I'm not hanging up on you" I said that I didn't think she was and that our conversation had come to an end and that I was very rude of her to make that comment.

I am now awaiting my phone call back from the manager, I am fuming, I don't even care about the bloody skates anymore, but I am so bloody disgusted by the customer service. Im not being unreasonable am I??

Twitter might help you, I find the people that run the twitter accounts much more helpful than the people on the phone

I'm looking at you Yodel, you piece of crap company

YesIDidMeanToBeSoRudeActually · 13/01/2015 13:10

I only know I bought them in june because I did a quick e-mail check to see when I reserved them....which I was told was proof of purchase, and they're not 6 months old, they're brand new to us."

They are six months old, you've just not opened them (lesson learnt on that score I guess). Email of reservation isn't proof of purchase, YABU as you should have kept or looked for the receipt. If you had, you wouldn't have this problem!

And this is one where I'd love to hear the other side of the story re the phone call being terminated. I'm always Shock how some people treat staff, retail in particular and I seriously doubt, when phone calls are recorded, they just decided to hang up on you deliberately without a good reason.

I've never had a problem with argos apart from when we bought some shit cheap furniture, should have know better, but I still got a refund no problem. Mind you I had the receipt

LadyLupin Thanks so much for your help with that e-mail address, it has indeed done the trick and Argos are reimbursing me.

Obviously I know not all Argos stores and staff are rubbish, I've never had any problems before, but it became the principal of them refusing to do anything because I'd paid cash not card (the store never had a problem with the amount of time that had lapsed) and then the shoddy customer service that followed that my real issue is.

I have to admit to chuckling at the comments that they shouldn't do anything in case I'd stolen them, I really wouldn't have gone to the trouble of trying to return them, I'd have just pinched something else to compensate if that was my nature!

Fair enough but there was a thread where someone said they returned all unwanted duplicate presents to john lewis - with no idea where they were bought.

Nydj · 13/01/2015 13:57

how could OP have stolen them from argos? they keep all their stock 'in the back' don't they?

ouryve · 13/01/2015 13:58

They could be stolen from anywhere. Even someone else's house.

Mabelface · 13/01/2015 13:58

There is some stock on the shop floor.

HumptyDumptyBumpty · 13/01/2015 14:06

They are faulty! They are covered by the Sale of Goods Act, and therefore the receipt is immaterial. Cannot believe how many posters are jumping on the OP for

a) not keeping receipts for SIX MONTHS plus you must all have filing cabinets floor to ceiling to do this

b) being frugal and sensible by buying ahead.

FFS.
OP, glad you got resolution. Thanks

SilentBob · 13/01/2015 14:10

Argos used to sell their end of lines and 'salvage' items to auction houses, along with many other companies. People used to buy from there for pennies and return to the stores for full refunds.

I know because I was an auctioneer. Obviously we marked to goods we sold but there were millions of items and some may have been missed or other houses may not have marked at all.

Just an explanation of the needing a receipt malarkey.

Oh, and I do think YABU to want to escalate this to social media or CEO when, by your own admission, you haven't even bothered to look for said receipt.

KatieKatie1980 · 13/01/2015 14:28

Had similar. Went via Twitter and then emailed the CEO of Home Retail Group or w/e their name is. Product is faulty and unsafe! Try emailing him Smile

Wrong.

If goods are faulty and you have lost the receipt all you have to do is provide proof of purchase, such as a cheque book stub or a credit card statement

In your scenario I could wander into Argos with my 6 year old knackered kettle (because they still sell that model) and get an instant replacement without receipt.

naty1 · 13/01/2015 15:05

Its not the not keeping receipt 6m. Its the not keeping it when box hasnt been opened item not used at all.
If you dont follow the rules, you are asking for a favour/exception which they dont have to do.
Surely its worth keeping receipts for when things go wrong witin the 1st yr.
We bought kindle for parents for xmas and made sure it was all working before xmas and it was as described as this was back in oct/nov.
But i mean youve cost them x amount of money, tying up their phones for something which would have been resolved immediately when visiting store with receipt.

I expect argos has stuff nicked by staff too from the back.

ArtDecoGirly · 14/01/2015 17:33

There's absolutely no stock on display in my local Argos, actually. A few annuals and bits like batteries etc...all right next to the tills, but no actual stuff you order. Or in my next nearest store, come to think of it!

Hillingdon · 14/01/2015 17:47

I saw a chap in M&S last week trying to get a refund on some items. He had his goods in a tesco carrier bag and seem confused when the assistant asked for the receipt.

He said he didnt normally need one, as they were small items the member of staff said she would look up the last selling price which was half of what he claimed to have paid.

He kicked off demanding cash, tbh he could have picked them off the shelf, stuffed them into his bag and then gone to the refunds till demanding cash. Isnt that why M&S tightened up their refunds rules?

Not suggesting the OP has done anything like this at alll! However if you are going to buy something in June for Xmas at least keep the receipt or test the product.

MrsPeterQuill · 14/01/2015 19:01

For all those scoffing that Argos don't have stock on the shop floor, a lot of them do. Both my local Argos's have loads of stuff out from tellies to hair driers.

Secondly, a lot of people have a lot of brass neck. I worked in a department store where a 'customer' once took a bra straight off the hanger then took it straight to customer services for a 'refund.'

Which is why shops require proof of purchase ie a receipt, a credit card statement, or at a push a cheque stub.

Glad it's worked out for you OP but I also hope that next time, you keep your receipt Smile
