Benefits: Too Fat To Work. Fucking really???

Mountainygirl · 03/01/2015 17:58

I just spotted this in the TV guide. Channel 5 have obviously hit on the perfect formula- bring everyone's two favourite folk devils ('fat people' and 'benefit scroungers') together, for a brand new series, which I am sure will be a balanced and fair portrayal of these people's lives....

TV seems over run with this shit atm. Everyone goes on about how sexist/racist telly was in the 70s, but honestly, in years to come, people will be totally gobsmacked about how in 2015, it was almost universally OK to rip the absolute shit out of poor people.

Still missing the point then.

No it isn't Pia. Nobody is trying to do that. It is unfortunate that you live in country without democracy etc. However, the way this country is going, certainly with regard to benefits, we will be without them soon, too. The fact is however, that whilst we still have them, it is not unreasonable to expect them to be of a standard whereby people can live without having to access foodbanks etc. The fact is that people on out of work benefits are being scapegoated by the government and the press. It's not paranoia when it's factual. It's not vile or an insult to those murdered under a regime that started in precisely this manner. Get your facts right and read your history.

FlouncyMcFlouncer · 04/01/2015 15:25

Plural 123 you misread my point. I did not compare living in Britain in 2015 to living in Nazi Germany. I pointed out that the techniques used to change societal viewpoint are the same ones used by the Nazi regime.

FlouncyMcFlouncer · 04/01/2015 15:26

Plarail123' not plural 123. Autocorrect.

Carrierpenguin · 04/01/2015 15:32

The comparison to nazi Germany is sick. Jews were identifiable by their race and religion, there was no escape for them. The poor are not idenifiable in the same way, I can see that benefits have been eroded gradually over the years and the safety net is going...plus job opportunities reducing with all the labour coming in from the EU.

I do think it's depressing, but sadly the wealthy politicians and companies are loving the fact that they have a steady stream of mostly young, footloose labour from abroad who they can employ for less than Brits and at the same time they cut benefits, claiming more jobs have been created...

Carrieroengiun it was not only Jews who were targeted, many other far less identifiable peoples were persecuted too. However, once again I reiterate I was not drawing a comparison in the way that you think. Please read my post above.

Plarail123 · 04/01/2015 15:37

Oh dear.

SisterMoonshine · 04/01/2015 15:45

yanbu
You could see from the obesity and DLA thread how many people think like this.

FlouncyMcFlouncer · 04/01/2015 15:47

Plarail123 are you actually interested in a discussion? Your replies are PA and fairly pointless.

Dawndonnaagain · 04/01/2015 15:55

The comparison to nazi Germany is sick. Jews were identifiable by their race and religion, there was no escape for them.
No it isn't. It is part of history and it is repeating itself. It was not just the jews that were targetted. Disabled people, gypsies, gay people.
Read, comprehend and then comment.

Pipbin · 04/01/2015 15:57

Jews were identifiable by their race and religion they also targeted gypsies and gays people, disabled people, transgender people, communists, Poles and others besides. They whipped the people up into a frenzy of hate for these groups. They made people think that they were stopping nice people having nice things and if we can just make them go away it will all be better.
Do you see the analogy here?

plus job opportunities reducing with all the labour coming in from the EU.

So it's all the fault of those nasty forins is it? Coming over here..............

Plarail123 · 04/01/2015 16:13

I don't want a discussion. I find any comparison between the UK in 2015 and Germany in the 1930's deeply offensive. It's ok though, I'll go off to the Gulag quietly now. P.S. Not too many obese people here. Just sayin'.

Cherriesandapples · 04/01/2015 16:15

I think people are wrong to say that people on benefits are worse off now than ever before. That is untrue. In the 80's I clearly remember working aged 15 to pay parents electricity. People now expect a higher standard of living. Some people expect the state to fund mobiles, TV's, etc whereas in the 70's and 80's benefit they didn't have these things. Before someone comes on to say "prove it" over the years I have worked with people who literally expect the state to fund their every need.

BIWI · 04/01/2015 16:17

It's a comparison of the techniques being used, not the countries/eras. Which has now been pointed out several times Hmm

Dawndonnaagain · 04/01/2015 16:18

Plarail Hmm

BIWI · 04/01/2015 16:18

What was your job, Cherries?

Dawndonnaagain · 04/01/2015 16:20

Cherries Mobiles are often the only form of communication a person has. Most people already own a television, as did many in the years you mentioned. The cost of living has changed since the 70s and 80s. People are worse off on benefits now as was proven in a fairly recent study by The University of East Anglia.

Pipbin - I didn't say it was the fAult of 'forrins' as you put it. I was trying to explain that immigration and free movement of people is great for rich capitalists who benefit from the ready supply of cheap labour, for poorer people it has no benefit other than increasing the competition for jobs.

Pipbin · 04/01/2015 16:34

But that is still 'people are coming over here taking our jobs' isn't it?

I do agree that there is little in it to benefit poorer people.

DH watched this over Christmas. Its on youtube. Filmed in 1978 it is set in 1977 against the backdrop of the Queens Silver Jubilee. I havent watched it yet but DH did. He found it harrowing and it made him angry. It still has much relevance today.

Flouncy you talk good sense.

Cherries why don't you come out and say what you actually mean - have the courage of your convictions. And what was your job that you cite as evidence for some of your claims about benefit claimants.
