To think it's not that hard to wipe a child's nose?

I know it's winter and I know it's cold season but really - the amount of babies and toddlers I see with dried-up snot encrusted all over their faces! It's isnt just a runny nose that's dried, it's literally all over their faces in some cases. Surely it isn't that hard to take a baby wipe and clean their face?

Yes, perhaps IABU but it's one of my pet peeves!

YADNBU I can't stand it, makes me heave to see it.

Both mine hated having their noses wiped, DS2 still hates it but I do it anyway - because I hate it yes but mainly because it must feel awful to have wet snot slowly creeping down your lip and/or dried on snot making your skin feel all tight.

Ugh

maninawomansworld · 07/01/2015 18:33

Depends on whether child has the sniffles. ds2 has a runny nose at the moment and if I tried to keep it perfectly clean I'd be wiping his nose 94 times an hour! Literally, I can wipe, bin the tissue, turn back to him and there is MORE snot! How on earth does it come back so quickly?!

ItsAllGoingToBeFine · 07/01/2015 18:38

YANBU - it gives me the boak.

You need to get them to blow as well as just wipe though. And use Kleenex Balsalm or.similar, it really helps stop noses getting sore.

Do slightly agree with ithoughtofitfirst though, it is really annoying to have child constantly demanding tissues - better than the alternative though...

I remember before I had DC telling one of my friends I would NEVER countenance a snotty nosed child. Blush Wink

SuperMumTum · 07/01/2015 19:38

DD has been able to wipe and, more importantly, blow her own nose since she was about 18 months. Best thing I ever taught her. I hate seeing snotty kids, its disgusting and almost negligent to leave them covered in bodily fluids all day.

CurlyhairedAssassin · 07/01/2015 20:15

Are some kids just more snotty than others or some parents less "wipey"? I remember mine having colds and being terribly snotty (like we all are when we have a cold) but I always wiped them even if it WAS often and they tried to wriggle away, and taught them to blow into a tissue too. The Balsalm tissues help, as well as Vaseline or sudocreme or something round nostrils.). As soon as ds2 learned to blow I found that he developed fewer phlegmy coughs - he has a bad gag reflex and loads of snot hanging around his tubes was really not a good thing for him.)

I don't really understand the unwillingness to wipe to be honest. You don't see adults walking round like that and I haven't seen any medical research to say that children produce more about than adults. Confused

Gafrey1 · 07/01/2015 20:15

Negligent? It's snot! What do you think it's going to do? How would you keep a nose clean when it pours 24/7 for two and a half years. That would mean I couldn't have done anything other than wipe a nose, no making dinner, food shopping, school run? And it would still be like it had a sleep study not revealed oxygen saturation levels at 78%. Doctors refused to refer her for over a year as she had not had a single episode of tonsilitis. Surgery two weeks after sleep study. Snot was the least of our worries.

Shitshit · 07/01/2015 20:18

Yanbu. It's gross.

One of my friend has two sons, who ALWAYS seem to have huge green bogies/snot/dried snot filling their noses and dripping down their faces. It's like she doesn't even notice.

I actually felt sick sitting opposite them when we ordered some food at a cafe Blush but then I am weird about snot anyway. Give me vomit any day!

ithoughtofitfirst · 07/01/2015 20:21

Snot doesn't actually bother me that much. It's when someone's kid shits themselves in baby group and no one will fess up. Grr. Will someone PLEASE make the smell of shit go away.

Poor DD had a 6m cold before she turned one, and I could not keep up with the snot. Her nose was so raw it hurt her, so she'd claw at the tissue.

Solved now. We use fabric hankies, and bought her some kids' ones of her own so she can choose to do her own nose instead!

MrsMook · 07/01/2015 20:46

I have snot monsters for about 9 months of the year between sniffle season and hayfever. We tend to get August, September and October free. It crusts on so quickly and is a pain to pick off. I use cloth wipes, and as great as they are against the forces of weetabix, they still struggle against dry snot. I don't want to make my children sore by constantly rubbing and picking at them.

Royalsighness · 07/01/2015 20:51

ask DS and he will say YABU as he throws a tantrum when you wipe his nose.

Ask FIL and he will agree with DS as he never wipes DS nose either.

Saline wipes are good for this as they don't leave the nose sore, help shift that really baked on snot and help dry up the snot, best to keep the nose wiped to keep snot out of the eyes.
