to go off piste with food bank donations, as they only list wanting junk food

haveatarday · 06/01/2015 10:56

At the shops now. The local food bank is only asking for junk food on their list (crisps, biscuits, pot noodles, pasta and sauce, corn flakes).

Aibu to not get these but get healthier stuff, like tinned fruit in natural juce, oats, mixed seeds etc?

I thought you couldn't just re register if you were banned without being banned again. Perhaps I'm being a bit naive.

I can access the internet via my home broadband, mobile broadband, or work computer, plus any family or friends computers, or a library or internet cafe.

If I wanted to create multiple Mumsnet personalities using a number of these, there wouldn't be any way of linking them up would they? Or am I being a bit naive.

(You could make an acceptable tuna and bean salad using tinned tuna, tinned kidney or mixed beans and a bit of pickled beetroot but it is not to everyone's tastes and not warming ).

RumbelowSale · 07/01/2015 11:58

All those beans would certainly give me the runs. Prolly turn my wee red too.

Hakluyt · 07/01/2015 12:03

I'm making a chilli tomorrow, so I will be opening tins of kidney beans. I volunteer to try the Kidney Bean Smash with oatcakes and report back. I will only chop the onion as finely as I can with only a table knife. I will also get my children to try it too. Maybe it's delicious.

Possibly naive as MNHQ have always said they have mystical ways of spotting previously banned posters but, quite rightly, have not said what these are.

Differentnameforthis-

Don't understand, people want tinned peaches and fruit cocktail but not tinned pineapple? Hmm

Maybe I'm strange, but I love tinned pineapple, even just on its own, prefer fresh obvs, but happily eat tinned.

Graciescotland · 07/01/2015 12:39

Jam actually tastes quite nice on oatcakes especially if you layer it up with some peanut butter :)

SDTGisAnEvilWolefGenius · 07/01/2015 12:40

Me too, WitchesGlove - but we are all different. I like the sweet-sharpness of pineapple.

Seff · 07/01/2015 12:46

Pineapple hurts my mouth, but DH and DD love it with gammon.

I guess fruit cocktail and peaches seem more 'pudding-y' than pineapple, not sure why though.

differentnameforthis · 07/01/2015 12:54

I love it too...but it just doesn't go off our shelves as quick as otehr stuff does.

I am not saying don't donate it, just posting that here, it isn't popular!

wigglesrock · 07/01/2015 12:57

My kids would eat tinned peaches all day every day, tinned pineapple not so much. I would use tinned pineapple to cook with, but wouldn't eat it as much cold if that makes sense. Tinned peaches and tinned custard/rice pudding - dessert, tinned pineapple just isn't really as comforting.

RumbelowSale · 07/01/2015 12:58

I was taking ad's for a while. No pineapple was specified. Might be something like that?

Today I've got to go out and buy cheapo sliced white bread. So want a beetroot sanch or 4 now. Crinkly Kev or Plain Jane, dun't matter. With a sachet of soup in a cup, that'll be me sorted this eveningSmile

differentnameforthis · 07/01/2015 13:05

There are SEVERAL threads on here where people have stopped donating to a chosen charity because of one reason for another and people have always been okay with this.

Not giving to any charity is fine, but giving things to a charity that it cannot use/doesn't want, thereby purposefully going AGAINST a suggestion is just stupidity, imo.

Also, being so self involved as to think you know better than the organisers, or think that you need to offer advice as to how to eat healthily...really?

Artandco · 07/01/2015 13:08

Can I ask how to donate if local food bank isn't open often?

I looked online and the only one near us is only open x2 afternoons a week (2-5pm). I work so can never get there at that time.

Stinkle · 07/01/2015 13:12

Art there's usually drop off points in supermarkets/local shops.

Our local FB has a list of all drop off points on their website - we've got them in Sainsbury's, Morrisons, local co-ops, Spar, etc.

Artandco · 07/01/2015 13:14

Stinkle - see I don't think any supermarkets around here do have them. I'm in central London so lost are small metro versions , not large supermarkets.. And I do my own shopping online so just pop into the metros/ or grocers for odd things

Artandco · 07/01/2015 13:14
  • lots, not lost..
ViolettaBridgettettette · 07/01/2015 13:17

Ours wants instant mash and uht fruit juice

slippermaiden · 07/01/2015 13:18

What's wrong with cornflakes??

RumbelowSale · 07/01/2015 13:22

art I saw that too, last night, just a coup,e of afternoons a week for 2hrs each? But it showed me where they operAte(local church here) so my plan is to go along and ask them and then target my donating on their recommendations.

Will also offer my time, if that's of use, got loads of that spare these days.

differentnameforthis · 07/01/2015 13:25

haphazardbystarlight

Just stick to the recommended list, don't try to 'guess' what you think people want/need. Because unless you work there, you don't know what gets taken & what doesn't!

It is honestly a fact that people do not want to have, says 5 of the items going to make one meal. They need food that everyone will eat & that will stretch. As someone said, brown rice takes a while to cook, which uses up valuable resources & unless you have something to go with it, you have a useless packet of something in your cupboard.

Honestly, stick with the list. If unsure, read the suggestions on this thread or call your local fb & find out what they most need.

as they have neither the palate nor the ability to cook anything else. Nobody said that! It's about the MEANS to cook. Something that tales a while in the oven will use up valuable electricity/gas. Especially if on a meter. Some of my clients live in a B&B, so they only have a kettle, a few are homeless, so have nothing to cook with at all.

Stinkle · 07/01/2015 13:29

Is it a Trussel Trust one? It should say on their website where the donation points are. Our warehouse is only open limited hours too (3 mornings a week), but there are donation points all over the place.

Most of our donation points are in the small metro/local co-op type places rather than the big stores. We've got a couple in churches as well. You should find a list of what they require there too

differentnameforthis · 07/01/2015 13:35

Graciescotland Great, well thought out list!

Oh stop it op! You are using the existance of food banks, and therefore extreme poverty, as a source of fun and amusement. I'm failing to see the humour now. Opps, that wasn't me...I copied it & forgot to says "here here" before I posted!

catlover97 · 07/01/2015 13:37

Nowt useful to add but this thread has opened my eyes...will be donating to my local FB this weekend. Thanks all

MiscellaneousAssortment · 07/01/2015 13:41

Good bank threads usually work out worse than this one!

MiscellaneousAssortment · 07/01/2015 13:42
