YABU.

I thought you might be referring to the Ronnie Corbett one for microwave meals that are so simple "even a man" can do it.

Just wanted to add an update on this. Today in my paper there's a large half-page ad of the same thing (Cancer Research UK) showing a wide-angle view of the same laboratory. There are 6 scientists in it, 3 male and 3 female. And 6 members of the public, obviously fundraisers, including the mysterious woman in the pink apron and a little boy with her, a marathon runner, a musician, a knitter and so on. (4 men and 2 women) A mixture of ethnic origins and so on too. Totally equality-based and not sexist at all. They've obviously taken great pains to be PC, so YABU!!!

I hadn't seen either of these before - the OP's picture, or the Joey Essex (who he?) youtube ad. I think they're both sexist, taken together. In both of them, the central character on whom the ad is focused is a man. In both of them, the woman plays a secondary and subservient role. I thought the woman scientist in the Joey Essex ad was made to look stupid, and he was the one doing all the talking - so there's no way it can be said to redress the balance in the picture ad.

TBH, though, I find this whole 'stand up to cancer' thing a bit odd. It's as if cancer is a particularly nasty playground bully with human agency. Cancer isn't a person ffs. My mother died of lung cancer about 15 years ago. While she was ill I was sickened by all the talk of her 'fight with cancer' and then when she died she'd 'lost the battle'. Yes, by all means conduct scientific research into cancer treatment. But let's not pretend that by donating to Cancer Research we're giving the playground bully a punch on the nose. And certainly let's not promote it with sexist ads.

Why does the female scientist have to be wearing spectacles? That is a stereotype!

As for the first picture, I thought it was a cookery programme.

MiddleAgedandConfused · 05/01/2015 13:23

Old male scientist paired with young female cup cake baker? - makes me cringe a bit.

bigbluestars · 05/01/2015 14:01

Everyone in laboratories have to wear safety spectacles.

AnnieLobeseder · 05/01/2015 15:20

bigbluestars - you obviously don't work in a lab! Grin

bigbluestars · 05/01/2015 15:24

I have worked in laboratories for 18 years.

HappyAgainOneDay · 05/01/2015 19:29

Well, aren't the 'spectacles' worn in labs more like goggles or a shield?
