i only earn 84.00 a week so im not sure what type on maternity pay im entitled to... also i thought i got 39 weeks of work that would be paid. but i can take 52 weeks of but would only get 39 weeks of it paid?

and now im reading there are 2 different payments 26 weeks of one then 26 weeks of the other... so where does the 39 weeks come in? so does that mean i get 26 weeks paid for ordinary maternity and then, 13 weeks additional maternity pay?

i have looked at direct gov. and its just confusing my only brain cell :(

The 26 and 26 is leave - you can come back after 26 weeks off to your current job. Or you can take up to another 26 weeks and have a right to return to an equivalent job, but it may not be the exact same job.

The 39 weeks is pay. You will get 90% of your earnings.

ghostspirit · 06/01/2015 17:34

oh so i get 39 weeks pay. if i choose to take longer of. i fund myself?

BMO - pretty much everything you just posted is wrong.

You most definitely do NOT get 39 weeks pay @ 90% of your earnings with most jobs!

this is why you should never asks ransoms on the Internet

Writerwannabe83 · 06/01/2015 17:41

My sister got 6 months maternity leave at full pay Shock I couldn't believe it when she told me!!

Pumpkinette · 06/01/2015 17:42

Do you earn £84 before or after tax?

When is your due date and when did you start your employment?

You will get paid for 39 weeks but they type of payment and amount depends on the above questions.

It might work out as 39 weeks at 90% pay (£75 ish).

If £84 is your take home pay and you get paid more before tax & NI then you might get paid more.

It also depends on if you are entitled to SMP or MA. (Which is why in asking your due date and work start date.

ghostspirit · 06/01/2015 17:43

original i thought it depended on how much you earn weather you get 90% or not?

i think mine might be less because of the low wage.

im more worried if i will get paid for the 39 weeks even if it is a bit less that 90%. i dont want to turn into week 27 go to bank and no money there

StatisticallyChallenged · 06/01/2015 17:43

I think what BMO has posted is correct for the OP though, as the OP states she earns £84 a week in which case she would get 90%.

OriginalGreenGiant · 06/01/2015 17:43

Statutory Maternity Pay (SMP) is paid for up to 39 weeks. You get:

90% of your average weekly earnings (before tax) for the first 6 weeks
£138.18 or 90% of your average weekly earnings (whichever is lower) for the next 33 weeks

My understanding is that you can then take another 13 weeks unpaid with most jobs.

And you can go back to work whenever the hell you like...it doesn't have to be after 26 weeks. You just can't work for 2 weeks after giving birth.

evmil · 06/01/2015 17:45

I thought you had to earn an average of £111 per week to get SMP? Ignore me if i am wrong but i currently have a friend who isn't entitled to SMP as she only works part time and hasn't been earning enough

BMO · 06/01/2015 17:45

Original - the OP earns £84 a week, I think you must have missed that.

Pumpkinette · 06/01/2015 17:48

It's 90% of earnings for first 6 weeks then 90% pay or £138 (whichever is lower) for the next 33 weeks.

That's the minimum if you have worked long enough to qualify.

Some companies pay more (eg: my previous employer topped up the maternity pay so I got full pay for 12 weeks then £138 for 21 weeks)

If you haven't worked long enough to qualify for SMP then you get MA.

ghostspirit · 06/01/2015 17:49

pumpkinette i dont pay tax as dont earn enough....

due date 29th april , employment started 1 year ago.... and yeah i thought it was about 75 a week.

i think its the sma and ma thats confusing me lol... so yeah due date 29th april and been in employment for 1 year

Here's the link to the calculator OP if you want to work it out with your dates and earnings :

www.gov.uk/calculate-your-maternity-pay/y

ghostspirit · 06/01/2015 17:53

yeah i have seen that. thats what confuses me. im more worried if its 39 weeks i get of with some sort of payment. or if its 26 weeks i get of :/

OP posts:
Pumpkinette · 06/01/2015 17:54

I work it out as about £75 a week for 33 weeks. You should also get tax credits & child benefit. I'm pretty sure you will also qualify for the £500 maternity grant if it's your first baby. ( but it depends if you have a DP and his earnings for the grant etc)

ghostspirit · 06/01/2015 17:57

not first child so wont get the 500. so i get 75.00 for 33 weeks, then nothing after that?

im trying to work out when i need to go back to work. ie when the money stops

OP posts:
StatisticallyChallenged · 06/01/2015 18:04

No, it's 39 weeks - it's 90% for the first 6 weeks for everyone, then becomes either SMP at £138 or 90% for the following 33 weeks. So 39 weeks total

StatisticallyChallenged · 06/01/2015 18:06

Also check where your company stands re annual leave - you should still accrue it whilst on mat leave. When I had DD I went off two weeks before she was due, used 2 weeks of holiday, mat leave kicked in two weeks later, then I used some holidays at the end too.

ghostspirit · 06/01/2015 18:07

ok as long as i get some money for 39 weeks thats all im bothered about :)

OP posts:
Pumpkinette · 06/01/2015 18:11

You will get Maternity allowance not SMP.

The total amount is £2948 so that's 39 weeks at £75 ish.

You can claim the maternity allowance from 11 before the baby is born if you want. Maybe this is where you are getting confused? You don't have to take it before the baby is born though if you would prefer to take the 39 weeks after baby arrives.

StatisticallyChallenged · 06/01/2015 18:13

Why MA pumpkinette? OP has been there a year already

ghostspirit · 06/01/2015 18:14

yeah i thought it was MA because of the low earning.

so how do i claim MA i have given my matb1 form into work?

OP posts:
StatisticallyChallenged · 06/01/2015 18:17

Ah, yes, under £111 a week (facepalm). OP your employer should give you a form saying you are not eligible and you then apply for ma
