Was this police visit a bit suspect? What should we do?

At about 11 o clock last night I heard the main door in our block of 4 flats open. I heard voices...looked through the spyhole and saw my neighbour opposite had opened her door and there was a uniformed policeman standing on the stairs...he didn't come all the way up to the landing.

He was talking to my neighbour and then he went.

Today she told me he had buzzed her door and said "Police" so she let him in...then on the stairs he asked for a woman who doesn't live here...said a name we've never heard.

She said there was nobody here of that name and he asked her "how long have you been here?" and she said "A year...can I help somehow?" and he said "No...it's just a job..." and then went. Confused

We had it transpired both looked out of the window as he left in a normal silver car.

She wondered why he came alone in an ordinary car and had no radio or backup....don't they usually have a 2nd officer in attendance?

Is it odd? Dodgy? Should she report it to the non emergency number? I noted that the man didn't walk very well..his breathing was laboured and he limped quite heavily. He didn't seem very like a normal policeman iykwim...like he wouldn't manage or something...

dancing They will explain that to the neighbour if she calls to confirm but they won't provide the name of the person they were looking for to the op, or at least, they shouldn't! If the op calls, them the most they will do is tell her the officer was genuine.

Happened to me a few weeks ago a po knocked on my door about 10pm one officer (another sitting in an unmarked car) asked for the past owner of our house I said he doesn't live here anymore she asked how long we had lived here, thanked me and left.

loveareadingthanks · 09/01/2015 10:28

Why are you bogging out of the door spy hole because your neighbour is talking to someone?

Charitybelle · 09/01/2015 10:32

Is it just me who immediately thought 'stripper' when I read the OP?? Confused

Nicknacky · 09/01/2015 10:34

Ooooh maybe the neighbour is having a fling within officer who popped round to do "enquiries" and she has had to think on her feet to give her nosy neighbour a story?!

sliceofsoup · 09/01/2015 10:37

A past tenant of our house has a warrant out for his arrest and we get a knock on the door every 6 months or so. Sometimes its quite late in the evening.

It doesn't sound suspicious to me. Police round here are in unmarked cars and plain clothes all the time. I have had CID at my door looking for next door and the man didn't look very nimble, but he did have the police ID.

Trinpy · 09/01/2015 10:51

I think you have to find out what happened now OP just to confirm it definitely wasn't a stripper or someone having an affair Wink.

We had a similar thing to Moving at the house opposite. I also thought 'none of my business what it's about'. Dh, otoh, marched right up to the bloke who's house it was the next time we saw him and said 'alright mate? Saw the police were breaking down your door the other night. What was it? Meth lab in the basement?' I was Blush but it turned out to be quite a good icebreaker!

Lovereading because she's had trouble with her ex thank you very much. I was keeping an eye on her. I heard male voice and thought he'd come to hassle her drunk. DH and I watch out for her...she's very vulnerable.

Even phoning 101 is no guarantee they'll be able to tell you anything. If the officer was there on an enquiry relating to another matter there probably won't be a call logged to the address

MinceSpy · 09/01/2015 11:42

Police officers frequently work alone and they often drive unmarked cars. How do you know he didn't have a radio? Doesn't sound suspicious to me.

giraffesCantFlyWithReindeer · 09/01/2015 14:01

11pm can be to try and catch people in - especially if trying to give a citation or something

Redglitter · 09/01/2015 14:14

or he was night shift and had just come on duty

MrsGSR · 09/01/2015 14:19

Nope, that's exactly what I thought too! I think it's because of the 'it's just a job bit'.

Gruntfuttock · 09/01/2015 14:46

What did he mean by "It's just a job" anyway? Confused

CousinCairngormMcWomble · 09/01/2015 16:44

Oh thank goodness! Also thought stripper but then everyone else was being really serious! I think it was the bit about him being really unfit actually, reminded me of in Friends when they get a stripper for Phoebe's bachelorette party!

AngelDreams · 09/01/2015 16:46

thats really kind of you MrsTawdry x

I had a call looking for the previous occupiers from police, in unmarked police car, about 2 years after moving in*.
I confirmed they didn't live there any more, showed a piece of post I had just labelled "Return to sender, moved out 2 years ago" and that seemed fine. They apologised for disturbing me and I've not heard anything more.

*The house had been repossessed so I have no forwarding address.
