Should I have congratulated neighbour?

I live in a terrace. Neighbour came round to pick up a Mothercare parcel I took in for her. Looking pregnant in that is-she-or-isn't-she oh-god-maybe-she-just-ate-too-many-mince-pies way. When I handed the parcel over, I got the feeling the conversation paused for a moment, like she was waiting for me to say something... and I remembered threads on here and said nothing. MN, what have you done to me? Should I have said something? Or have I dodged a podgy bullet?

Nope you did the right thing! I gained a lot of weight when my mom died and had an acquaintance ask me how the baby is. I told him I didn't have a baby. He started arguing with me, I assured him I was not pregnant, and hadn't given birth. I was mortified!

wise choice.

Once I looked at a very slim friend who was wearing a top that as the wind blew it up made her look pg. I said "ooh may I ask if there's happy news?" she replied sternly "no, you may not"

of course I apologised and crawled away like a dog kicked in the balls, but another friend who walked away with me whispered "you really put your foot in it"
fucking great

Do not assume. ever. never ever.
