to think that Boden clothes look lovely but are very poor quality?

Is it just me? I love the look of Boden clothes, they are very much my style. However, I find that after just a couple of washes, they look tatty.

For instance, I bought a couple of skirts and a dress a few weeks ago. Both the hems of the skirts came down after about a week. As for the dress, it has a kind of ruffle at the front which was the same colour navy as the rest of the dress. I have only washed it twice and the ruffle is a very different shade of blue. It looks terrible. I felt great in it the first time I wore it, now I don't think I'll wear it again. Such a waste of money.

AIBU and unreasonably harsh, or are Boden clothes actually really shit?

The kids coats are great. I only buy in the sale but they last the year or more in terms of size and are still really nice to pass on to other people. I don't buy anything else from them.

Wotsitsareafterme · 30/12/2014 21:42

Yabu. Complain!
On the whole we have had great experiences with boden clothes but some stuff is better than others. Dd1 gets hand me downs of boden gear and most of it is still pristine. Their jersey is amazing compared to high street and is thick and lovely. We had knit dresses this year that shrank a bit but it was exh who washed them grrrr.
The dd's had the purple rainbow hoodies in the summer and we get compliments constantly about them. From the winter range we have cords and Jersey jeans which both look fab after a dozen washes.
I remain loyal to boden because the girls clothes on the high street seem to be basing their look on wannabe wag/baby prostitute. Boden not to everyone's taste but their kids clothes are never age inappropriate or tacky Grin and they are logo free!!!

Wotsitsareafterme · 30/12/2014 21:46

I forgot coats. Dds get two years out of boden coats and outs still look amazing Grin

Dowser · 30/12/2014 23:09

I got a Biden dress off eBay. I thought the quality was so poor, I'd never buy another.

My favourite children's clothes manufacturer is frugi.

The quality is second to none and if you buy in the sale they are practically half price.

My daughter had lots of unisex stuff that passed from her boys to her daughter....although she did get lots of stuff in her own right.

I love their coats with that soft curly, wolly type lining. Looks so cosy.

MuddhaOfSuburbia · 30/12/2014 23:13

I actually like Boden

My favourite best ever coat came from there

Joules, however, is shit

MarjorieMelon · 30/12/2014 23:16

I used to get stuff from Boden in the sale but I don't bother anymore as they are far too expensive.

The children's stuff is good quality but the adults stuff is rubbish, looks terrible after a couple of washes and doesn't suit me at all, makes me look scruffy and frumpy.

littlepeas · 30/12/2014 23:20

I have found it mostly very good and many items have been worn by at least 2 of my children. Their customer service is excellent, so I would give them a call if you are unhappy.

DramaAlpaca · 30/12/2014 23:22

I've never had a problem with the quality of Boden stuff & I buy quite a lot, but only in the sale or with a discount code as it is too expensive otherwise.

WanderingTrolley1 · 30/12/2014 23:29

Quality not what it was 6/7 years ago, sadly.

Joules is the biggest bag of shite there is.

momb · 30/12/2014 23:36

Just return it. Their customer service is generally good. I have had occasional issues in the past which have been resolved swiftly.
In answer to your question though, no, the quality isn't as good as it used to be, but the price differential between Boden and the high Street isn't as great as it used to be either. I think they are on a par with Next (or similar) now: cut a bit funny. Some people it suits, some people it doesn't, and the sale stuff is all a bit poor.

IamMummyhearmeROAR · 30/12/2014 23:43

I used to buy a few bits each season at a friend's party with a 20% discount but the last time I bought I wasn't impressed with the fit or quality and I haven't bought again (but to be fair I've stopped buying clothes in general in an attempt to save money). I have found Mini Boden to be great for my girls though though Lands End now offer similar and cheaper styles.

ZenNudist · 30/12/2014 23:46

I want to like boden but always think its terrible quality fabrics for the price. Plus a mush mash of fabric designs, you'd end up buying lots to try and co ordinate with.

Ditto banana republic where I like some of the styling but the quality is awful.

I really despair of finding quality clothes nowadays. So much shitty polyester / artificial fabrics , badly made, don't last. Boden too expensive for bad quality.

clary · 30/12/2014 23:55

If you have issues like that you should contact them and they will refund/replace.

I had a problem with one of DS2's T-shirts once (the picture faded off) and they gave me a credit for what it cost as the shirt itself was no longer available (ie we had bought it months before).

Personally I find them fine, apart from that T shirt I cannot think of anything we have had an issue with. Have had a lot of Boden over the years. In fact I have always found eg the T-shirt and jeans seams don't drift unlike some cheaper brands. DS2 likes the jeans as they are cut to fit him (skinny).

McSqueezy · 31/12/2014 00:00

Boden - extremely overhyped. People discuss it on MN, like they wearing some sort of badge of honour having shopped there. It's sad.

MalibuStacy · 31/12/2014 03:11

Yeah, funnily enough most of the kids clothes I have bought have been fine. It just seems to be the womenswear. Maybe they use different designers/workshops?

Is it just me that thinks boden and jules are the ugliest, most unfashionable clothes out?

5EllipticGoldRings · 31/12/2014 09:11

I've bought my DH quite a few basic tshirts over the years, some of the early ones are still going whereas the newer, poorer quality IMO, have gone thin and shapeless.

MrsTawdry · 31/12/2014 09:20

YANBU and as for Cath Kidston! Her stuff is pretty (for kids) but so thin! £35 for a toddler's dress you'd expect lining...but what you get is the thinnest, cheapest cotton with no substance to it.

happystory · 31/12/2014 09:25

I think it must vary depending on their suppliers. And agree quality used to be overall better. I have summer dresses and boots still going strong after years but some t shirts and tops barely lasted a season.
