WWYD...man hitting dog.

New to this posting malarky, so be gentle. I was out walking my dog earlier & came across a male in his 20's with 3 small terrier dogs. He put two of the dogs on a lead when he saw me, so I did the same.

As I walked passed him, one of the dogs on the lead reacted aggressively to my dog, nothing major & my dog ignored it.

Despite it being no biggie, the man punched his dog, hard, several times.
I asked him not to hit his dog. His response was that he could do what he wanted. I pointed out to him that it was illegal, to which he seemed surprised & told me to shove it up my arse. I then walked off.

In hindsight, it was probably a bit stupid to challenge him. I was on my own on a track & noone else around. But he was being a dick.

I would of done the same as you, asked him to not hit his dog.

Well done. If you know where he lives you could try the RSPCA.
What a bastard. Good for him to know this is unacceptable.

I would have done the same as you. In fact I have done before, to a man laying into (hitting and kicking) a rotty for no apparent reason. There were loads of other people about just staring, but not doing anything. Said man also asked why it was my business and then called me a "stupid cow". I laughed that this was the best insult he could come up with. However, I still wonder if I'd made things worse for the dog when they got home!

I got abused by a man for NOT hitting my (on-lead) dog when it tried to have a go at his. When I asked him what good it would do, exactly, he turned really nasty.

Gotta feel sorry for their dogs.

You were brave to take him on but probably not wise in a secluded place, but it's easy to act first and think later. Good for you.

Unfortunately (or fortunately) I had never seen him before, so no idea who he was. I hope he trod in dog shit on his way home.

He punched him? I'd report it just in case he's well known. If you can next time snap a picture or put your phone video on to get a picture for the RSPCA. Good to challenge him but I'd have been a bit wary given his aggression, he could easily have turned on you. You see now why his dog is aggressive.

I would do the same as you...every single time. Nothing incenses me more than folk being cruel to animals. Makes me rage!

My DH was out walking our dogs a few years ago and came across a guy with a west highland terrier. The little dog came running over to say hello and the guy lifted it off it's feet by the collar and punched it in the ribs. Put it this way, the guy found out what it was like to be punched in the ribs numerous times the dog now loves living with my sister. The sad thing was the SSPCA didn't have enough evidence to prosecute. Oddly enough, the guy said he didn't want the dog back when asked by my DH. I hate animal cruelty. There's no need to lift a hand to a dog at all. He's lucky he didn't have the lead wrapped round his neck! Bastard!

Male in his 20s with three small terriers? Probably a poacher. They're not well known for their empathetic approach towards their animals.

I would have told him to hand the dogs over to me if he wasn't going to treat them correctly. what a disgraceful human being!!

Those types of people don't even have kindness in their radar. Their animals are just commodities to be used and abused. They breed them so there's a plentiful supply and use pet cats to toughen the dogs up.

There used to be loads where we lived. Scumbags.

Without video evidence it would be tricky to get prosecution but if you know where he lives then report to RSPCA. Sometimes being questioned about animal cruelty can scare people into rethinking their behaviour towards animals. If dog was injured then they can take to vet and that would be evidence

I think you did the right thing. At least it might send him the message that he was wrong.
I'd like to think I'd do the same in that situation.

I'd have pulled my mobile out and looked like I was going to film him. That would probably shit him up more than anything...
