to want an underwired nursing bra?

Am wearing wired ones still in late pregnancy, and can't bear the idea of swapping to a non wired in a few weeks time (bf'd my two kids aged 6&8 and have big boobs, decent support needed!). Anyone know of any decent ones, and if they are true to size given I assume it will be an internet order. Thank you!

I got Marie Jo ones from Rigby & Peller. Very comfy, even at night (effective against co-sleeping DS2's wandering hands).

Sorry to hijack - but does anyone have any suggestions for decent nursing bras that come in a 30 back? Not long to go now and I'm wearing a 30GG, can't bear the thought (or feel) of non-underwired. Getting anything comfortable has been so exhausting, I'm tempted not to breastfeed to avoid having to deal with the underwear situation.....

Thank you for starting this thread!

I fucking hate non underwired nursing bras and was dreading wearing them again in a few weeks time.

missymayhemsmum · 11/01/2015 23:02

I thought the restrictions of underwiring made you more likely to get blocked ducts/ mastitis which is why most nursing bras aren't underwired? Particularly in the early weeks your breasts can change shape and size during the day, surely underwiring would be painful if you went too long between feeds?

FloraPost · 11/01/2015 23:12

Not if they're properly fitted. The wires shouldn't sit anywhere near the ducts.

AnythingNotEverything · 11/01/2015 23:15

I think as long as the wires don't sit on breast tissue and you have room in the cups to grow between feeds, it shouldn't be a problem. That said, you get to know your own boobs. I'm pregnant again after feeding for 14 months, and will switch back to wired bras at around 10 weeks I think, or might keep wired bras for days when I leave the house.

I think you need to be sensible about it.

Okay have ordered the ebay converter clips, only £2.95 delivered and will ask my local seamstress shop to do it! Not like my massive bras will be needed post nursing anyway, as I went back down to 30E after both previous pregs, so worth trying to convert for sure. Swithering on the many choices now - I rely on my moulded cup plain panache tshirt bras, all these bloody reviews of thin fabrics that nipples show through and wierd sizing are stressing me out. Hate online buying. £40 odd for a bra that I will probably have to send back before getting the size right. Gah. Thanks again for all comments though, v helpful.

I now always wear under-wires in pregnancy and nursing, have never been able to get a decent fit or comfort from a non under wired bra despite trying many styles- if they are well fitted the underwires shouldn't be near your breast tissue anyway.
The only time i had a blocked ducts/mastitis was with my first child, while wearing a poorly fitted non under wired bra which had a massive band and poorly fitted, too small cups that caused that horrible 4 boob thing and therefore constricted the ducts on the upper, central parts of the breast

all settled down with a comfy, well fitted Anita bra

Bravado Bliss Nursing bras are fab. Not wired but very firm underneath, give a lovely lifted shape. You will be a bigger cup size than you expect, they run quite small I think.

BabyX · 12/01/2015 00:57

And Amazon do free returns on this item so you can try a couple of sizes.

Levismum · 12/01/2015 01:04

I ended up wearing normal bras but for the opposite reason. I have a very small bust. Without wire & padding, I am totally flat chested.
I wore good nursing bras with soft moulded cups for a few months but from about 6 months I returned to my usual bras.
After almost a year of bf 6th dc, I really really need the wire & padding !

SchnitzelVonKrumm · 12/01/2015 07:34

I only went up one cup size through pregnancy and breast feeding, band size stayed the same (am usually a 32F). Everyone's different, which is why nursing bras need to be fitted properly.

TestingTestingWonTooFree · 12/01/2015 08:06

Brastop are a cheap supplier of big cup bras. I've converted some from there, it was easy - just make sure you sew the clip on the right way round (hook on the strap, eye on the cup). You need some elastic/ribbon too to stop the shoulder strap escaping altogether.

TestingTestingWonTooFree · 12/01/2015 08:07

I've had Ewa M bras and they were good. Their fitting guide was shit though and resulted in returns to Poland. In the end, I just needed my normal size (actual size though, not what M&S would put me in.)

TerrorAustralis · 12/01/2015 08:10

YADNBU. The bigger the boobs the worse they look without underwire.

Elomi are the best for shape - excellent everyday bras. If you want some pretties, look at Hot Milk and Cake Lingerie.

AnythingNotEverything · 12/01/2015 08:18

Yey OP! Another conversion conversion! I'm on admission to stop big booked women wearing such ugly bras they want to stop bf (which is what I felt at 4 months). Hurrah! Spread the message.

ScottishDiblet · 12/01/2015 08:20

Ooh I finally discovered amazing underwired nursing bras from ample bosom dot com they were fab and come in the big sizes.

HazleNutt · 12/01/2015 09:17

ebay is a good source of cheap bras, especially if you don't care that they are in last year's colours Grin
I even got some cheap Fauves that I converted - amazing shape and support, was feeling like a human again after the sweaty monoboob hell of non-wired bras.

As others have said, yes you can wear underwires - if the bra fits, the wires should not be sitting on your breast tissue anyway.

pescatore · 12/01/2015 10:45

These are fantastic, wash well and imho are reasonably priced. They are one of the few I feel comfortable wearing without underwire because they are very 'stable' but they also do several versions with underwire.
