Ever since we moved in here last Easter, the bath hasn't drained well. DH adjusted it...so that it was set at a correct angle but it only improved slightly. I bought some commercial drain unblocker which made NO difference.

The last owner had a lot of hair apparently Hmm so I can't help but boak slightly when I see my bath water sitting there....held in by potential masses of her hair down the pipe.

Is there some viciously good chemical I need?

Bicarbonate of soda down the plughole, then add vinegar, leave as long as possible, then rinse down with hot or boiling water

bikket that sounds good! I am trying it! I can't get out today so that will do for now! I will report back.

Thanks to our plumber for doing himself out of future business! Grin

MrsTawdry · 30/12/2014 16:07

Well I tried the curtain wire and came up with a big fat nothing! I ran the tap to see if I'd maybe shifted a blockage but nope. It's still pooling almost immediately!

I am going asap and buying something extremely caustic AND some Nair. I will do the caustic solution and a day later the Nair if the first doesn't work!

Caustic soda is like a miracle at unblocking drains. I used it when our bath blocked leaving about 4inches of water. Its fine on plastic.

Mixed some with cold water in a bucket - don't get it on your skin and leave it outside while it 'steams' Then just pour into the bath. I was amazed, the whole lot of stuck water just whose down the plughole!

You need a plumber snake

Moresproutsplease · 30/12/2014 18:59

The problem may not be with your bath pipe, our bath doesn't empty when the drain outside is blocked.

Luckily the drain is shared so our water company clear it for free (about three times a year!)

MrsTawdry · 30/12/2014 20:03

Ah....Sprouts I wonder.....I must look into that!

But..this is a flat...wouldn't the other residents also have this issue? The girl on my floor has no such problem.

Veet in a tube works well here (I have long hair) - just squirt the tube down the plughole and leave it to work away.

catsofa · 30/12/2014 21:21

Please please also get a plughole strainer, all these caustic chemicals go out to sea after you flush them down!

lacksdirection · 30/12/2014 21:28

I have a plug hole strainer and my plughole blocks every time I wash my hair, but I clean the plughole strainer every time I wash my hair and have never had a problem with slow draining plugholes.

The thought of my plughole being clogged with hair makes me feel sick. It just looks awful as well as creating problems with drainage.

I don't want to spend a huge amount of money on chemicals to pour down the drain, nor wait half a day to use the bath or shower.

So when you do clear it OP, a plughole strainer will prevent the problem arising again if it is hair.

RainbowRabbit33 · 30/12/2014 21:28

One shot. It's wonderful, evil stuff. Worked so well in the bathroom, DH decided to have a go in the kitchen with it. One new stainless steel sink later, we were just about talking again, and he has learned that it is a good idea to read labels before proceeding to use strong chemicals...!

NoArmaniNoPunani · 30/12/2014 21:31

The men's hair removing cream works best for me - either nair or veet.

TheIronGnome · 30/12/2014 21:40

The Mr muscle orange bottle works well for me, always leave it overnight before flushing through with hot water though. It dissolves hair!
