To put my hand down on the ceramic hob to test if it was hot?

It was.
My "piss off finger" has 3rd degree burns.

I now have 1, 2 and 3rd degree burns, on my middle 3 fingers.

How stupid could I be???

I'm always burning myself. I bought some rubber ends to stick on the racks inside the oven which help, but I have scars everywhere. I picked up a baking tray last week... three seconds after I'd removed it from the hot oven with an oven glove. I've no idea what I was thinking (I clearly wasn't thinking).

Ds burnt his hand on a faulty storage heater when he was small. He stayed with his granny for a day and came back sans bandage and sans skin because "he'd picked it off himself". I never did trust her after this.

Confused Sorry! I've no idea what happened there.

ZingTheGreat · 31/12/2014 01:49

LadySybil I get the feeling you are trying to say something...tell me, do you often burn yourself?

LadySybilLikesSloeGin · 31/12/2014 01:55

Grin The laptop froze, very odd.

CatWreathkeith · 31/12/2014 09:12

I once watched a chef carefully remove a breaded king prawn from a deep fat fryer with tongs.

Unfortunately the tongs slid out of his hand so he plunged his hand into the very hot fat after it.

Ouch!

I did the exact same thing 5 days before my wedding day. I had my hand bandages up at the hospital and envisaged having to hide my hand behind a massive bouquet, however it healed enough to be bandage free on my wedding day!

The Laptop froze with LadySybils burn.

I've done it too. Went to the doctor who gave me this face Hmm and promptly asked me how my relationship with DH was!

I'm also the person who takes a casserole dish out of the oven, removes the oven gloves and grasps the roasting hot handle to hold it whilst stirring.

I've also leant my hand against the sizzling hot iron fire surround to steady myself whilst poking the fire.

I'm a bit stupid.

I burnt my finger prints off at Glastonbury some years ago... I may not have been entirely free of all substances. I went to pick up what I thought was a battery operated lamp by it's metal top. It was a Tilley lamp with flame inside! I was so stoned I didn't react quickly enough...

Fingerprints were black burnt and had no discernible pattern for weeks and weeks.

hackmum · 31/12/2014 17:31

That's horrible, OP.

Older electric hobs always used to go red when they were hot - it's puzzling that modern hobs don't do that. It seems like such an obvious safety failing.

I dropped a cup of tea on myself on a Euro star train and ended up with huge 3rd degree burns on my stomach and lap. Unfortunately we had just left France and it was 1.5 hours until we got back to London. They had to put an announcement out for a doctor and I had to sit in the tiny toilet in my knickers while they poured 5 litre bottles of water over me. When they ran out I had to hold coke cans against the burns as there was no running water. A lovely French nurse then bandaged me up and I left the train by wheelchair and was rushed to hospital. Thankfully all the scars are beginning to fade now 3 years on but it was a memorable 30th birthday!

A few years ago when it was very snowy and cold I went out to play in the park with the kids. My feet got very wet and cold so I thought the obvious thing to do to warm them up and dry then off, was to put them flat on the front of the wood burning stove Hmm God it was painful to walk for days afterwardsAngry

I was wearing those fluffy socks that are made from acrylic or something - think I was lucky not to have them meet and weld my feet to the stove Grin

LynetteScavo · 31/12/2014 17:40

I used to do things like this when I was young...you live an learn. Grin

CatsClaus · 31/12/2014 17:44

i dabbed my fingers onto the hobring element, but i was only about 7 ....I think I had decided to help by making porridge while my ma was somewhere else in the house

Am also very careless with hot pan handles/dishes like ladyflumpalot ...doesn't help that we have a range, so lots of cooking inside the oven means very hot pans

I also have asbestos fingers....so don't react fast enough when something actually IS lava hot and I have misjudged

Royalsighness · 31/12/2014 17:56

I hope your hand gets better soon!

If it makes you feel better I had a bent prong on my dolls house (yes I'm lame) electricity cable thing and I put it in my mouth to bend it back with my teeth (whilst plugged in) and nearly died. These sort of things happen to me regularly!

AuditAngel · 31/12/2014 18:11

Two weeks ago, in the dark in my bedroom, I noticed that the plug in insect killer was on (it has a little red light up switch on the top). I put my finger down to switch it off, not knowing that something had broken it and there were exposed wires.

I found them with my finger.

A mains shock really hurts. I have 2 melted patches on my finger.

I rang DH from work and asked him to turn off the ring main and remove it and throw it away. He thought I was making a fuss, until he saw my finger.

maddening · 31/12/2014 18:13

Just drop water on the hob - if it sizzles it is hot.

singaporefling · 31/12/2014 18:23

Hmmmm sounds AWFUL... However, despite knowing better/warning DC's for YEARS, I stuck a knife into the toaster recently to dislodge some bread - the resulting shock flung me across the kitchen and the 'inside' of my arm was sore/felt burnt for days.... Stupid caaaah Blush
