To want DH to stop saying "right?" at the end of sentences?

GermanHouseCat · 10/01/2015 18:50

Over the last few weeks my DH has picked up a habit of saying "right?" at the end of sentences, eg "That house is up for sale, right?" sometimes in a questioning way but also as affirmation on something he already knows.

"The table for dinner is at 8, right?"

"We're flying out on the 18th, right?"

It is making me stabby. AIBU to stamp my feet every time he says it to try and get him to stop? It sounds like a vague Americanism, like starting sentences with "so".

Progress update: DH is already saying it MUCH less. I only counted two today vs at least ten a day previously.

My shouting "argh-stop-saying-right!!!!!!!" Like a banshee every time seems to be working. Wink

I hate 'so' at the beginning. It's everywhere on radio 4 at the moment. And 'do you understand?' And 'does that make sense?' at the end of every sentence.

Redglitter · 11/01/2015 22:32

My niece seems to think the word 'like' has to be in every sentence she says

it's like so annoying Confused

TooOldForGlitter · 11/01/2015 22:39

I feel your pain Redglitter, my daughter can't get through a sentence without saying like 5 or 6 times. "This boy at school is like, so cute and me and Abi were like talking to him about science and he was so like funny". STOP IT YOU ANNOYING CHILD OR IM NOT MAKING YOUR TEA!!

pinktransit · 11/01/2015 22:46

Ohhh... the 'like' thing.
I cured my dds of it by interrupting every.single.time

DD "So, Abi was, like, saying that.."
Me "Oh, she was 'like' saying, not actually saying?"
DD Sigh. "So, Abi was saying that we should, like, go out on Saturday, and"
Me " Oh, LIKE go out, not actually go out? How do you 'like' go out?
DD Sigh heavily. "So , Abi says that we should go into town on Saturday. Can you give me a lift into town please?"

Ad nauseum for every.single.conversation.

They don't do it any more Grin

ZingTheGreat · 11/01/2015 22:48

pink

I do that too!

"you mean James wants to come over similar to Saturday? can you hear how that sentence makes no sense at all? try again"

Grin
Redglitter · 11/01/2015 23:23

Got some good ideas there I must try out Wink

StilleNachtCarolling · 11/01/2015 23:26

YANBU! My five year old daughter has picked up an annoying habit of ending EVERY BLOODY SENTENCE with "eh?" It's driving me bats!

"What's for breakfast, eh?"
"Shall we play dressing up, eh?"

ARGGHGHHHHHHH!

Sprinkfest · 14/01/2015 16:55

DrBonnie when delivering my first, the midwives got wind of the fact that I came to the UK from North America and adapted their usual style to say "Good Job!" rather than "Well Done!" after each push.

They thought they were hilarious. (And I didn't mind, actually. The male midwife was American anyway so I'm sure it was a bit of staff bonding for all concerned.)

As for the phrases that drive one nuts, allow me to submit "Innit."

Summerisle1 · 14/01/2015 17:12

DH appears to have replaced the word "Yes" with "Probably" or at best, "Yes, probably". This is his answer to everything from "Have you put the bins out?" to "There's cake here, do you want some now?"

It is doing my head in.

mrssnodge · 15/01/2015 11:56

My work colleague constantly comes out with" see what Im saying" every three sentences or so- We work in sales selling a service and trying to explain how our service works to customers , all I hear is blah blah " see what Im saying"- blah blah "see what Im saying" drives me nuts!!!!!

There was an interesting discussion before on mn about starting an answer with 'so'.
Apparently it's taught as part of media training. It creats a stand alone sound bite , this is my understanding of it anyway.
If the interviewer's question was answered in a normal way the answer wouldn't make sense when taken out of context.
I'd love a media person to come on and tell me I'm not making this up Grin
Its horribly annoying and suggests the interviewee is barely listening to the question and is reading the answer from a script.

I have an annoying habit , if I'm feeling a little anxious especially, of taking things very literally.
My friend could be telling me some shocking titbit and say " can you believe it?".
Invariably my reply is " but of course ! You're not a liar !'
Then I mentally kick myself for being so bloody socially awkward Blush

Trufflethewuffle · 15/01/2015 13:01

Me: what was for lunch at school today?
DD: it was, like, lasagne
Me: cannelloni perhaps?
DD: ?

ZingTheGreat · 15/01/2015 13:05

truffle

that's brilliant!Grin Grin

UpNorthAgain · 15/01/2015 13:15

'At all' makes me incandescent. As in, 'Is Craig there at all?' He either is or he bloody isn't! Confused

I once confused a salesman greatly by explaining to him that I either did or didn't have a store card; it wasn't possible to have one 'at all'. I had to explain it quite a lot before he grasped what I meant. My DH said I was lucky he (the salesman) didn't punch me.

Adarajames · 15/01/2015 13:19

I've caught the saying 'to be fair' from a friend and am diving myself crazy! Think might have o go with the rubber band punishment to break myself of the habit!
We use in'it but only in a piss take sort of way
