to go off piste with food bank donations, as they only list wanting junk food

haveatarday · 06/01/2015 10:56

At the shops now. The local food bank is only asking for junk food on their list (crisps, biscuits, pot noodles, pasta and sauce, corn flakes).

Aibu to not get these but get healthier stuff, like tinned fruit in natural juce, oats, mixed seeds etc?

OP posts:
MrsMcRuff · 06/01/2015 14:52

I think there are lots of useful links on here, so a shame to delete the thread when it's become all grown-up!

Enormouse · 06/01/2015 14:53

I think there's a lot of valid, useful information on this thread.

The poster is the same one that thought her dp was having hot gay sex in the woods whilst going out running. So obviously a wind up merchant.

ouryve · 06/01/2015 14:57

FlowerFairy Hmm

You might eat a raw wholefood diet, but people's kids don't.

aprilanne · 06/01/2015 14:58

at christmas my local food bank were in tesco .and i asked what would you like .they asked for some kiddies character stuff .tins packets .that sort of thing .i was mortified to think some wee soul may have been eating this on xmas day .ours even took selection boxes and small toys .great britain maybe not

RandomNPC · 06/01/2015 15:00

Has the OP NC and come back as FlowerFairy?

KateSMumsnet · 06/01/2015 15:01

Ok, seems like quite a few of you are keen for this thread to stay, so we'll leave it as it is. Obviously if we get wind of any more shenanigans we'll have to reconsider, as you were

RandomNPC · 06/01/2015 15:02

It's the same poster, Enormouse? They are entertaining then, I'll give them that.

firesidechat · 06/01/2015 15:03

Don't ruin our thread Flower.

When you can't afford heating you need a hot meal, however it comes.

Enormouse · 06/01/2015 15:05

Yep random. I agree. And it's not sweat, it's jizz, obviously Grin.

flowerfairy maybe you and the OP could get together and co-author some books?
"Worthy meals for the poor"
"You don't deserve nice stuff so eat what you're given"
"101 ways with cold kidney beans"

BoyFromTheBigBadCity · 06/01/2015 15:12

Enormouse YES

firesidechat · 06/01/2015 15:15

On second thoughts Flower, post one of your healthy, non cook recipes and we will see if it's doable.

It had better not include kidney beans or oatcakes. (Stern frown)

expatinscotland · 06/01/2015 15:18

I wouldn't want to be helped to a raw kidney bean and squirt of tomato purée.

SauvignonBlanche · 06/01/2015 15:38

Some people just don't want to be helped
How very rude of them. Hmm

goodasitgets · 06/01/2015 15:40

I got some mug shot things to donate, and tinned chilli/chicken in sauce things. Value toothbrushes were 18p for 3, toothpaste, tampons, deo, shower gel, those ready made oat pots things. Sounds awful but it was nice to shop and think "what would I like, with no cooking facility, that's tasty and filling"

ThePrincessButtercup · 06/01/2015 15:46

So, you didn't shop like the OP, thinking 'what would be good for these people', goodasitgets?

RojaGato · 06/01/2015 15:48

Thinking of volunteering at my local foodbank, anyone got any experience/advice/knowledge? Started a thread here

goodasitgets · 06/01/2015 15:51

Nah I had fun going mental with reduced christmas chocolates as nice things to put in Grin

LineRunner · 06/01/2015 15:51

It's storage, too, isn't it? If you don't have a fridge, or the electricity is off, the whole food diet experience is pretty mouldy / squishy.

And impossible for food banks to supply anyway.

QuintlessShadows · 06/01/2015 16:02

It is sad that this has turned out to be so laughable.

I really did not know that somebody with a liking for dark chocolate and ginger oat cakes could be so dim! I had this image in my mind that people who like this sort of stuff is fairly educated, and not ill informed and arrogant! How wrong could I be?

The very thought that people living in food poverty, and without cooking facilities, should be given three items of foods stuff to last a couple of days, and immediately think "Hey, I will combine my entire lot into one pot, add some hot water, and stir, then leave the rest in its pot for a few days, so I can snack on the lukewarm, and no longer safe to eat food every time I get hungry" - Thats just absurd.

What if they were not given the brown rice, tomato soup and kidney beans together? What then? What if they were given brown rice, biscuits and tinned fruit? Could that be combined to one meal, also?

Happy New Year.

MrsMcRuff · 06/01/2015 16:05

Just to say, although oatcakes have had a bad press on here, I really like them. Not because they're 'good for you', but because I like the taste Blush AIBU?

ChocLover2015 · 06/01/2015 16:07

OT but just been googling foodbanks. How on earth have we, an affluent western nation, got to the situation where nearly a million people a year use a foodbank. It is shocking! We should be rioting in the streets!

KristinaM · 06/01/2015 16:08

This thread is just TYPICAL Mumsnet

Nasty goady fucker comes along and mocks poor people. Mumsnetters totally turn it round and post lots of useful info and tips about how to help those who need it

Some share their personal experiences of having been there, and what helped .

Most of us get an insight into a life we are lucky to know little about.

Feel more grateful for what we have.

Are encouraged to add a few extra items to our weeks shopping to donate

Perhaps even decide to volunteer

I bloody LOVE Mumsnet, you bunch of vipers Flowers

AliceinWinterWonderland · 06/01/2015 16:08

Yes, please leave this up. It's a GOOD thread now. This thread... is clean.... Grin

Enormouse · 06/01/2015 16:08

MrsMcRuff I like them too. But generally with a fuckton of cheese, pate or smoked salmon.

Not as a receptacle for cold mashed kidney beans.
