chopping veg on a board used for raw chicken

I've just chopped up some chicken, thrown it in the pan, remembered the onion so went to use the same board and knife. DP practically squealed about cross contamination, and us all being ill, I put the raw onion straight into the pan with the raw chicken! He wanted me to get a clean board and knife to then put it with raw meat anyway making more washing up for me.

He's an idiot right?

If the onion is being cooked he is, indeed, being an idiot. The rule is surely about salad/veg to be eaten raw?

RayBloodyPurchase · 03/01/2015 18:24

Yup. He's an idiot ??

GraceFox · 03/01/2015 18:25

It's not cross contamination if it's all ending up being cooked together.

GilbertBlytheWouldGiftIt · 03/01/2015 18:25

This reminds me of the poster who was worried about potatoes being cooked in the same pan as raw chicken Grin

slightlyconfused85 · 03/01/2015 18:25

I think yabu I'm afraid. If you've chopped raw meat then you should use a different knife and board for non meat products. I doubt you will get ill but there is a reasonable risk.

Goldmandra · 03/01/2015 18:25

He's an idiot right?

Not sure about that but I am intrigued as to how he thinks the bacteria would survive on the onion once in the pan.

I also think someone who has so little understanding of the reasons behind good food hygiene practice could be quite dangerous in the kitchen.

PiperIsTerrysChoclateOrange · 03/01/2015 18:25

I do the same.

When doing a pot pot meal, then it's going to get contaminated once in the pan.

If I was doing a chicken salad for example then I would make sure I use my green board.

I do have 3 chopping boards 1 red 1 green and 1 purple. Red is for meat, green is for veg and purple for 1 pot meals.

HighwayDragon · 03/01/2015 18:25

Even though the veg is going directly into the pan with the raw meat?

I doubt you will get ill but there is a reasonable risk.

Please explain this risk to me Confused

Aeroflotgirl · 03/01/2015 18:27

No all fine, its all going in the same pan and cooked together.

CakeAndWineAreAFoodGroup · 03/01/2015 18:27

As it's being cooked together, you should be OK but it's not something that I would do as a matter of course.

It would matter more if the onion was to be eaten raw.

I have different coloured boards that I am pernickety about. Grin

TiggyD · 03/01/2015 18:28

If the veg is getting cooked as much as if it were as 'poisonous' as the chicken, it doesn't matter.

Letthemtalk · 03/01/2015 18:28

What risk? Onion picks up bugs from chopping board, goes in with chicken, picks up more bugs, they both get cooked, bugs die, no risk???

ClartyYakker · 03/01/2015 18:29

but the onion being chopped is going to 'touch' the raw meat in the pan anyway slightlyconfused85 so why does it matter?

This thread reminds me of being at university and banging my head against the wall repeatedly at similar things said to me by housemates who were technically supposed to be adults with enough intelligence to do university degrees.

PlumpingUpPartridge · 03/01/2015 18:31

There is no risk in the situation you describe, and I'm a microbiologist so must be right.

slightlyconfused85 · 03/01/2015 18:32

It doesn't matter in this case, as everything is going to be boiling at some point.
It's a very lazy bad habit which under different cooking circumstances could cause a problem. Her dh is not being an idiot by being careful.

ZingTheGreat · 03/01/2015 18:33

stuff his face with raw chicken

ZingTheGreat · 03/01/2015 18:34

oh i didn't realise chicken was poisonous

don't eat toxic chicken OP

MinceSpy · 03/01/2015 18:35

I have one chopping board that can go in the dishwasher for cutting raw meat. I never cut meat on my big thick veg chopping board but I would chop veg on the meat board for a one pot dish.

Cut veg on my bread board and feel my pointy knife!!!!!!!!!

MehsMum · 03/01/2015 18:36

very lazy bad habit
That's me smacked then: I do this all the time.
I just make sure I use a clean board if I'm making a salad or chopping fruit to be eaten raw.

CakeAndWineAreAFoodGroup · 03/01/2015 18:37

Just make sure you've got Wine as that's a good antidote. Wink

ItsAllKickingOffPru · 03/01/2015 18:38

He's an idiot. Perhaps he'd like to make dinner next time so it can be prepared to his exacting standards.

arethereanyleftatall · 03/01/2015 18:41

How does your dh imagine a stirfry or one pot meal is cooked if the raw veg and meat don't touch at the beginning in the pot or wok?

Mammanat222 · 03/01/2015 18:45

I am even lazier - I cut chicken breasts (and other meats) with scissors and it goes straight into the pan so meat in one hand and I cut with the other.... doesn't even touch a chopping board. I guess that eliminates 'cross contamination' though!
