To think ensuites are unnecessary and a bit passé

Just bought a new house. 4 bedrooms but just one tiny bathroom. Dh wants to put an ensuite in the master bedroom but I think it will ruin the dimensions and isn't really worth it. I've never really got the appeal of ensuites- unless spacious they always seem a bit cramped and grotty, and the bathroom is only across the hall. I want to make a combined wet room and downstairs loo instead (we're doing an extension so there would be room) but dh says that's silly. So aibu?? Or is he?

When we converted our attic about 10 years ago we turned it into two large bedrooms with en suite shower rooms for our two DS. It has been fantastic all through their teens having the bathroom just for me and DH. So I think YABU.

MrsTawdry · 07/01/2015 21:04

YANBU I've always thought them them awful. We lived in MILs rental home once and it has an ensuite in the master...I thought it disgusting to go to the toilet so close to where you sleep!

DH was banned. He did use the shower but again...who wants all that steam near their bed!

Just go to the bathroom! It's indulgent to want a bathroom/toilet a step from your bed!

Strokethefurrywall · 07/01/2015 21:05

What's so wrong with being indulgent?

CaramelPie · 07/01/2015 21:09

YANBU.

I think they're naff. I'm sure not all are pokey and grotty but all the ones I've seen are.

MrsTawdry · 07/01/2015 21:09

Well it's gross! So close to your bed!

MrsTawdry · 07/01/2015 21:10

It's just a blinged up po!

GoodGirlGoneWrong · 07/01/2015 21:14

I have 2 ensuite's one in my bedroom one in DH's bedroom.

A main bathroom kitted out for the children Confused

And a down stairs loo!

I have a lot of toilets to clean Hmm

Love having my own space Grin

We have three bathrooms, well only one has a bath in, the others are showers. We put the third bathroom in and made the other two shower rooms. It is our guest bathroom and I love love love that it is tidy and clean for guests without husband or boy funk in it and I don't have to send guests into a family bathroom. I love that when we come in from a trip or shopping or whatever there is no fighting for the loo because there are three to choose from. Most of all I love that the only time I have to go in my teen's bathroom is to check they have cleaned it. That alone is worth having an extra bathroom. None of ours are very big or fancy but I love having them. We could have done just a toilet and sink which was what the original plan was but it wouldn't have saved space really so we put the bath/shower in the guest bath so we could have just showers in the rest and so when my parents come to stay they have somewhere to put their medication and their own bathroom (they come for several weeks usually). All the bathrooms had to be replaced anyway because they were old and water damaged.

Our bathroom isn't ensuite to the room that we sleep in, but it will be eventually. I lub lub lub it. My shower is one of my favourite parts of the house where I can shower in peace. I can go to the toilet without someone wanting in. Totally worth it.

youareallbonkers · 07/01/2015 21:17

Because if you have guests you end up with a queue for tha bathroom morning and evening

SelfconfessedSpoonyFucker · 07/01/2015 21:19

I also don't get the stink/steam argument. Apparently you all need better fans.

Bowlersarm · 07/01/2015 21:21

No stink or steam from our en suite. Just perfect indulgence a footstep away. I just love it.

Christmashamster · 07/01/2015 21:22

I love my ensuite. Nothing nicer when we've got a full house of grown up kids for the weekend than to lock my bedroom door put the tv or radio on and have a long deep bath. I can pad about in my towel afterwards and not be disturbed. We always open the window after a bath or shower so there has never been any mould problem and it means my nice bath stuff doesn't get nicked by the girls.

TheLovelyBoots · 07/01/2015 21:22

Most people like ensuites. I went as far as to plumb my bedroom closet so that it could be converted easily to a bathroom should the next person want one, but I wanted an enormous closet instead. I don't know that configurations can be considered passe.

I think this depends mightily on your bedroom layout. We have 5 bedrooms over 3 floors, none of which has an ensuite. We are undisturbed by guests.

Janethegirl · 07/01/2015 21:23

I bought a 4 bed house with no ensuite. One of the first things I did was to install an ensuite bathroom complete with bath and shower ( and loo and sink). Was lucky though as it could be done without losing a bedroom. Have also a reasonably sized family bathroom and downstairs loo and shower.
If you have kids I feel an ensuite is essential, but it must be bigger than a cupboard Grin

flashnorman · 07/01/2015 21:25

Yadbu I love mine, wen I wake in the night busting for a wee I literally just roll out of bed & I'm at the loo Grin

rhetorician · 07/01/2015 21:27

we have recently added an ensuite (3 bedroom house, one bathroom with loo in it) as we had our attic converted. I think most of you would consider it poky - it's not very big, but has loo, small sink and shower (we are not very tall!) and I absolutely love it, especially when there are visitors in the house (who sleep next to, and use, the old bathroom). If I wanted to luxuriate for hours in the bath i wouldn't have had children I'd use the downstairs one, but for quick everyday on the way to work showers, the ensuite is perfect. I can't see the need for more than one though. YABU...

Jingleybells · 07/01/2015 21:29

Yabu I like my space!

MrsMook · 07/01/2015 21:30

I don't tend to use ours, but that's because it's rather ancient and pink, with a dribble shower. It's not poky though, there's a bidet in there! When we sort the new master bedroom, it will have a new en suite, and the current ensuite will be merged to make a larger bathroom. It needs to be replaced if it's kept, and there's not much point or need when that becomes a spare room.

As much as I don't like it, I appreciate that it stops DH deluging the bathroom each time he showers.

Strokethefurrywall · 07/01/2015 21:30

Yes, I was particularly grateful for mine at 27 months pregnant when I only had to waddle a few steps to mine Grin

Ensuites are even nicer with a jacuzzi tub and double vanity. And my kids get to leave theirs in whatever condition they see fit whilst mine stays lovely and untouched by grubby toddlers.

guitarosauras · 07/01/2015 21:30

I miss mine. I miss being able to go for a naked wee in the night.

Inertia · 07/01/2015 21:31

If you're one of those people who is appalled by the idea of having a bathroom leading directly from your bedroom with no intervening lobby/ landing area, how on earth do you cope with hotel bedrooms? Or do you only stay in hotels without ensuite bathrooms? Or perhaps the Presidential Suite?

BreakfastAtStephanies · 07/01/2015 21:35

We extended our house massively last year. I got an en-suite for the first time in my life. It has a shower ( large walk in with 2 shower-heads, one normal and one rain- shower. DH and I can share a shower if we like - very roomy. We have never DTD in there but have shared. Also a loo, sink and mirrored cabinet with ( Hollywood ) lights in the mirrors! Oh, and a lovely heated towel rail.
It has a small window and extractor fan so no pongs/dampness.
I love love love it ! There is no going back now. So maybe YABU, - BUT - my master bedroom is now 6 metre by 5 metre so plenty of room for the en-suite, be daft not to. I keep it immaculate. Unlike the main bathroom which belongs to 2 teenagers and looks a mess most of the time ( unless I have just cleaned it ).

dogtanianandthe3muskehounds · 07/01/2015 21:36

Oh dear, you would hate my en-suite. I think that if you're planning on staying long-term in a house then you go with the option that is most practical/desirable for your needs. We moved into a 5 bed house last year with only one toilet. The options were to portion off a small part of the master bedroom to build an (admittedly tiny) en-suite shower room next to the existing bathroom (so very easy to extend pipes/waste) or to spend a lot of time and money laying pipes etc downstairs to try to fit in a downstairs loo somewhere.

unlucky83 · 07/01/2015 21:37

2 bathrooms for four beds - I think a good idea.
Downstairs loo (whether included in that or not) a good idea...
Ensuite (unless specifically built etc) - no
Put us off buying one house - had a loft conversion, poky ensuite. Room was so low they couldn't have a central light fitting in the master bedroom, no wardrobe (had a small cupboard outside the door). Ensuite was in eaves....so very small and with a sloping roof....honestly I would have preferred it left for storage (they had also gone all open plan downstairs -looked lovely until you realsied there was absolutely nowhere to store anything. Struggled to sell it and obviously had spent a fortune on it but just not practical...
Our new house will have a tiny bathroom and a small single/study (box room) and a downstairs loo. Neighbour has knocked them into one - so can have separate shower etc. Personally I'd rather have the box room. (I have a big bathroom here - no-one has a bath and a shower at the same time, just two things to clean - also lots of floor space means it becomes a dumping ground for things waiting to go into attic (christmas boxes are in there at moment) Alternatively I could make the box room into a separate bathroom (and make one bedroom ensuite) ...but.... I'd rather have the box room...
From a cleaning point of view - lots of infill executive new builds here. Most of them have every bedroom ensuite. One has 4 bedrooms and 5 bathrooms and a ground floor cloak...just think of all that cleaning - even just hand towels - that's 6 handtowels, almost a load - and then keeping them all supplied with loo roll, soap etc - you'd need a housekeeper...
