AIBU to want to try washable pads?

I'm still not 100% sure I want to go for it, but I am interested in trying washable pads instead of disposable ones for periods. Same principle as washable nappies - leave to soak then wash them through.

But my OH thinks its way too gross and doesn't want to have to see them lying around etc.

I don't think it's that different to disposable ones going in the bathroom bin - occasionally a bit messy if the wrapper comes off, and potentially smelly if you leave them too long. At least with washable I would pop them into a sealed tub to soak - he wouldn't need to see anything!

What do you think? How do I persuade him?

Ooh, Ella's House are still going.

These have changed design since I bought them but they still have cotton outer and hemp inner.

Don't ask your DP, it's your choice. I'm interested too. My DP would be squeamish but he's a bit scared of periods which is his problem not mine! Funnily enough he's not squeamish about his own farts or skids Hmm
Any recommendations for post childbirth pads?
I hate disposable pads-they smell awful and cause beaver sweat! Are reusables better in that respect (yes I do washGrin)

I love mine. I do use a moon up too but have a v heavy flow so I often need backup.

If staining is an issue, a soak in cold salted water will remove.

I love Made By Amber pads, especially for night time. The wool backed ones are lovely and don't make me feel like my muff is cooking.

LOL at beaver sweat!

We don't have a tumbledrier so would take a bit longer to wash and dry.

I've gone for it though and ordered a few!

My OH isn't squeamish about periods at all so it's weird that he's a bit freaked by the idea of cloth pads. But hey like others have said he's not the one that has to use them :)

Woohoo glad to hear you've gone for it :) your thread reminded me I want to buy a menstrual cap so have just been looking up some. Showed DP the pads and he looked disgusted and said no way. Tbf id rather a cup but it isn't my DP's choice and it's not your DP's choice either :)

hooray for team ecofemme! . I use them with my meluna on first 1-2 days, so a pack of 3 was plenty. Don't know how many you'd need, depends on your own personal AF I suppose. Think you can buy kits from some online retailers, maybe that would be worth looking into?

I love mine. Like a pp, I bought mine from Honour Your Flow. I bought three initially to give a mini trial then bought more.

I give the used pad a blast under cold water then bung in with the next wash (which DH does the majority of). I found soaking them overnight led to smelling.

I use a menstrual cup and washable pads, they are much more comfortable than 'disposable' ones (that end up in landfill).

Also they don't smell like disposables as they don't have the chemicals that react with blood. I just put mine in with the rest of the washing, there are various soak/no soak methods that users employ.

The website linked to above (Luxury Moon) has a lot of information and choice and the owner is very helpful if you have any queries like what kind would suit you best or how many you need to buy.

There are also several Youtube videos about them too, one of them is:

www.youtube.com/user/preciousstarspads

Which is run by a teenager, (I think she is 17/18?) and has a lot of information that would be helpful for young girls considering using them (although the info applies equally to older women too!). She also sells pads as well.
